  • I love Mercury's transformers. Can't wait 'till I have the money to get an O50JM for my Marshall MA50H

  • @Glockenator No doubt Glockenator. Well worth the investment!

  • Yeah, It does kill with Gibsons. It loves humbuckers.

  • got this same amp & am about to do tubes & maybe the MM-OT (which i hear you can do yourself) sounds great, just cut back the treble & presence when you turn it up (i play settings @2 ) its very trebly amp with single coils... but kills with a gibson . my cab still got the G-75 celestions .....

  • the MM's work real good with greenbacks.OTOH,heyboers seem to take to the vintage 30's.

it's all about finding the right balance for your taste.

  • Pacific transformers spank MM...the difference is like removing a blanket over the speakers once you drop a pacific transformer in and it reacts a lot better. feels like it sucks the notes right off your fingers

  • Mercury rocks!

  • @Soldano88 No doubt!

  • Have you noticed a significant difference after installing the new MM OT and choke? Sounds great. Just wondering how big of a difference from before.

  • @crazyfreak1919 Thanks. Yeah, I noticed the difference as soon as I first fired it up. It's even better if you set the bias a little hot. It's a great amp stock but I like it much more now...

  • Hi! I have a question about the DSL50: How loud does it have to be before it starts sounding good? Is it possible to get a nice tone out of it in a small living room area?

  • @FreddySeeFreddyDo . It sounds great at low volumes. The master volume on this clip was barely at (1). You can dial in your desired sound (on each channel) with the GAIN knob and then set it at your required loudness level with the VOLUME knob.

  • i have a DSL 50 as well and i would like to do the same upgrade that you did. My question is, how hard was the install, and did you have a link or steps that show you how to do the OT and choke install?

Amp sounds great definitely much better then my stock DSL.

  • @VelezBiH - I had an amp techinician do the installation for me. I'm not good with electronics and there's a lot of deadly voltage in that circuit. You can probably email the team at MM and they will send you the schematic but I can't comment on how easy it would be to replace the OT since I paid a tech to do it for me. I can say you will dig the sound after it's installed...

  • the mercury magnetics upgrades make it sound better?

  • It's a much higher quality transformer (similar to the Drake & Partridge Transformers from years ago). Tone is subjective but IMO the amp sounds more dynamic -especially at high volumes. I've had this amp for about 11 years now.

  • CAn i get an good ACDC Tone with this amp?

  • Yes! Even on the clean channel with the gain semi cranked this head can nail an awesome AC/DC tone...

  • ROCK BOTTOM!!! Love when people play that riff what kinda eq settings do u rougly have for that riff. I know i wont get exactly the same tone cuz my dsl isnt modded

  • the cab is marshall 1960a?

  • Cab is a 1960BV with Vintage 30's...

  • Your sound is nice but I think that better speakers than those Marshall-Celestion, can get better your sound.

  • dude those arent Marshall-Celestion speakers. Those are V30s. arguably the best speakers out there. I like em with lead 80's but all v30's sounds good 2

  • hello sr. Very nice tone. I hace a tsl 100 and i was wondering wich trasnformer shoul i use. i mean, In the mercury magnetics main page there are a several options for output and power subtitutions. Which one is to choose?! How does it work?! thank you

  • Is that Rush I hear?

  • It is... It's the riff in "Bastille Day" off of Caress of Steel - right before rhythm section starts chugging...

  • Do you have a clip from pre modding for an A/B before after?

My tech put in vintage mustard caps for my DSL100, now the channels don't sound like 2 completely different amps.

I want do do the trannies too but I'm not sure if it will make a difference.

    I post a video response.

  • I don't have a clip of the head prior to the mod (wish I had one...). The MM Output Tranny and Choke will make the most prominent improvement over the stock tone. The preamp and output tubes/bias will also make a differerence. Regards,

  • I just modded my dsl50 with a mm choke and replaced c17 and it sounds like a new amp. These mods really work.

