...The campus caters to over 50 000 students. A lot of those students live in dorm-style residences where they rely on the meal plan at York to eat. I wasn't aware it was "corporatization" to offer students as many food choices as possible. Imagine the horror of being able to get your hair cut or visit the pharmacy right on campus, instead of driving 20 minutes away.
@your81 And as someone else has said, the campus is by Jane and Finch. The security cameras aren't to watch you, Big Brother style, as you buy a "corporatized" taco. They're to try to ensure your safety. As for free speech, walk through Vari Hall. Plenty of students voice their opinions, regardless of whether there's a Popeye's on campus or not.
York has plenty of areas of potential improvement, agreed. But this is just ridiculous. Other than for entertainment value, disregard this video.
@your81 yet regardless of all these camara's for "our protection" there have been a number of laptop thefts and nothing is being done about it ...i personally know of 2 incidents (there are more in Excalibur)
york wastes our hard earned cash on meaningless renovations (like the ugly pieces of wood in vari hall) rather than ensuring that the necessities are met (if you have ever had an administrative problem you know what i mean)
Based on your video, you have tried to the convey the idea that because there exist RESTAURANTS, BOOKSTORES, AND SECURITY at York, the school is being invaded by a "corporate rule". Who else is going to provide your food and your books, aside from these companies? And how does the apparent "corporatization" of York impede the free speech of the student body?
sjbelford, you are an idiot. The statement that York is becoming "arena for corporatization" doesn't mean anything. I believe that you THINK you're making a profound statement on the socioeconomic or political state of the institution, of the university, or of our entire society. In reality you don't understand what "corporatization", as you have clearly demonstrated in your video, and in your poor and completely arbitrary analogy of York to a Wal-Mart.

I don't understand why the businesses are bad, most of them aren't multi-million enterprises. They are just small businesses run by friendly people trying to make a living, some of the businesses are even Canadian chain restaraunts so it's good to see some homegrown sucess.
Sorry but I find it hilarious that you had to zoom in on a security camera - The school is almost on the corner of Jane and Finch for christ sakes!! Lol wtf else did you expect with a University of this size and the fact that you had to focus on one of the busiest buildings on campus.
Exelent!! As a fellow york student, i agree, it is like walmart! But how screwed are they gonna be when 50,000 undergrads demand a refund for the 2008/09 school year!! Plus, how will they then deal with next years double cohort? I'm tempted to get out while I still can!
I know every now and then people hate on you. All I have to say is that today NOV/4/2008 I experienced something bad. I was kicked out of tait mckenzie for a really stupid reason and what I think it is an overaction by the guard. I WANT TO MAKE THIS CLEAR TO THE WHOLE STUDENT BODY:
I DON'T FUCK WITH ANYONE THERE. I DON'T GO THERE TO TRY TO PICK UP CHICKS. I DON'T GO THERE TO MESS AROUND WITH ANYONE. I PAY THE SAME FEES THAT YOU PAID.
I want to say one more thing.... you fuckers pick on me .. today I got kicked out of the Tait Mckenzie center for a very very stupid reason and for something that is should not really have happened. I am going to say this as politely as possible..
I WANT DON'T GO THERE AND BOTHER ANYONE. I DON'T TALK TO GIRLS. I PRETTY MUCH STICK TO MY OWN. I HAVE PAID MY FEES...JUST LIKE ALL OF YOU. I HAVE THE SAME RIGHTS. I AM ASKING NICELY: PLEASE LET ME WORK OUT FREELY. FUCK! I DON'T FUCK WHITH ANYONE.....
No, I was replying to abown's response. I fucking hate york too. Now there it a strike to put the icing on another shitty year of money grabbing bullshit.
am a first year at york. live on res. this place is boring as fuk. damn commuter school. should have went western. but the courses and teachers are great at least thats a plus. it just lacks a sense of comunity an did not fulfill my expectations of what university life should be.
Actually to name a few: U of t is probably more corporate... york just looks that way because it is isolated. How the hell else are they going to survive in the middle of nowhere?. Campus food can only extend so much. And besides, other than the malll the university is not even that corp.
