there are many books out, mostly fiction, but do portray what life was like as a young evacuee during the war. The chronicles of Narnia even have the topic within its pages, although i'm sure there were no lions and magical wardrobes back then :D
So glad I found this channel, and thanks for posting it!
Some kids were even shipped to North America to escape the threats posed at that time. (I read a book by one who was sent to Akron, Ohio that way. 10 years old, I think, he found it an adventure.)
The great events of life and history are left to mundane people to write about, but the mundane day-to-day life that meanwhile transpires during those events gets overlooked unless characters like you speak up. Cheers for doing so!
fascinating video, i didnt know that picture houses would just show films on a reel repeatedly, and its astonishing that such a dogfight could be seen by your younger self.
I love this. I remember sitting with my own grandfather and hearing stories from when he was a boy and in the army. I think the passing down of stories like this is so important. Thank you!
have experienced ease of life and riches, since North America has barely started to constrain domestic consumption and even if they did, the restrictions were much lighter than in hard pressed UK.
A lot of British kids have been sent to overseas (US, Canada) Peter, not just to the countryside nearby. (To ease the terrible supply crisis in UK, for example) Their most dangerous time was the actual sea-voyage through U-boat infested waters. However, at the end of the voyage, these scared, pale and somewhat underweight and skinny kids,
I just found You Tube and lucky me, I found you Peter. I'm listening to all your stories now. Mother,1926, grew up in Winchester. Eng. and Daddy,1924 from Ga.USA met there in the war. I'm off to buy a video camera. I love you and I'm waiting for your next video.
I've just spent last night and this morning watching all 30 of your videos... now I've run out of interesting things to do, so c'mon Peter, next one please :)
very interesting! thank you Peter for your contribution. I admire you for your computer skills. I am 33 and don't know (yet!) how to make and cut such a nice video. You motivate me to learn.
Your videos always entertain and bring some warmth to my heart, sir. It's things like this that make me happy that the internet allows you to share your experiences. This really is the bright side of youtube. Thanks!
Hello Peter...This is the first video of yours I've watched in the past few weeks. We've had some internet problems lately but we're o.k. now. I can't wait till your next "episode"! You are ADORABLE!
After watching some of your videos, I really wanted to know your opion towards mine, as far receiving support from youtube community, shocking real life footage, the war within America, please respond, I look forward to your opion.
Trust me, dear Sir. You will have many viewers for as long as you feel like making your videos. I'll certainly be one of them.
Glad you don't do scandalous but you're wrong about not doing "funny". You've made me smile at your good humor and vivid descriptions more than once. Your story about learning about girls made me laugh out loud. :-)
o man he left us with a cliffhanger about the cinema! can't wait until the next video i love watching them and thank you for taking time out of your day to make them.
God bless you, and your quest to tell it all. I'm here in my kitchen in New York watching you and listening to your calming voice, and being totally engaged by your stories.
Yeah I agree with you it is the kind of thing that you would expect particularly from immature individuals I just find it amazing that they bother posting such offensive comments, shame that
Hi Peter. I, like many other people throughout the world(!) enjoy your videos very much. As for the haters, I just wonder, as Im sure many other people do, what drives these people to go out of their way to try and upset someone and try and ruin it for everyone else, I think that it is a futile attempt at bullying and these people represent what is wrong with the world in this age. Keep it up as long as you have something new to tell people will be listening, Chris
For everyone that posts a nasty comment, there are another 500 who watch these and enjoy them immensely. I put it down to immaturity or simply childishness.
haha I love hearing about this stuff!! it's strange that a lot of people think that in the '30s and '40s people never had sex or did scandelous things!
Reminds me of when my grandpa used to tell me stories. Sometimes I'd think he was joking when he was telling them, but now that I think about it that I'm older now, I think he was probably telling the truth. :)
I was struck by the incongruity of being a normal 15 y/o spending a Saturday at the cinema only to leave and watch the real drama taking place in the sky...thank you again for these gems
I love stories thank you! ^.^ You remind me of my grandfather.... he sounded like you to well im not going to get into that and again thank you so much!
Listening to your stories makes me miss my grandparents all the more. It's been 20 years since my last grandparent passed away and I miss the stories they used to tell. Thank you :)
My Comment on your Profile Box got Jacked-Spammed Accidentally...so Sorry, I deeply apologize sincerely, Your kind understanding is very much appreciated!
Ha ha ha!! I've not laughed so HARD as when I heard the ending of this newest chapter! Peter, for goodness sakes, DON'T tell us if you got lucky or not one night at the cinema! The cliff-hanger was just too generous on your part! Bravo!!