  • I own a tsl60 and it has the same tone as your dsl, is the main difference that the tsl has one more channel and the dsl not?

  • That is correct. The TSL was based closely on the same circuit that is in the DSL 50 & 100 but it does have an extra channel that is footswitchable...

  • The DSL has a better tone than the TSL, as imo the TSL is muddy and lacks some of the definition the DSL has. So basically you traded some tone for a little more versatality. If youown the TSL combo I beleive the power rubes are EL-84's instead of the heads EL-34's...

  • your a moron there the same amp the tsl just has an extra channel and options, go die plz

  • Im the moron?!?! Look at the circuit you retard, have you ever A/B both amps at the same time??? Theres a noticeable difference between the two. I also stated It was my opinion to which one was better. Get your facts straight before spewing FAIL, moron...

  • I have seen both circits , they have the same fucking main circit i know i fucking modd amps and i have a tsl and have played dsls there is no major difference that would change the sound to any major extent.

  • Man I almost feel sorry for you. Both amps have a different feel to them. I could tell you were a Tsl owner from the beginning. I'm betting you are a sevierly retarded 13 year old that has no idea what he's talking about. You never have seen the "circit" and you definitley dont "modd" amps. GO DIE N00B

  • your a moron there is no major differance exept for features, you can pretty much achieve the same tones on both.

  • If that was the case than we would all have Tsl's wouldn't we?

  • the difference is a few part values nothing big, and the tsl has seperate eq controls for the differnt channels. the circirt board is basicly the same expect the tsls is bigger for the other channels. my tsl came stock with the same values as the dsl, which most likly was a factory screw up. there is no difference that would give that much of a sound difference. some values are differnt but the designs the same.

  • Dude can you not get it through your head? They're different amps and are not the same. You have obviously not played them both.

  • they are different but based on the same circit

much like the difference from the peavey 6505 and 6505+ or the 5150 and 515011

there different but based on the same thing.

  • The 6505 and the 5150 are the exact same amps. The difference in the 6505+ and 5150 2 is another pre-amp tube and its voiced some what different. The comparison between the 6505 and 6505+ is the exact same thing as the Tsl and Dsl. They're voiced different and in my opinion the Dsl is better amp between the 2. You're digging your own grave here...

  • maybe they do sound a little different, ive played both and own one. Its fine if you like the dsl more, but saying the tsl sucks is totally retarded. there is very little difference in sound.

  • Now we're back to square one... The Dsl is the superior amp and is regarded as the best amp of the jcm 2000 series. So dude just drop it we've already spammed this guys comment section....

  • 50W 2 channel amps are the way to go...

saying that because something is based off of the same circuit makes them sound exactly the same is ludicris! i play a single rectifier without reverb, and it sounds nothing like a dual or triple rectifier. a 2 channel circuit is much simpler in design, and creates less resistance between your guitar and your physical sound. 2 channel amps are much more dynamic and punchier.

  • Both amps do have a different feel to them but they are not so different that one sounds heaps better than the other. I should know cause I own both!. Both are upgraded & both kick ass once you have the volume up a bit!

  • any info on the mod ? seems this improves A LOT the overal tone , can you tell me more ?

  • cool, nice video! feel free to video response it in one of rob's DSL100 videos.

  • thanks. I appreciate it...

  • DUDE!!! BRIGHT!!!! AHHH

  • Nice. Reminds me of a JCM 800. ROCK ON!

  • hey...thanks for posting this demo, after seeing this 2 wks ago i ordered the same up-grades, boy am i glad i did...i stumbled across some guy via a search on a marshall forum thats listed pic's and all the info needed to perform the mods yourself.. 'n' if i can do it, any one can (believe me!!)with shipping to the UK, it aint cheap but well worth it..it reminds me of the 70's 2203's, 800's etc etc very REAL sounding...

    thanks again all....

  • Very Cool coming from the Land of Marshall. Nice job on the "self installation" also.

