Cool amp and a nice enough guy. Sadly though, both Perry and Whitford have recieved full credit for several riffs and solos that they did actually write or play on the albums. Think Train Kept a Rollin, Adam's Apple, Last Child, etc... Yep, really.
Saw him last night at an Eric Johnson show at the Bitter End.. he was right in front of me on the way in with, I presume, his son. Bouncer didn't recognize him, lol
I like Brad and Joe. But clearly neither one played all the of solos as heard on earlier Aerosmith records. These cats simply do not possess the guitar mastery to pull off solos as heard on adam's apple, train kept a rolling and last child for example. Listen to this clip and listen to live, unedited performances. It's fairly obvious. Facts aside, the band is still entertaining.
@homeydontlie dude iv only played 3 years and i can play both of those songs with solos now creating the solo is one thing idk playin well hell yea they both do there own stuff
@KJGordon05 Mark Sampson has 6 accounts. That is fuuny and likely true. Anyway. Badcats sound great but so do many other over priced amps like these. Have you every seen someone actually use one of these amps anywhere, beside maybe 2 or 3 guitarists, out there? That's what I thought.
@manhattantguy Lol yea there aren't too many guys that use 'em at gigs. Most of the nicer amps end up in studios or in some rich guy's basement. If you're into the boutique amp scene, you should check out Lancaster Amps. Info is kinda hard to come across, but they sounds as good (if not better) than any BadCat, /13, 65 Amps, Dr. Z....... and they are actually reasonably priced!
I think that 30 is a lot of wattage but such an expensive amp should have at least 10-20 watts more (for headroom most). I guess the company knows best though, but that's just my opinion
@topografer Dude have you heard this amp? It can get incredibly loud...I own one, trust me 30 watts is almost too loud, even next to my 100 watt marshall head.
@spacemanvector32 no i haven't heard and propably you are right. But i am just saying. You can't disagree that some piece of equipment is incredibly expensive even if it's the best gear around (or one of the best anyway).
@topografer I certainly can't disagree this and others like it are often expensive to make a profit or afford mansions. But, what goes into an entirely hand wired amp? Attention to detail, time, best quality, often rare, expensive components. Tack on unusual unique features requiring more of all the above. Build one, ask yourself two months later when you realize you spent around 2000 dollars in parts and labor (at free to minimum wage considering the skill required). How much would you charge?
@spacemanvector32 anyway i think that your point of view is right. But there are many many people that see from my point of view and you should know it. Not many people can afford these things. At least i can't. I ain't saying that i couldn't gather the money for it. But if i did i certainly wouldn't give that ammount of money. I say that having a good gear myself. But not THAT good.
@topografer I not only know, but share "your point of view". Some folks are willing to pay more for a certain tone. Some seek out and are content with cheap gear and love the tone it produces, I am one of those people too. But regardless of the cost, the heart of this argument is VALUE. If something is the perfect tool for allowing me to express my music and it costs a lot or a few bucksI will try to find a way.
@spacemanvector32 satisfy some persons' needs. And then the "simple mortals" have to give a fortune (cause believe me in europe greece this one will cost many monthly salaries) to buy these things. The thing that i hate the most about this whole thing is that big names and big clients endorsers will never pay for thing we are willing to. By that fact i would rather search something 1500 euro maximum which can be perfect! And again i will have payed more than them. That's my complaint if you wish
@topografer I hear you, best tool in realizing your voice: ears (and in a hallmark card sense: heart). A cheap/expensive guitar sounds great/awful with a cheap/expensive amp: Gear=Tone 101. Fingers sound how they sound: unique. "Some person's needs" valid to an extent, but I don't care about their tone, I care about mine! If made to satisfy one who cares about tone at either a boutique OR mass produced toy factory, then maybe I care about it too! Peace/rock the crap out of Greece.
@spacemanvector32 by the way you speak i can see you are a logic man and i respect that. I get what you mean it's all about how the gear makes you feel/play/compose/perform etc and i agree. And offcourse it's a big truth (although a bit cliche) that tones comes from the player. Infact i agree in anything you say. I ain't a boutique gear hater and i would propably buy some if my pocket or ear allows me to. My whole point boutique amps for example are primarily built to...
@topografer Oh yeah, I almost forgot, the amp you built also has to look great, sound incredible, stand on it's own next to iconic out of production/new boutique amps, and not break, explode, cause personal injury after heavy road use by dumbass musicians (myself included) who might plug into the wrong jack. : ) Did your profit margin just go up? Not trying to be rude, just realistic here. You get what you pay for man.
@spacemanvector32 don't worry i don't feel that you are rude:P You say a million goods about this amp and i believe you. I realise how good a good piece of gear can be. But if want to be realistic then you would ask a realistic price too. Cause it's just that an amp. And i am sure i could buy all those features you said along with a killer tone at a much more reasonable price. The thing is, boutique costs that much ONLY because people buy it at that price. I ain't offending either
@topografer cause at least for my ear money above a certain pricerange doesn't buy tone. Because that's what it;s all about in the end, the tone. I hope i din't make you tired and sry for my average english. Greetings from Greece
@topografer You English is fine : ) I understand what you are saying. And I agree, more money does not always buy more tone...but sometimes...now and again...it does! And that is what I am saying. The polor opposite of a boutique snob is a "cheap snob" Someone that will dismiss ALL gear above a certain cost, because of the cost, is perhaps dismissing the very thing they may need, regardless of is they can afford it. Plug them in side by side, if it matters...it matters. Get me?
