I actually enjoy Labyrinth. I've kinda mastered it, to the point that I've beaten the boss without touching the water. *brags more* Anyways, great review.
I loved Labyrinth Zone :S The only zone I didn't like Marble Zone myself, music was irritating and it was a total bore, loved every other zone though.
I hate console fan boys, I don't have a 360 nor a PS3, but I'm planning to get an 360 for Christmas or afterwards. Any who, I have only 1 new gen console and that's the Wii, you won't believe all the criticism I get, especially because I love old school games as well (N64,NES, SNES, Dreamcast, etc.). Even though they call themselves "Gamers" none of them has ever played any street fighter or mega man games. Either way, I'm happy with the consoles I have and I really don't care what others say.

I have a Wii, but someone thought I liked "child-friendly" games and used example like Saints Row and CoD. I say both are garbage. CoD is not the greatest game ever. Halo and Goldeneye are far superior games. And Saints Row is just a Grand Theft Auto clone, but GTA is still the superior series. Your story amazes me as I have been there before and will be there again when WiiU/X720 comes out
I think Sonic 1 is probably the best in the series Mainly because it's just so fun. Yeah, the Labyrinth Zone can be annoying...but honestly I found spots in Sonic 2 much more annoying than that. Once you get used to Sonic's speed underwater, and spike dodging, it's not bad at all. It's just a fun game.
Also the Labyrinth zone is the only Sonic water level that really fustrated me (and that's mostly only because of the damn boss), Hydrocity Zone from Sonic 3 on the other hand is actually one of my favorite Sonic levels.
console wars are stupid, I grew up with nintendo with my brother but then the xbox 360 came out. When he got one he never played a nintendo game again. I eventually got an xbox 360 and i love mine but i still always play nintendo. He only owns a ps3 (which he doesn't play) and an xbox 360. Those are the only systems he play and no one in my school even talks about nintendo games which is a real shame.
I agree with you, Console Wars were lame back in the day and now that all consoles apart the Wii are pratically identical, it's even more pointless, Apart from a Gameboy Color and Advance I never really grew up with Nintendo (born and raised on Sega), but nowadays I play mainly NES and SNES games because they kick so much ass!

The whole "it slows the game down" criticism doesn't really hold water for me (no pun intended), honestly Sonic 1 isn't even that fast to begin with, especially compared to later games, Green Hill Zone is there to hook you in, but the rest of the game is pretty straightfoward platforming, there's a lot more avoiding obstacles than running. If they made a Sonic game that was nothing but running down hills and through loops I would get pretty bored.
I agree with everything in this review, although I would give special mention to the stunning music in Marble Zone & I feel Sega rectified all the faults when they made Sonic 2 :-)

Hey kwing, just out of curiosity, how old were you when you beat Ninja Gaiden? I was 11 and I also didn't use a game genie, although I spent about 6 hours playing the final stages over and over because of repeatedly dying on the final boss.
Im really bad with Math. I beat NG 1 & 2 around the same time i think around 91 or 92. I did at my friends house and we played both games the whole night. He couldn't get very far, so I beat the game for him. When the NG trilogy came out i beat that too. I don't have it anymore. Plus I just like the Nes ver's better now anyway.

I have to say, the easiest boss ever in a sonic game was in the first sonic the hedgehog for the sega game gear (a portable system that had a full color backlit screen at the time of the original game boy, but it was a brick). Robotnik just floated back and forth above you allowing you to hit him. Eventually he would come down for an attack (that was very easy to dodge) but it was very easy to kill him before he got the chance.

Wow thank you so much. The console wars are retarded. I like the Wii most in this generation. It has my same opinion as the gamecube; great but not awesome. And the only thing they do is complain about graphics and limited online play. I love the retro graphics and I don't care about online play. And stop telling me it's for kids; E means "everyone."
being a kid back than was so better. I was born in 1994 and I played a lot of games of my dad and my brothers when I was very little. I wish we could just go back, these games where so much better somepeople say the graphics are bad and stuff, but I like them more than the realistic graphic these days.
@hoi88kal yeah...... i miss the days when graphics didn't really matter. sure, they did rave about it when a new console came out, but still. i personally think that games today are for the most part fuckin' stupid. i miss the days where fps' were hard to come by, because now you go to gamestop and like half the selection is fps, another 25% are rpg, 10% action/adventure, 5%fighting, 5%platforming and 5% other.
@lucymydog1995 FPS were back then also great. Doom, Wolfenstein 3D, Blood, Duke Nukem, Heretic and a lot more. I hate the army FPS games like Call of Duty.

