I love YES, Genesis, King Crimson, and many more, I saw all of them when they were touring in concerts in the 1970's, but I must say, that as far as musical comp, fusion abilities, the pure complex intricate music blends are far ahead of any of the people mentioned. Gentle Giant I think is only really appreciated by people who are/have been musicians trained in a classical tradition, who understand the how delicate and complex this music really is, it's excellent high art/music above the rest
@grangersmith Gentle Giant is great, but I have to say King Crimson is the best. I think their music is actually a little more intricate (EX. Larks Tongues in Aspic Part II), but I really prefer their sound mostly. Anyway, for what it's worth, that's my opinion.
@gryphonlaments Hey it's a toss up with me, once I think about it. King Crimson was fantastic, very complex what can I say, they both hold first place on my list, now that you brought it up. I was not even thinking about them when I wrote that. Very intricate music, and it's all a matter of taste, some like Lady GaGa, Brittany Spears, etc, and it's all a matter of taste! But I agree with you on King C! ;D
I accidentally discovered this LP one day in 1973 while thumbing through the racks. Didn't even know it existed, having acquired the taste with Octopus and Power and the Glory previously. My bro's and I were the only people we knew into these guys at the time. Anyway, I taped this immediately then took it with me on a month's gig in Crested Butte playing crappy pop music for disinterested skiers. My own private Glass House for months and months. Nobody else was interested since it wasn't YES !
Beauty is more important than delivering on stage or in the studio. Complexity is not the same thing as beauty and artistry.
This band delivers on many levels. Though Greg Lake had some less complex songs and a beautiful voice. This band has more interesting material that is more unique and creative. It is comparing apples with pears. I don't think anyone should compare this band with other prog bands. Their are many talented people out there. Complexity is not the only key for greatness.
@vishuiqual you touched a subject that is important to rate a band: serious musicians can deliver same product, regardless complexity of musical fiber, on the stage and GG are super in this. Try three friends, very nicely crafted album, all Shulmans are there
@vishuiqual They are excellent whether live or studio, no difference in skills and quality, Yes are great as well, no question about this, I have heard albums and live
Truly inspiration creative genius exposed! They have been hiding these gems. Someone just thanked me for turning them on to GG. People are starving for good music.
So many good parts and changes in this song...so much interest. Just as fresh as when it was first composed. And then to top it off Kerry tosses in a solo on what sounds like the marimba. So glad these guys shared their talents!

It doesn't matter whether they are great in the studio or better live, I rate them as the best progression experimental band I have heard of.
I think it is offensive to write YES and GENESIS as the highest rated comments here.
Have some respect and get a musical education.

the best of the bests!!!!!!!!!!!

@perdunchiki I agree, and especially live. But some of their studio work is great too.
I don't compare them to Yes and Genesis. I think they are beyond them, even though I love the band Yes.
