r Dekker explained how "Israelites" was written. "It all happened so quickly. I didn't write that song sitting around a piano or playing a guitar. I was walking in the park, eating corn. I heard a couple arguing about money. She was saying she needed money and he was saying the work he was doing was not giving him enough. I relate to those things and began to sing a little song - 'You get up in the morning and you slaving for bread.' By the time I got home it was complete." copied from wiki
Excellent, as good as it gets. I remember first hearing this in 1969 after getting out of high school. I believe that it was the first real reggae song that I ever heard. Watch the 2004 Jools Holland show version on youtube for an updated version with horns, with the late Desmond singing as good as ever.
I can't figure the Israelites connection...could it be simply the suffering of the Jews as being similar to that of the suffering of the African Americans...makes sense to me...A bloody brilliant classic!!!
@furrybuddha He's one of the few so-called black ppl, who's parents remembered and taught him. The ancient israelites never dropped off the face of the earth. They are the so called blacks who where shipped all over and taken captive. He knew his history and identity in spite of the massive brain washing. And the truth is beginning to be revealed to all men. There are are so called blacks, but all are not israelites, check the video "Hebrew Israelite truth"
@furrybuddha - You may want to read up on the Khazars of Europe who converted to Judaism. It is these who lived in Germany, the Rhine, Poland, Russia etc... and eventually left and went to Israel in 1948. The Jews in Israel today are not and NEVER were native to that land. This also explains why they are all called Jews when the truth is that there are 12 tribes which form the nation of Israel.
@hooleyqueen He's Israelite. check out videos "Hebrew Israelite Truth and HEBREW ISRAELITES : THE SECRET TRUTH" Our history was washed out as slaves. Slave owners changed our names and called us every thing but who we are. They didn't allow us to worship our God Yah, but gave us Christianity taken from our very own book rewritten in English, with the name Greek replaced names even the name of our God removed and pictures of a Caucasian lord. And we were forbidden to learn to read.
@hooleyqueen - Um I think you need to check out Jamaican history. They are ALL slaves and were not native to the Island of Jamaica. They were brought from the land known falsely today as "Africa". The so called Jamaicans were descendants of the Israelites who fled towards Egypt after a series of invasions. They were gathered from those regions during the slavery trades.
I too, like MrTobytwirl thought that he was saying something about "breakfast". Good to finally see the lyrics after all these years. Wonder what the story behind the song is, that is, if he was actually an Isrealite himself. Any any rate it was a part of my late teen years and will therefore have good memories associated with it.
Incredible song. What great lyrics. Thanks for posting them along with the video. Been wondering for more than 40 years what - exactly - Desmond was singing!
Great song and good to see the lyrics posted. I never understtod them properly either. For a long time I thought it started with "get up in the morning, same thing for breakfast"!
