WHAT?!?! "not sitting far enough out on the side tubes"? Are you stupid? Yes the guide is caused the flip but not because they were not far enough on the tubes. If fact they are sitting too far out. Their weight needs to be on the inside not out side. The guide waited too late to set up the run, in giving commands, and not firm enough on his crew to continue his commands. Rafting in a paddleboat is not a spectator sport--they need to be working together. & thats from over 20yrs of guiding.
there's nothing "safe" about where you flipped. One dudes head nearly slammed into a rock.. permanent brain damage is no joke and head injuries happen all the time on rivers. Any guide who says "I did that on purpose" when flipping in a spot like that is a jackass covering up for the fact that he fucked up.
No river is completely safe, that's a given. Any guide who tells you a river is completely safe is a guide I would never want near me on the river. They should go get an office job!!
@TreeOgre6 If you have something intelligent to say, please say it. If you believe that a river can ever be 100% safe, then please feel free to let everyone know how that can be done, as you obviously know something that no one else on the planet does!
The guide flipped on purpose. He lifted his paddle out of the water and grabed the chicken strap before they hit the rock. I wouldnt have tried to flip there. Im not a guide on that river so I dont know the detailes of the rapid. Ol' Dude did eat some rock though.
As a guide I hated flipping the boat, because you always have those one or two people that can swim until they get into the water. And then you have to haul them into shore along with the boat. Just plain more work. Hit um even and hit um hard, kept me alive.
Watch 1:59-2:01!! Call me crazy, but I really don't think that face-planting on a large rock in big water is either fun or safe. Who in their right mind would do that on purpose and honestly feel good about it afterward?
It looks dangerous, but this is how it's supposed to be! :-) There are hardly ever any major accidents. And the guides like to flip the boats on purpose... just for the fun of it :-)