Try this:
U of Penn. The ivy league school. Damn straight corporate.... right in the middle of philly. Its modern ivy reputation has been build around wharton. Now that is corporate.
Not sure if the video makes the point quite clearly... I mean ... it is ok.. I get the point but the point is moot really in my opinion. There tons tons of other universities in north america that are so much more corporate than york university, please!. York is nothing!. You guys just look at it that way because there is york lanes but then again - THERE IS NOWHERE ELSE TO GO!. where the hell would stdns go for banking, food, groceries, medical and books??
Listen guys....to those that are feeling uneasy about York, believe me when I say there is nothing like it! I transferred from UofT to York and it was the best decision of my life...I love my life, my academics are great, and I've made tons of great friendships. Sure, York has many corporate businesses on campus...but what university doesn't? York may just have more than the average, perhaps to accomodate the fact that Keele campus is quite a distance from the business center of Toronto!
I decided to go to York for Biomedical starting in fall of 08 and first i was really happy but for some reason now im somewhat regretting not going to Guelph Uni for biomedical. PLEASE give me some reasons why York U is a good choice for reassurance because im feeling pretty down right now :(
I go to York. It's awesome. Sure there's York Lanes that's like a mall but that's just so students on campus have a place to go to in order to purchase books and food.
York professor's are awesome, the campus is great, and so are the people. You're going to love it! :)
what made you decide to enroll at YorkU, I'm curious to know, than Guelph for biomed. Guelph has a greater science faculty than York does at the moment. I've experienced the science faculty at York, it isn't so impressive overall. Many people assume that if you go to York, it will be easy to get a 4.0 gpa, but its not
Um... the nearest restaurants at York were at Keele and Finch. York is on the outskirts of the city, the campus needs York Lanes. You can't compare it to a corporation.
Although the case with Freeman-Maloy was unfair, I doubt the Pepsi vending machines, Popeye's or Blueberry Hill was to blame. I'm pretty sure it had to due more with the biases of the administration and student government.
erm, no it isn't. I work for York... and know that it isn't a fully know it isn't publicly owned. Although it receives money from the government, all Universities are private organizations. It isn't run by the Government, it's run by a Board of Governors. Thats why people pay tuition to go here... if it was public we wouldn't have to pay tuition.
franchises as they are the ones that are secure, and most popular. I agree there are problems with York, but it is not the same or comparable to Wal-Mart... I think that comparison is ridiculous. I also think that make a claim like, "However, with the recent hate crimes and expulsions for free speech related offences (Dan Freeman-Maloy) we the students are forced to become opressed under the coporate rule." is a little short sighted and riddled with illogical arguments. Let us not forget that
I go to York... and what I love about this particular video is the fact that it ignores so much. it ignores all the restaurants that are family owned. It ignores the non-franchise places to eat around campus... and also ignores the reason why York rents to franchises. Money. Money that can go to public services like security, which is badly needed on a campus as large as Keele. I might also point out that you focussed entirely on Yorklanes alone. It makes sense that there would be
woo i like this video. i had a choice between university of tornto and york and i chose york. ya there are a lot restaurants and other businesses but that just makes it convinient for both students and staff on and off residence. seriously would you rater go out for a 20 min walk off campus just to get an ice cream?
I'm probably going there in September. And yeah, when I saw some parts of it, I definitely got an empty urban feeling. But its gotta be pretty nice in the summer.
Thanks for that enlightening comment, it must have taken you forever to figure out the wording for that sentence because it's pretty complex. Although I am sure everyone enjoys thinking of you as an a-hole and an idiot, I would advise you to not write comments like that in the future; not because it's offensive to York students, but because it makes you look stupid for having a jaded and hateful attitude towards York University simply because they kicked you out for bad marks and poor grammar!
@FalconFreek York sucks compared to other schools. Anything u can think of at York is offered at better quality elsewhere. Don't waste ur time just go to UofT unless ur going into Schulich.
I go to York, and I have to say this place sucks compared to other schools.
