I had just gotten off of the Ol' Miss (HOTB) in the beginning of 94. I was actually on med hold when this happened and probably reassigned to shore duty awaiting discharge. That would have been a neat thing to see. Not so neat for the guy with the emergency. Awesome dedication for the guys that got him off though!! I need to get some of my videos off of VHS so I can upload them.
Thanks for the video, I served on the Mighty Miss from 79-82 saw some awsome cruises, sorry to see her go. Just weird to see so much drama to get a man off, there used to be a flight deck with a helicopter hanger where the box launchers are, we even carried a helicopter and flight crew for awhile.
Thanks for the feedback. We (the helo crew) never heard anything about the guy we airlifted after we got him to Gitmo and he went into surgery. Hopefully it all turned out good for him.
Thanks for posting this video. I remember this day always. I was the LSO on the flight deck that day. The flight deck crew were very courageous. It was the most dangerous thing we've ever done but we needed to get our shipmate to the hospital. It was life or death. The winch didn't work so the flight deck crew didn't have to be told what to do. I believe the name of flight deck sailor who used his back as a ramp to get the stretcher up into the helicopter was Lopez. Rating unknown.
This is a short clip of a hover-transfer from the USS Mississippi off the south coast of Haiti during Operation Support Democracy 7-26-1994. If you happen to know the name of the second crewman on this flight please leave a comment stating who it is so I can update the record.

I was on deck that day. I can't believe I stumbled across this video. Awesome memory. I served aboard the Mississippi for 2 years until May 1995.
