  • DH are Libertarians who go to a UU church. We're there to enrich our spirits, not join a political movement so we fit in just fine. We believe in the rights of all people including those who are economically lower on the ladder as well as those in our GBLT communities. We're very socially liberal, but want for our country to be fiscally conservative. We don't care how another person lives, as long as it doesn't get in the way of any one else's freedom.

  • I think everyone at UU congregations is liberal on social issues. Some might vote Republican because they oppose Keynesian economics.

  • "Skirts365 --- Just what do you think Mellon did? The US bought silver at a price OVER market value & the silver producers wanted even more. Mellon wouldn't pay more than he legally had to, I think he did the taxpayers a service. What Supreme Court case by name are you objecting to?

    --- Lev

  • No I didn't "forget" that Taft was CJ of the Supremes, your contention was that President Taft using Treasury Secretary Mellon did something wrong, fact was Mellon did not work for Taft. If Mellon did something he did it during Harding, Coolidge or Hoover's regimes, why not blame them?

And, no the thread was not about "great people" but about Republicans who were Unitarians. I don't claim they were great ONLY Unitarian AND Republican.

  • Robert Welch, founder of the John Birch Society, was a Unitarian. So too was Roman Hruska, US Senator from Nebraska in the 1970s was Republican & Unitarian.William Howard Taft, conservative Republican President was also an active layman in the Unitarian Church. And Republicans, Elliot Richardson, Bob Packwood.

  • @LevSinestra Elliott Richardson was also a falling down drunk alcoholic who "persuaded" some cops to not haul him in for drunk driving (Attorney General) WH Taft, Skull & Bones Society of Yale and worse, PILGRIMS SOCIETY member, allowed Treasury Secretary Mellon (Pilgrims Society, British Crown organization)) to steal $14 million from smaller mining companies in the late 1920's by violating terms of 1918 Pittman Act Come on now if Joseph Stalin was a UU, would you be boasting about him also?

  • @skirts365 So how would stating a fact that Richardson and Taft were Unitarians suggest "boasting". I am neither proud nor ashamed of these facts, they just are. If Stalin had been a Unitarian and a Republican, which was the original question, I would have indicated that too.

If Richardson was a drunk would that alter the fact that he was both a Republican and a Unitarian? And if Taft did this or that would that mean he could not also be a Unitarian and Republican?

  • @skirts365 BTW, William Howard Taft was President, 1909-1913, and Andrew Mellon was Treasury Secretary 1921-1932 under Harding, Coolidge and Hoover. So how did Taft "allow" Mellon to steal, if he did?

  • @LevSinestra You FORGOT to see about Taft on the Supreme Court---that's where the theft was illegitimately authorized. To answer your other statement, anyone reading the thread can see how you're being devious. The list itself is a direct claim "look at all the great people who've joined us," then it turns out that some were/are ROGUES, not people looking out for fairplay! If UU wanted to clean up their act (they won't as it means income reduction) they'd boot out all mental illness HUCKSTERS

  • where can I find this church? Sounds interesting. Only problem is I am an atheist. I dont believe in fairies, or Middle easten gods

  • @ofosusam There are usually UU churches in most cities, though not many once you get into more rural areas. I live in Nebraska and we have, I think three in the whole state. But if you go to the east or west coast you will find many more. I am atheist, too, but I enjoyed growing up in this church which encouraged me to decide for myself by providing information on most major religions in my Sunday school classes. You don't have to believe in fairies to believe in religious freedom.

  • @ExperimentalFilmCrew Cool. What I found interesting was that the preacher reads email comments and responds in front of the congregation. Wow. I dont think that will ever happen in the Catholic church I was raised in. Over there you just follow what your told and if it does not make any sense you have to pray harder and if that does not work it is a divine mystery.

  • I, personally, am not opposed to immigration just so long as the immigrant goes through the proper channels to become a LEGAL citizen. I AM anti-amnesty because it's a slap in the face to those who went through the proper legal channels. I do not oppose social programs for the less-fortunate, but I DO oppose government surveillance and the nanny state. "Radical" means a hard-core leftist, whereas "Reactionary" means a hard-core rightist.

  • There are Democrats and Republicans in UUism, but I sure as hell hope there aren't any Libertarians. Libertarians should have the good sense to NOT join UUism.

  • Actually, this answer gave me the courage to visit my local UU church. I am a libertarian.