I didn't like Starlight Zone, save for the music, it felt like a rather large difficulty spike and the Orbonauts... OH THE ORBONAUTS. I hate those guys. The fans were also annoying.

The one that bugged me the most was the Labirynth zone one...
When I played the game I was so eager to see how the bosses/machines looked like, and their way to beat them, but when i saw the labyrinth one I seriously was mad at the devlopers...I mean they just made him fly up and you had to dodge obstacles you alredy faced in the zone.
I was born in the 64 era so my first mario game was mario 64. i didn't know about sonic until i was 7. I have the sonic game on my cell phone but that doesn't really count. I remember i went to my nana's house and she had a nes and only had super mario bros. The was really good for a 3 year old and i got to 1-3. The most annoying boss was the underwater boss.

I love Sonic Games, the old school ones anyway. I'm not into many of the more recent ones. I did however enjoy The Dark Brotherhood on the DS. It was interesting to see Sonic in an RPG. I pretty much agree with everything you said here about the first title. This one has always been a real challenge for me compared to 2. I hate, hate, hate the under water levels. That was definitely a big mistake on the developers part. Under water works for Mario, not so much for a speedster like Sonic.
I agree with this review 100%, granted I am a huge sonic fan, and mario fan, I'd have to say equal, but its true, these games do have their bad moments, and as for Sonic's career, I wasn't too impressed with Sonic 4, but its enjoyable, and hope Sonic Colors will be Sonic's big comeback.
@misspenguinink well sir you can download it from the wii virtual console for 800 wii points. there are a whole bunch of ways you can play this game. you would just have to look around if you know what i mean, either tho i bought mine on the wii. if you have a 360 or ps3 there is always that sonic classic collection.
As for the boss battles I really dont know which one got me the most stressed, but i couldnt stand labrynth stage, i mean the boss battle was quite easy... When i didnt die from a stupid trap, still hate labrynth stage, still love this game

for me Sonic 2 is still the best 2D platformer of all time, but this is where it all began. It's the first game i've ever played whole in my life and it's a damn good game.
i kinda find this game almost perfect but i soooo agree with you when you say the Labyrinth Zone is frustrating. IT IS! The challenge of it isn't that hard for me, but it's just boring sometimes.
But hey, the music just makes up for that! What a tune they put on that stage.
One thing no one brings up about the series is that the first games, as well as Sonic Heroes, have this theme of magic versus technology like Power Rangers. Sonic uses 7 magic Chaos Emeralds to battle an evil scientist and his technology. Sure its cheating when Tails has a plane and Sonic can win on his own, but using the power of Super Sonic vs Robotnik's best tech kind of feels like that to me.

It was my 2nd sonic game for the Sega Genesis and your right about 3 bad things about the game I did not like was the Labyrinth Zone and the Boss Fight in Labyrinth Zone and the Special stages in Sonic 1. 2-d is never dead. to bad thats not the case with the legend of zelda. they should make a 2-d zelda game. side scrolling so they could improve things that zelda 2 wasnt capable of back then

For me Sonic & Knuckles was the 1st game i ever played(even if i only made it to the end of Flying Battery)and i have to say it really got me into games and all these console wars are just stupid.Im the only one in my class who owns a WII,actually plays games besides COD and doesn't act a like jerk when i come walking into school with a new mario,sonic ect.(thats kinda why i dont have that many friends)i miss the good old days. :(

I have to say, the easiest boss ever in a sonic game was in the first sonic the hedgehog for the sega game gear (a portable system that had a full color backlit screen at the time of the original game boy, but it was a brick). Robotnik just floated back and forth above you allowing you to hit him. Eventually he would come down for an attack (that was very easy to dodge) but it was very easy to kill him before he got the chance.

This was my first ever game, I loved it then, and I love it now. The 4th boss battle is the only one that actually gets me nowadays, and it does so a lot!

Wow thank you so much. The console wars are retarded. I like the Wii most in this generation. It has my same opinion as the gamecube; great but not awesome. And the only thing they do is complain about graphics and limited online play. I love the retro graphics and I don't care about online play. And stop telling me it's for kids; E means "everyone."

being a kid back than was so better. I was born in 1994 and I played a lot of games of my dad and my brothers when I was very little. I wish we could just go back, these games where so much better somepeople say the graphics are bad and stuff, but I like them more than the realistic graphic these days.

