  • There was so much variety in the 80's it was so vast. There was rock, punk, new wave, heavy metal, rap, dance and just so many different styles to name. Almost every band had something new to offer and it was real. It was a golden-age for music.

  • faltou b-52, legal tander.

    luiz lapa brasil

  • Is that Steve Strange on front left at 1:15?

  • 80s were great, I was there and can testify to that.

  • So much amazing music came out of the 80s! It's too bad "80s music" has such negative connotations.

  • -Gary Numan is the MAN !!!

  • nice version of down in the park.

  • Bowie = Total Badass

  • First song made me happy, I think it's Peter Gabriel's best song. Also love that Gary Numan song. Surprisingly great list.

  • i <3 synthesizers

  • Cool that the Bowie video goes into the Visage video, since Steve Strange is in the Bowie video too!!!

  • 1 peter gabriel 2 bowie 3 visage 4 duran 5phsychedelic furs 6 flock of seagulls 7 eurithymics 8 alphaville 9 gary numan and tubeway army!!!! 10 john foxx!! yay 80s FTW mostly trash or pissweak wannabes these days (occassionally a good one pops up now and then) m48 :) but music will never be as good as it was then :(

  • I wouldn't call much of this new wave - a lot of it is punk, glam and techno.

  • True but they all are good and thats only possible in the 80's.

  • 1 alt 2 alt 3 new wave 4 new wave 5 new wave 6 new wave 7 alt 8 alt 9 new wave 10 new wave no punk no glam no techno

    i know i was there peace m48 :)

  • thank you for including japan!

  • This ain't New Wave...what are you on?

  • Well done! 80's rules all the way!

  • The lead singer from Flock Of Seagulls looks mighty creepy

  • peter gabriel new wave....really

  • uh yea... really

  • yeah how

  • The last song is horrible. Thanks for the video.

  • Crappy sound quality, but awesome music !

  • A truely outstanding collection! Brings back memories of long-ago days! Brilliant selection, thanks for posting!

  • OMG!!! Visage, JAPAAAAAAAAAAAN, Psychedelic Furs, Foxx, oh my... I´m 28... and my parents use to say I was born a 'Synther lady'! lol... Well, they´re right! ;) Cheers from Rio/ Brazil!!!

  • David Bowie New Wave? WTF?!

  • I'm having a problem telling the difference between new wave and dark wave.( I'm a too young for 80's music but I love it anyway)

  • I would say Dark Wave is a more recent Sub Genre of New Wave! But that's just my opinion and I'm sure lots of people would disagree...

  • back in the 80's we called " dark wave" goth, it was more about the look and additude, (I.E. -Sisters of Mercy, Sousie and the Banchies, Lord of the New Church,) dress in black, and think you were cool,...thats goth, aka, dark wave

  • whats the difference between new wave, electropop and Synthpop?

  • Good question! and what about electroclash and electronica?

  • New Wave sure was a broad-ass genre, maybe a little too broad. Aren't songs like "I Ran" by Flock of Seagulls in the same new wave category as this weird-ass "games without frontiers"??

  • Never seen some of these, thanks Coz!

  • Your welcome! ;)

  • Upsss.. I thought i still checking the 80's hits video. :x

  • well it's all 80's and its all music... Right? :0)

It's just I seem to get a lot of would be New Wave purists commenting on this video and they have a habit of going off on one... check out some of the earlier comments if you need a good laugh!

    Have a Great Day!

  • Roxy music missing here !

  • LOL... Waits for the string of comments saying 'Roxy Music are not New Wave'

But I agree Roxy Music would have fitted well.... :)

  • Great selection. I would like to have u for my new wave top 100 that I'm making.

  • Sounds Interesting! ;)

  • Great selection!

  • Thanks!

  • 0Montespan im not gonna argue semantics with a KID who wasnt even born at the time of new wave..LMFAO yes ur a true musical scientist who knows it all about NEW WAVE when the simple fact is.. the time these songs were out you werent even a thought in your daddies head so please try to use your LACK OF AGE elsewhere like on a jonas bros video where you might have more knowledge than on here where you know nothing about the time or categories of music

  • ok to all the idiots claiming david bowie eurythmics peter gabriel and gary numan arent new wave perhaps you should travel back in time and listen to radio stations like WLIR out on long island in NY and tell that station they werent new wave and they would be as shocked as me since they were A NEW WAVE ONLY radio station and played them all the time.. and if u go intoa music store still nowadays and look in the new wave section(yes they have that section) you will find all those groups there

  • неудачная подборка(

  • Allucinanti i capelli a 3:26

  • e pensare che D. Sylvian all'epoca fu eletto il canatnte pop rock piu' sexy di tutti tempi!