@topografer One last bit of blah blah blah, I have seen and experienced this many times: A player using a $300 amp, making it sing and sound great in thier style, never needing more. Another using the same rig, and nothing but garbage pours out. Flip that, the guy that can't get his $5000 amp to sound right for him, bashes it in reviews because he can get the sound HE likes out of a $200 dollar amp. Does this always mean the $5000 amp is overpriced junk? Are you seeing what I mean?
@topografer Respectfully, to your point, the ONLY reason is that people spend the money on boutique amps is the justification for their cost. This is my point, it is fundamentally misguided. By this logic, I could slap a bunch of cheap components that sound fairly good into a Matchless chassis and sell it for $3000. You believe this? I am NOT a boutique snob, I own and use $300 and $3000 gear side by side, because I love the tone and how it helps me make my brand of music.
I think brad is better than joe, but anyway, i think both are overlooked (yeah, even perry), the people, in general really don't know how good they are.
there's not a better combination, BW + JP = FIRE!!!
dont snap me for this, but is Brad playing Joe's Boneyard guitar?? it just looks a lot like it, but im not wearing my glasses at the moment so that could be why..... :)
Better than Perry?? Hmm... Personally I feel that the combination of the two makes for a great band. I was never knocked out by either one of them as individuals, but together when they lock in it's very cool. Perry seems to lift an awful lot from Beck, no offense but alot of his catalogue is very much like Beck. I have a chip on my shoulder for the band anyway, spent a lot of money in the 70's-80's just to see them show up wasted and playing like shit. Whitford has a great demeanor.
Some of his recorded stuff is really nice. Heard some outtakes of him from some old tracks and just was floored. When he noodles and gets in the pocket he IS devastating.
I have a JCM 800 and a Hot Cat. The Jcm Sounds fantastic if you can run them above 3 on the volume knob which for 95% of players is totally out of the question. The amp is very compessed otherwise and attenuators do chew up that magic tone the amps have. The Hot Cat can be played at reasonable levels and sounds amazing at all of them. Hence why the Hot Cat goes to most gigs with me. You can pick up a used Hot Cat for a little more than an original JCM.
It really depends on what you want to play. I have a Hot Cat 30R and after replacing the stock tubes can honestly say it is the best amp i have ever played/heard. The Hot Cat 15 is slightly less versitile but is still a straight foward awesome amplifier. Both amps have outstanding cleans and a fatastic, super versatile gain channel. Try one out for sure.
I run JJ/Tesla's in all my amps. For the Bad Cat the JJ's gave the tone a more 3-D aspect and enriched everything. The stock tubes tended to be a bit harsh and brittle at times.
They are all totally different amps. It depends on the sound you are looking for. The Bad Cat Black Cat kills the Matchless SC30 in terms of clarity, definition, and breakup. Just way better.
Brad's an amazing guitarist. He always seemed like the orphan of the band but he really holds it down, great solos too. I think he is naturally shy but adapted himself to the limelight nicely. Joe is just more of an extravert/showman I think. Brad is likely just as good of a player.
Actually, I am brad's son and I've played that specific amp multiple times. It sounds fucking amazing through the clean channel cranked, and he loves that amp. We play it all the time.
Most endorsers have to pay manufacturer's cost to get the amp with Bad Cat (That's what I did, even though they sent me a silver generation 1 sparkle hotcat30, and I ordered it in black...). I doubt Brad paid for his, they probably begged him to use it. He has used it live as well. Mine has developed a nasty buzz in the chassis somewhere, and therefore I no longer use it.
Brad's one of the most under rated players in rock. While some have called Joe Perry the Clint Eastwood (their words not mine) of rock and roll I think that Brad Whitford is easily the Buster Keaton of rock.
His playing is easily heard on Aerosmith albums because his playing is a lot more legato and better organized than Perry's.
Aerosmith wouldn't be the same without them. Just check out Night in the Ruts and Rock in a Hard Place for confirmation.
this is actually why im looking at this video, im trying to decide for myself who is better. whitford or perry. anymore advice on vid's or songs to check out to help me make my decision?
I have to admit that I'm also a bit torn too because the times I had seen Aerosmith with their "classic" line up with Whitford and Perry that Whitford took the majority of the leads. That said The Joe Perry Project was a pretty rocking band but the Derek St. Holmes deal was pretty sad.
Personally I think they need each other and serve as good foils for each other's playing styles - there's a real magic there.
I'll tell you why Brad likes it so well--they gave it to him for free. I would like one too. It sucks that he prefers to take a backseat to joe perry. He is a much much better player. This is more playing by Brad than you will hear on a dozen aerosmith albums.
they did a pretty lousey job recording this demo, put a mic on the amp, jeez. Bad Cat's are amazing amps,. so funny all he can say is " i like it cuz ..it works so well" it better damn work for $4000 !! I played the Cubii the other week and loved it. to bad it costs more than a car.
Actually the one he was playing was more like $2,849 which is still a little pricey but when your in aerosmith you tend to be able to afford any amp you want. Hey man if your a musician and its you passion its worth the money. If driving is what gets you up in the morning then yes spend the money on car stuff.
@Heathbmusic Wow... ok I get it man. I GET IT! But my point wasn't telling him exactly what the amps price was. It was justifying the amps price tag. Which no matter which way you cut it, is at least 2 grand RIGHT??? So my point STILL STANDS!!!
Nice amp but if you're going to make a promo video Bad Cat, why not have him playing a Strat and a Tele as well as the Paul. He even says it "shines better" with those guitars.
actually i edited the video. if i was there when the footage was recorded(and i wish i was)i def would have miced the amp right and miced his voice seperatly, but i was working with what i got. Honestly was lucky to get what i got during the making of Honkin' on Bobo.
on a side note.... i think the fact of whether he paid for it or not is irrelevant. He loves the amp. He loves and plays lots of amps, but if you think he made this video to get a free amp, your nutz :)
Cool amp and a nice enough guy. Sadly though, both Perry and Whitford have recieved full credit for several riffs and solos that they did actually write or play on the albums. Think Train Kept a Rollin, Adam's Apple, Last Child, etc... Yep, really.