@hoi88kal yeah...... i miss the days when graphics didn't really matter. sure, they did rave about it when a new console came out, but still. i personally think that games today are for the most part fuckin' stupid. i miss the days where fps' were hard to come by, because now you go to gamestop and like half the selection is fps, another 25% are rpg, 10% action/adventure, 5%fighting, 5%platforming and 5% other.

I didn't like Starlight Zone, save for the music, it felt like a rather large difficulty spike and the Orbonauts... OH THE ORBONAUTS. I hate those guys. The fans were also annoying.

Lbyrinth zone boss sucks but my least favorite boss is the one in spring yard zone, because he takes away your platforms.

I'm not a huge fan specifically to Nintendo, I just love Zelda to bits, I don't care which system they're on, as long as I can still play great Legend of Zelda games in the furture, I'm cool

The one that bugged me the most was the Labirynth zone one...
When I played the game I was so eager to see how the bosses/machines looked like, and their way to beat them, but when i saw the labyrinth one I seriously was mad at the devlopers...I mean they just made him fly up and you had to dodge obstacles you alredy faced in the zone.

I was born in the 64 era so my first mario game was mario 64. i didn't know about sonic until i was 7. I have the sonic game on my cell phone but that doesn't really count. I remember i went to my nana's house and she had a nes and only had super mario bros. The was really good for a 3 year old and i got to 1-3. The most annoying boss was the underwater boss.

Kwing, thank you for geat reviews! It made me smile when you were talking about the "system wars". I fell the same way! It's not that I woun't play the Xbox or the Playstation, it's just the ammount of money isn't worth what I'd actually use them for. I will play them, not pay for them. People always ask me why, and I tell then and they look at me like I'm not "cool" Anyway that's why I don't like getting into those kinds of situations. I love Sonic Games, the old school ones anyway. I'm not into many of the more recent ones. I did however enjoy The Dark Brotherhood on the DS. It was interesting to see Sonic in an RPG. I pretty much agree with everything you said here about the first title. This one has always been a real challenge for me compared to 2. I hate, hate, hate the under water levels. That was definitely a big mistake on the developers part. Under water works for Mario, not so much for a speedster like Sonic.

I agree with this review 100%, granted I am a huge sonic fan, and mario fan, I'd have to say equal, but its true, these games do have their bad moments, and as for Sonic's career, I wasn't too impressed with Sonic 4, but its enjoyable, and hope Sonic Colors will be Sonic's big comeback.

@misspenguinink well sir you can download it from the wii virtual console for 800 wii points. there are a whole bunch of ways you can play this game. you would just have to look around if you know what i mean, either tho i bought mine on the wii. if you have a 360 or ps3 there is always that sonic classic collection.

As for the boss battles I really dont know which one got me the most stressed, but i couldnt stand labrynth stage, i mean the boss battle was quite easy... When i didnt die from a stupid trap, still hate labrynth stage, still love this game

i kinda find this game almost perfect but i soooo agree with you when you say the Labyrinth Zone is frustrating. IT IS! The challenge of it isn't that hard for me, but it's just boring sometimes.
But hey, the music just makes up for that! What a tune they put on that stage.

One thing no one brings up about the series is that the first games, as well as Sonic Heroes, have this theme of magic versus technology like Power Rangers. Sonic uses 7 magic Chaos Emeralds to battle an evil scientist and his technology. Sure its cheating when Tails has a plane and Sonic can win on his own, but using the power of Super Sonic vs Robotnik's best tech kind of feels like that to me.

That was a great review kNIGHTWING01! I had many memories of this game playing with my Best Friend. Everytime I die we always take turns as we were kids! It was my 2nd sonic game for the Sega Genesis and your right about 3 bad things about the game I did not like was the Labyrinth Zone and the Boss Fight in Labyrinth Zone and the Special stages in Sonic 1. Hey! I used to have this game when I was younger about 5+... I guess.. Not very sure... Like a ps2 but not disc... A thick cartridge of some sort... Now I'm 11 and it just like... spoil or something.. But I always can't pass the lava stage... The second one because there wasn't save games at that time... I think... It has been very long since then...

2-d is never dead. to bad thats not the case with the legend of zelda. they should make a 2-d zelda game. side scrolling so they could improve things that zelda 2 wasnt capable of back then