  • We had a Republican at our Unitarian Universalist chapel, but he was asked to leave because he had radical Tea Party beliefs. He supported a congressional candidate who left his last job under a cloud of suspicion and a investigation that the Republican governor had stopped.

  • @MrMKH2010 They really asked him to leave just because of his political beliefs? That's awful.

  • @JonathanDLynch Our congregation is really liberal, and our interim minister frequently rails against what the conservatives are doing in Washington to help only the wealthiest of Americans and corporations.

  • @MrMKH2010 Then your "interim minister" is being less than 100% truthful. When conservatives lowered tax rates in 1981, ALL tax rates were cut substantially. In spite of that, federal revenues from those taxes almost doubled by 1990, from $519 to $990 Billion per year. Why did the deficit grow? Because liberals refused to stop spending! And who do you think paid most of those new taxes? Clue: It wasn't someone on food stamps. It came from people who had money to invest in businesses.

  • @MrMKH2010 Liberals who won't disavow the mental health movement, when the MHM represents efforts to maintain social status quo, not "health" of any sort just majority prejudice against change in 1958 Horace English ID'd women in pants as transvestites, psych cult stopped doing this due to majority practice, but they did oppose change as long as it was a minority thing. UU harbors mental health cultists like mafia harboring hit men yeah come here we replaced sin concept with mental illness idea

  • @MrMKH2010 Define "radical".

  • @TheNebgreen Anti immigration, anti amnesty, cut welfare, social security and medicare, no more hand outs to the poor, let them starve if they are too lazy to go out and get a job, reserve the Ministers Discretionary Fund for the well to do members who are temporarily embarrassed etc, ad nauseum, ad vomitus.

  • I'm an independent conservtive who is a Deist. I'm a mix of views but I'm against big government and the amount of tax we must pay. P.S. never move to NJ unless you enjoy paying almost 10 grand a year on your house, which is seperate from your mortgage!

  • Actually, there's nothing to learn from neither GOP nor Democrats. They do not speak in good faith. They are capitalists, marketers, public relations flacks, careerists. They will say whatever is necessary to support the Wall Street - Pentagon - CIA order. They lie when they campaign - just like Obama did - promising things they have no intention of delivering, then hiring capitalist thieves and murderers to continue as usual.

  • A very thoughtful message. I totally appreciate that.

  • Is she wearing the gay flag around her neck? This seems more like a cult created by marxists.

  • @Castaril Yeah, since Marxists are the problem! So many of them, you know!

  • @Castaril Whether or not it's a "gay flag", I hardly see how that has anything to do with Marxism.

  • @Ashiman12 Nope, it's not a gay pride flag. The colors are wrong.

  • I visited this church about a year ago and was made to feel very welcome by everyone I met there with the exception of one person. As an African-American skeptic, it is hard for me to find a place where I can feel comfortable. I can honestly say that I may have visited this church again if the one person who made me feel unwelcome had not been her- the pastor.

  • I am sure that it is not entirely impossible to find conservatives with libertarian sensibilities in the Unitarian Church. As a socially & economically progressive, I belong to a moderately theological conservative Anglo-Catholic parish whereby there is a Unitarian congregation just around the corner.

  • Don't agree with her on that conservatives believe men should be head of household and the main thing about conservatives is they believe in less government, fiscal responsibility, and being responsible for ones actions.

  • Hey, the last Unitarian President of the United States was a conservative Republican, William Howard Taft.

  • wow i thought all republicans and devil worshipers were the same, my bad.

  • This is a most timely and appreciated video, as are the rest from this church. The minister is very perceptive and presents her material in a clear and engaging manner. As someone who is theologically liberal but fairly politically conservative (except on gay rights and women's issues) I find her thoughts here particularly welcome. Keep up the good work!

  • @CanonDevil In other words, you are an economic conservative who is socially liberal? I know many people like this, and I am actually surprised that there aren't more people like this in the Unitarian Church. I am a political left-wing person that attends a moderately conservative Anglican Church. Why? I prefer the older prayer book, and I had a friendlier reception from them than in the Episcopal Church. Over a year ago, I was confirmed by the Bishop of my Diocese.

  • thanks for this video...it's something not easily understood...i love my UU church, and most of us are liberal leaning, in fact only one of us is conservative. He's extremely active in the church and one of my dearest friends...while i find myself disagreeing with him a lot, i learned from him to be more tolerant about those differences, as he's a perfect example of that tolerance, all the more impressive since he is the only conservative there!....thank you again...a great clarification!
