  • Its always been a mystery to me where the opening scene was shot. Silver Link was named in 1935 so this is some two years later. I have never found out where the scene was.

  • Im 20 and i find british films from 30s more respectful

  • Crackin funny film this im 23 an I think this is great

  • LNER A4!!!

  • Ah, I love british locomotives so fucking much, its like beauty over again

  • OH MR PORTER 4 LIFE DUMB MOTHERFUCKAS

  • ROFL

  • Yes the ghost train by Arnold Riley of dads army fame. What a life he had

    ;~)

  • i love will hay films so funny

  • "The Ghost Train" looks very promising, too. It's another Gainsborough Picture, and it also deals with trains and comedy.

    Doesn't feature Will Hay, though.

  • @GenghisKhan44 there is a full version of the Ghost Train here on you tube..well worth watching !

  • Classic old film - Will Hay is brilliant!!

  • wahahahaha LOL

  • wats this lady said on 01:19 - 01:22?

  • "If I tap the wheel with this hammer and the wheel goes clang, than I know the wheel's there." "And suppose the wheel doesn't go clang?" "Well then I know the train's gone!" Now that's funny!

  • "Comedy and railways.. what more could you want in a film!!"

    couldnt agree more

  • unfortunately that is what British Railways are atm.

  • British Railways?? That ended in 1994. This is the mess they left us with now by the way. Thank you Tory's.

  • The second tunnel exit is Southampton Central (or Southampton West in those days according to Wikipedia). Where the sidings are there is a large office block (housing the local South West Trains HQ) and the power station on the left is now Toys 'R' Us. How things change.

  • I wonder if they had stuntmen in those days...the way that lady mayoress falls of that podium!

  • uarsman, know wot you mean about stuntmen; check out the man falling off a pier extension in 'windbag the sailor', looks rather dodgy to me ?!

  • I think it was a nasty accident well there weren't the same health and safety in those days

  • Yes, the two actors in this scene were quite seriously injured when the water washed them onto the tracks.

Will Hay was injured making this film, as was Graham Moffatt (who was actually strapped to the roof of the carriage at times).

  • @BEEFYBAYONET yes you can see them being washed off the edge of the paltform on to the tracks..nasty...

  • fantastic film. i have all will hays films, perhaps i should do a will hay channel.

  • This opening film shot of the Train running on the tracks is being filmed running backwards as all british trains run on the left (Up) & on the right (Down) This can be seen when the train come out of the tunnel into the station as the signal post is on the other side of the track. Now some times trains do use the other side of the track but only for shunting between lines.

  • No, all British trains usually run on the left if you are facing the direction of travel. If they ran on left for up and right for down then they would be running on the same line.

  • This is the best will hay film, love the opening music

  • great film

  • I can't quite get my head around what is supposedly wrong with the way the train is travelling! It looks fine to me!

oh, and is there anywhere I can find the full version?

  • trains 'drive' on the left, this is on the right hand side track hence the track to the left, tis like filming from the back of your car and then playing it in reverse ;)

  • @01276 Not always. GNER quite often change from left to right and vise versa.

  • @01276 you are correct, this was shot from the back of a train and then run in reverse for the start of the film.

  • @umaisthebest could be cos you're American.

  • @umaisthebest think of it as a road you wouldent drive on the wrong side

well its the same with trains

  • What I want to know is why is the train we are travelling on going facing road?

  • This is explained in the video description? "The opening was filmed from the back of a coach then played in reverse to look like the camera is on the fron of the train.. "

  • exactly.. no one ever reads the discriptions on here *rolls eyes*

  • @01276 not only that differant companies of the day used differant sides to drive like the GWR used to drive there engines on the right hand side

  • Thats the early silver link with the recessed front coupling before the poor shunter got crushed..later they made it come out further....am i a sad tragic fact storing train buff or what!!!

  • theres an old peter sellers movie UP THE CREEK...its a direct rip off but still good fun!!

  • "Next train's gone!" My uncle used to drink at Graham Moffat's pub, local to us - he was famous for short changing customers! Probably needed the money as Will Hay kept most of what they earned!

  • Its the line of the century!! "Next train's gone!!" followed closely by "Where's ya clock" and "He's playing with the faeries!"

  • Its the old guy - Moore Marriott - for me, sometimes remind myself of his character to joly myself up.

  • " Yeh wasting your time, you wont be here when they come up!"

    British comedy at its best!!!!

  • genius.i could watch will hay all day.a master of the delayed reaction.

  • "You're wasting your time". Watching Will Hay is a marvellous way to waste your time.