  • Even my Tele deluxe sounds great through it. I don't engage the "deep" switch either. It's even darker when you use the "deep" switch.

  • I'm a metal guy and I'll admit, even though the deep switch can be fun, it's not really useable. It can really muddy up the signal since there's so much sound swimming in too much bass.

  • I agree totally. I really never use the deep switch or mid shift button. I mainly think of this as a JCM800 with (4) more knobs on it.

  • Stock it sound brighter and thinner than a jcm800, the mod made it sound like a jcm800? I heard the notes would become much thicker after modding and the sound becomes more vintage/open? Is it better for a metal sound now? Not nu metal or something, so a nice open sound. And how do you like the v30 speakers? At the moment i have got g12-75t speakers in a 1960a cab, and those speakers havent got mids only bas and treble, i dont like them. I am planning to buy a bogner oversized copy with v30s.

  • I can get just about any tone I need now between the (2) channels from early plexi, JCM800, Jubilee, JMP, JCM900 etc. I only use v30's and greenbacks with this head. v30's have the pronounced mids you're looking for so the Bogner w. v30's is a good choice. This setup gets an awesome metal sound and a great clean sound so it's very versatile. If I back off the gain I get into JCM800 territory but this head has a lot more gain on tap once you crank up the master. Regards, Rob

  • cool. I was thinking of having this done to my DSL 100. It seems to get rid of extreme fizzy highs. Seem like it darken the amp up. (in a good way)

  • The amp became more touch sensitive after the MM mod. It also responds better to volume knob changes over stock. Pinch harmonics became effortless also...

  • thanks for posting that!

did you notice any difference in feel after modding the amp?

  • hey dude nice tones ,what are the parts that u baught from mm thanks,

  • Thx. I installed the MAR50-O (Axiom) Output Transformer and the MC10H (Tone Clone) Choke. I haven't done the Power Transformer yet but I would like to eventually...

  • how much did the whole set cost? i really want to move up from my lil 15 watt

  • The MM upgrade (both parts)run about $180. You can find used DSL 50's for around $600-$850. Make sure you pair it with a good cabinet...

  • Was the transformer easy to put in? Can someone with little electronics experience do it? Your vid shows how a quality transformer can boost tone. Thansk for posting.

  • i love how clean channel makes the strings sound full and 'sticky' if you catch my drift

  • yep. i'm not really into the Roland JC120 clean tone. this setup allows sufficient grit, like a train at the top of a mountain right before it falls off the edge. Clean tone on this is even better with single coils.

  • ooooh yeah, like that really sticky clingy sound, were you can really hear the strings and the pick

  • Sounds great, too bad you couldnt give a BEFORE/AFTER comparison!!

  • Thanks alot. I should have done a before/after for sure.

  • Can I bother you for some tips on installing the choke? A quickly sketched diagram or decent website link would be infinitely appreciated.

  • Hello!

Which Choke is it? Mercury MC10H?

  • Yes, It's the MC10H Choke.

  • I NEED ADVICE PLEASE! i wanted to get the 100 watt version because the clean tone is so BIG and CLEAR but it is so loud. Will a dsl-50 watt sound as good? I play live shows in a band and we are loud. thanks for your help

  • The difference (volume wise) between the 50 & 100 watt DSL is not that much actually. You will have more clean headroom with the 100 but in regards to tone I've always liked 50 watt marshalls over the 100. I used to gig all over Atlanta with the 50 watt DSL and I never turned the master up over 4 over 5. Clean channel master was up around 6.

  • thank you

  • yo what are your settings for the dirty channel? They sound great. I have a dsl50 too but no upgrades.

  • Thanks. I keep the settings the same on both channels. Presence(7) Treble(8) Mid(6) Bass(7) Reverb(0) Volume(1) Gain(6) Deep & Mid shift buttons(off) in Lead 2 mode.

  • ah thanks! :)