  • Never heard that last song before. Very funky!! I liked it!

  • *grins while reading the comments about New Wave or not*

Why do people have to pidgeonhole everything? I never saw a single vinyl having a "This is New Wave" sticker on it. Everyone has his own suggestion of music styles and it's ok this way ;)

  • LOL! ... I agree...

I get more laughs than enough reading the comments that arrive here...

  • Comment removed

  • That's what I did - posted my opinion.

  • who did Alphaville plagiarise?

  • Comment removed

  • i don't think alphaville plagiarised. they were just in the trend.

  • Listen guy, David Bowie is glam rock, Eurythmics is synthpop John foxx would almost be early industrial more than new wave at best it's also synthpop, Peter Gabriel in general is not new wave but this song sort of is, I guess. But Gary Numan is more dark wave than new wave, overall good songs, but 5 out of ten definantly aren't new wave

  • I don't agree with you man. New Wave is the general term - industrial and dark wave or synth pop can be its subcategories . All these songs were written more or less late 70s and early 80s and artists like Gabriel or Bowie were always into trends so we can call their songs of that time as new wave.

  • peter gabrel new wave ?! fuck off!!

  • 'Games Without Frontiers' was New Wave, whichever way you want to cut it.

  • new wave...for which planet??

  • Look, I'm not arguing the point that Gabriel's music can in any way be generalised as 'New Wave', because it clearly isn't. However, like most true creative geniuses he always had a finger on the pulse of musical trend. If you're seriously telling me that you don't think 'Games Without Frontiers' is New Wave, then what exactly do you think it should be categorised under?

  • what about calling it no wave : )

  • love it

  • what's the name of the third song? please, i need it, thanks in advance

  • visage - fade to grey

  • i hadn't notice that the name of the song appears on the screen haha :p. but thanks anyway =)

  • John Foxx, underpass!

    & he's still making music.

    Best wishes.

  • Fade to Grey by Visage....

  • Google/Youtube you SUCK SUCK SUCK....get RID of the shitty pop ups that fuck up these videos, or go kill yourselves you spam whores

  • ...why not get Adblock?

  • David Bowie The best!

  • All this pablum. Flying Lizards and Devo, and Nina Hagen were real New Wave. You do have Gary Numan, who I see as part of the real New Wave. I do have to admit I listened to The Furs back then, and I danced to the Eurythmics- there wasn't much else to listen to in Phoenix at the time.

  • yeah tenacios D xD

  • Metal was murdered by New Wave. Doesn't matter if you liked it or not. At the time this was HUGE. The influence from New Wave and synthpop is evident in nearly every single piece of music produced after the fad.

  • dude im talking about a song by tenacious d

  • I don't agree. Many New Wave groups are still around, still selling albums, and are still popular.

  • lol, it's from a song by Jack Black =)

  • I grow up with these music. I love it.

  • 'New Romantic' covers most of them, but DEFINITELY not New Wave!

  • ah synthpop

  • Sorry, this ain'y New Wave!

  • the eurythmics version scared me way more than the marilyn manson version of sweet dreams

  • gary numan!!

  • this not the new wave i know, maybe just 3 songs are new wave.

  • mamamia

  • to the comment underneath, im not one to comment on other users but i cannot resist this one. new wave was your life ? and you have'nt heard half of these songs ? granted, a few are not "new wave" but if you like the music you should know frigging every one of them ! and judging by your favs. on your home page brittany spears & dr dre i dont think i need to say any more....daft yank. sorry. bit harsh but come on !

  • Um, lol.

  • Great choice of tunes........................... so many more though to chooose from

Early 80s best era for music by far

  • I think nothing is better than John Foxx's Underpass I don't care how renowned David Bowie is

  • underpassss

  • whaT????........TOOOO'

  • I'ts a shame that when someone mentions '80's music', usually people think of the ultra-cheesy pop from 85-89. What they dont think about it the pure awesomeness of new wave and the many great bands of the genre.

  • Yea, but the worst is that if I try to tell them that, they are bad just about that their favorite 80's pop shit doesn't have much in common with new wave genre. Fuck, I have never seen even Cabaret Voltaire in compilations of that shity pop type;P It's nice to hear someone understands this^^

  • Keep those Brit rockers coming!! You got everything from the grownups (Bowie and Gabriel) to the synth siren of Eurythmics with a fair dash of Gary Numan!! Awesome!!