@StraightOuttaEngland Yeah! Even if he and Perry had hired guns play some of the solos in the studio for them. Brad's a fairly down to earth cat.

It's obvious that you don't know shit about music,or great bands.
Just keep sucking on that glass dick little man,and the crack your smoking will take care of the rest.

Did he just wake up or what?

Drafter3 3 years ago
I have to admit that I'm also a bit torn too because the times I had seen Aerosmith with their "classic" line up with Whitford and Perry that Whitford took the majority of the leads. That said The Joe Perry Project was a pretty rocking band but the Derek St. Holmes deal was pretty sad.
Personally I think they need each other and serve as good foils for each other's playing styles - there's a real magic there.
eatsandsleeps 3 years ago 2
they're completely different, brads more of a technician(still an amazing guitarist, right up there with the best) while joe more of an improv man...
me1001 3 years ago
i agree they wouldn't be the same, but it was perry missing for those two...brad was still there for NITR

stop talking! play that bad cat!!! cazzo!!

Always love Brad's playing. Saw him with Whitford /St.Holmes in 80 or so around...

I played the Cubii the other week and loved it. to bad it costs more than a car.
jaikwillis 4 years ago
Actually the one he was playing was more like $2,849 which is still a little pricey but when your in aerosmith you tend to be able to afford any amp you want. Hey man if your a musician and its you passion its worth the money. If driving is what gets you up in the morning then yes spend the money on car stuff.
BrothuhV84 4 years ago
the one he was playing is 2499.00
Heathbmusic 2 years ago
Yeah depending on where you bought it but my point still stands.
BrothuhV84 2 years ago
@BrothuhV84 no. its 2499.00 the hot cat 30R is 2849.00 different amp with alot more features.
Heathbmusic 1 year ago
@Heathbmusic Wow... ok I get it man. I GET IT! But my point wasn't telling him exactly what the amps price was. It was justifying the amps price tag. Which no matter which way you cut it, is at least 2 grand RIGHT??? So my point STILL STANDS!!!
BrothuhV84 1 year ago
@BrothuhV84 Buy one used for around $1200 instead.

Still, an endorsement from one of the best rock guitarists, ever, is a big plus.
CACozmik 5 years ago
Nice amp but if you're going to make a promo video Bad Cat, why not have him playing a Strat and a Tele as well as the Paul. He even says it "shines better" with those guitars.

i didn't make this video; i only downloaded it

The comment was directed at the producer of the video.
funkyjones 5 years ago
actually i edited the video. if i was there when the footage was recorded(and i wish i was)i def would have miced the amp right and miced his voice seperatly, but i was working with what i got. Honestly was lucky to get what i got during the making of Honkin' on Bobo.
on a side note.... i think the fact of whether he paid for it or not is irrelevant. He loves the amp. He loves and plays lots of amps, but if you think he made this video to get a free amp, your nutz :)