Oh, Sir... I'm glad you decided to try this medium and share your stories! You are VERY entertaining, often very amusing, usually quite tender and totally endearing. Love some of your wry comments like "chatting up the girls" with that twinkle in your eye. It may be cathartic for you but it is pure delight for the rest of us.
Dogging fighting overhead, ouch! Nineteen years younger than you, my WOW experience was being on the flight deck as an AFROTC student and have two F-4's come in hot with one pulling vertical right in front of us with full power out of sight straight up. We were all deaf for a time, even with hands firmly over our ears. Love your stories.
I can't imagine what it must have been like to have seen dogfights overhead. I suppose your life felt very unsecured, really. And here I was thinking about the "angst" kids had during the cold war! Peanuts compared to in England during the war, I think!
Thanks again for your wonderful and informative stories. And for making me laugh - not telling if you got lucky or not! Hehe!
One of my favorite movies is "Hope and Glory" and your memories are even more fascinating because they come from first hand knowledge. I look forward to hearing "Hello You-Tubers" because I know that I'm settling in for a good time. You should copyright that phrase and make it a ringtone so that I can hear it every time my phone rings. Thanks Peter!
thanks for another fantastic series of memories, and peter, thanks for being ever the gentleman and not saying one way or the other re the cinema! (it's best left between you and them!)
"Good love is hard to find, you got lucky babe..."
Peter, awesome vid. Don't know if it's right to say that I enjoyed the dogfight part, but I did. Glad the Spitfire won, and sorry for how the other airman's mother must have felt.
Every night before bed, I lay there with my laptop and listen to one of your vids. It's like hearing a bedtime story. "hello You-tubers" is one of my favorite things about the videos. Great catchline. Keep up the good work geriqatric1927!
i was just thinking this myself, that your memory is brilliant. Amazing memory to remember all this with suck amazing detail even after all these years! I have a hard time even remembering my childhood and that was no 10 or 15 years ago. Just brilliant. Even before watching this i was thinking you must have a tremendous memory. Please keep up what you are doing.
well, who is there to say whether its accurate. The human memory can often invent things. I love peter. So this isn't a burn. Just a fact that I learned in psych 101.
Do Brits like geriatric1927? Or is it just Americans enchanted by the accent/britishness of him? I wonder how popular an American version of geriatric1927 would be.
Who cares where he was born? I wish I still had a grandfather to sit and B.S. with. You tube is world wide, so you don't know if it's Americans,Polish, Swiss, Aussies, Chinese, Brits, it's not about the accent, it's about him. Understand?
I'm still tuning in to each & every one of your vid-bites. In WWII I was issued, as with everyone else, a ration stamp book, to use with money to buy things. I had my mom buy the things I wanted, as I was just a year old... In the 50's, I used my dad's war booty as toys. My own military experiences were in the 60's. I wish all the wars were just video games. War Sucks!
I really enjoy your stories. My father was born in 1919 and is now living a relativley active life in the Seattle, Washington area in the US. He flew B29 bombers out of England during WWII. He was shot down over Germany, made a POW, escaped, and was recaptured. So much stuff for a very young man to have gone through! He won't talk about any of it though. Maybe that's why I appreciate your rememberances so much. Thanks.
Telling that part about the dogfight and the German pilot possibly dying really brought home to me the reality of it all. Of course I knew that about 50 million people died over the duration of the war (about half a million Brits), but I hadn't really thought too much about it now. The pilot of that German aircraft was potentially just one of those. I mean, 10 years ago 50 million was the population of UK. It's a huge number, so huge that at first thought it didn't sink in straight away.
Pete, I love your stories, and I have followed them all, and find them fascinating, but I have to say I am wondering why you are doing this. If you have time tell me please.
Peter! My grandpa used to play both those songs to me when I was a child, he used to tell me stories about his father (a World War I soldier) and it really used to fascinated me, you just brought the whole memory back, thank you very much, another wonderful video, I can't believe you aren't going to tell us if you got lucky or not!
Peter, i am a new viewer of your videos. i must say you remind me so much of my grandad, and remind me of a grandparent i never got to meet. I think your stories are brilliant, and I look forward to you next videos. Thanks Peter. Your a true Gentleman. the way it should be.
intro song reminds me of dr. strangelove. you have to of seen it, a popular kubrick film straight out of the late 50's

I could almost envision the battle between the 'Spitfire' and the German plane! Thank you for such an engaging story!

I'm sure it was a difficult time, but the world seems like it was more innocent then than now, or is it just me?

it must have been horrific to split from your family and go to unknown places...
