Overeem is not a wrestler. JDS is not a wrestler. If there is any discipline that is an absolute must have for MMA that is BJJ and only BJJ. Wrestling was just another phase of the progressing sport. The current phase is striking, everybody is striking now. Who knows what the next trend will be. Aikido maybe? Nobody knows.

Wrestling hasn't faded into the background, it's just like any other combative sport - it's practiced by a lot of MMA fighter cause they do all disciplines.

Of course in a combat sambo match the combat sambo guy would win - he has striking, all submissions, grappling, throws, etc. The sports sambo guy only has throws and joint locks. An MMA figther has - stand up, transitions and ground game. A boxer has only stand up. Sure he'll most likely lose, but his skills are a great base for MMA and with some training he can become a force 2 b reckon
Freddie Roach once said that James Toney has more raw talen than any of the other pro boxers he has trained and if he had Manny Paquiao's work ethic James would have been straight up unbeatable.

I really like James Toney but you guys need to be fucking honest with yourselves, he went into MMA and weighed to heavily on his boxing, his ground game was way underdeveloped. I think he probably could be a great MMA fighter but fighting as a whole involves more than just upper body striking. However on that note I think boxing is the most influential ma in mma competition, it does the most damage and opens the possibility for a knockout.

The only fat guys are in the heavyweight division, and the only one I can think of in the UFC is Roy Nelson, who has lost a couple fights in a row and is currently losing weight to make it to 205.
The current champs are Cain Velasquez, Jon Jones, Anderson Silva, GSP, Frankie Edgar, Jose Aldo, and Dominick Cruz.
None of them are fat and only 2 are white, and they're italian and french canadian.

@3eemy Idiot I've seen a fight between an Olympic boxer from my country and an Olympic wrestler and all it took was 1 shot. It depends on the fighter not on the style. Both have their strengths and weaknesses. Boxing was developed by the Spartans to fight in close quarter phalanx formations in a scenario where tying up with an armed opponent and going to the ground were to be avoided.

@3eemy Last but not least, wrestling is not the "ruling discipline". Anderson Silva is not a wrestler, yet he's the most dominant guy at the moment. Fedor is not a wrestler. Overeem is not a wrestler. JDS is not a wrestler. If there is any discipline that is an absolute must have for MMA that is BJJ and only BJJ. Wrestling was just another phase of the progressing sport. The current phase is striking, everybody is striking now. Who knows what the next trend will be. Aikido maybe? Nobody knows.

You are right, BJJ was the best in the beginning when nobody knew what the hell it was. In the beginning good strikers had no incentive to go into MMA because it paid a fraction of what they got in their sports. Now we see amazing strikers because it pays great. JDS had the chance to become a boxer for example.

First of all you mentioned Fedor, who practices sambo which has takedowns (many of which are similar to Greco-Roman or Olympic freestyle take downs). Second, many of the current champions were wrestlers or rely heavily on their wrestling to win fights: GSP, Edgar, Jones, Velasquez.
The idea that wrestling has somehow faded into the background is a complete misconception.

@LemonNation OK, now that you've pointed out GSP, Edgar, Jones and Velasquez - GSP only picked up wrestling after he got into MMA and he got really good at it, but he relies on his wrestling just as much as on his boxing. Edgar outboxed Penn. Nuff said. Velasquez puts as much attention in his boxing as he does in his wrestling. Wrestling hasn't faded into the background, it's just like any other combative sport - it's practiced by a lot of MMA fighter cause they do all disciplines.

He's not athletic as in jump like Michael Jordan and swim like Michael Phelps athletic, but he's fight-specific athletic - he makes people go down in one punch, has a hard chin, picked up Carwin (Felix Savon athletic). Of course in a combat sambo match the combat sambo guy would win - he has striking, all submissions, grappling, throws, etc. The sports sambo guy only has throws and joint locks. An MMA figther has - stand up, transitions and ground game. A boxer has only stand up. Sure he'll most likely lose, but his skills are a great base for MMA and with some training he can become a force 2 b reckon

I really like James Toney but you guys need to be fucking honest with yourselves, he went into MMA and weighed to heavily on his boxing, his ground game was way underdeveloped. I think he probably could be a great MMA fighter but fighting as a whole involves more than just upper body striking. However on that note I think boxing is the most influential ma in mma competition, it does the most damage and opens the possibility for a knockout.
