He was challenged for teaching Kung Fu to non-Chinese and won, but the fight took a long darn time and I imagine looked a little like this fight. He then started to learn other arts and incorporate a lot of boxing and western fencing philosophy. This from best of my memory

Originally they were going to defend their houses/styles, but it turned into a big media frenzy that became more about the whole media machine and westernization, and the true story of how this all came to be got lost. That's why it looks more like a slapfest than a REAL king fu fight. Do you really think we fight in a boxing ring when our house was challenged? In public?