  • this is the best mash-up I've seen

    japan, john foxx, and visage.....amazing

  • its wierd how much people changes after a decade;)

  • I'm a huge Peter Gabriel fan - love his sound.

  • Thanks for this! It's ace!

  • Have u seen that friends episode where chandler has a haircut like that dude from a flock of seagulls

  • That list is nearly all made of pop shit, only visage is true new wave here -_-

  • ...what?

  • Yeah Im like wtf why cant I find a good playlist of actual new wave shit.

People seem to think anything from the 80s is new wave :(

  • Bowie shouldn't be included on this list. He's merely cashing in to that New Romantic phenomenon.

  • desde el minuto 15 sale el cantante de visage

  • en ese video sale el de visage

  • I love all of these songs-

do people really want the 80s back?- I would, it don't mean that it couldn't also be innovative too eh?

some complain that there are no new trends - but even hearing good 80s styled music again would be nice

  • thats all we've had this decade, 80s styled music. You have Electroclash, Electropop, Futurepop, etc. Its been an 80s flashback this decade. There are a few bands that have innovated this decade, but not many. There isnt any new mass musical movements, its all micro movements these days. probably due to the internet and being able to access such a huge amount of diverse music at our finger tips.

  • well put. Grunge and Jungle/DnB were the last IMO. Still I like the diversity and cross pollenation of today

  • its starting to actually take its own form these days. Its just taken up till 2009 for the 00's to stand on their own.

  • HII, actually I will update my previous statement with post-hardcore and post-rock.

What do you think stands "out on thier own" in 09?

  • I remember, doing the time warp. (and falling alseep on the sidewalk)

  • what a great artistic time; look at the vids of visage, david bowie, flock of seagalls, numan. Pure Art, if yopu ask me! Bring back the 80's

  • Where's Kraftwerk??? Kraftwerk are the god and father of the new wave with Das Model and Neon Lights!!! :o

  • While Kraftwerk are fantastic and could easily have fitted into this video, I would say they where the god fathers of Electronica rather than New Wave!

However their important place in the history of music is NOT lost on me. :)

  • good songs nonetheless. (apart from big in japan maybe!)

  • VERY TRUE>>KRAFTWERK ARE THE god FATHERS OF ELECTRONICA, I AGREE>>COMPUTER WOULD! LONG LIVE THE 80'S!

  • Kraftwerk is also a New Wave pioneer. Das Modell is a great example.

  • Kraftwerk was Synthpop and Minimal Electro Pop. Not New Wave.

  • Synthpop, with slight new wave influences

  • Thanks for the memories!

  • Very cool video, I liked how you had a decent amount of each song featured.....now I have to go look up each and every full-length version, lol!!

  • Awesome list!

Put the Human League and Duran Duran in and its perfect!

  • UM WHERE THE HELL IS HUMAN LEAGUE?!

  • Thanks for the John Foxx.

  • John Foxx's music is so unique......Really epitomizes the "new wave" sound.

  • seria bueno que alguien haga un ranking de acuerdo a los generos del New Wave mis favoritos son Ice House y Depeche Mode

  • No estoy mu seguro pero los inicios de Depeche Mode no son muy New Wave , ellos son mas techno big difference

  • BOWIE !!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • That's New Romantic

  • yeah well theres few videos that claims George is not new romantic but new wave

theres not A LOT of difference

also i think visage is def new roamntic not "new wave" then

damn i dont know i wasnt around when this stuff was popular im only 14

    JEEEZE :)

  • Yeah, over the in the US new new wave seems to mean "new romantic" not "new Wave". Course it's wrong being English music. Anyway I've gotta say for a youngling you've got a keen retro eye

  • who cares?

u like metal, thats great, me too. but come on...... i dont like new rap music, but i dont go onto those vids and put "new wave kicks this shits ass". so yeah, this isnt a metal mix, its a new wave one.soooooo deal with it :)

  • He's only saying what he likes know need to dig at him...

  • heh.......i know, i have bad days. =]i think what i was just trying to say is that you can give your opinon, just try to do it not as "this kicks this's ass" i mean i just see it too much everywhere :)

  • motley crue and shit blew balls. listen to real metal Necrophagist, bloodbath, wintersun. And new wave is amazing, first band i saw was depechemode

  • that must have beeen awesome =D

  • New wave was the best. In LA we had KROQ and it rocked all day and all night. I just want to go back to being 14 thru 20 when life was fun. This crap world we live in today sucks..So does my mid life crisis. I feel 20 but I am 43, it sucks so fucking much. 80's forever. I used to always have girlfriends and had Sex. Bitches today are not interested.
