first off if you keep this tank in your house that is in a constant temp of 75, you dont need a heater, and you must be buying a cheap heater for it to crack that easily... unless you like to put cold water in your tank.

wow you don't need a heater for a betta! I just got mine and the water is only a bit cold and it dosen't have a top so all you have to do is leave it there for a while and then your betta will be fine it dosen't have to have a heater.

Bettas actually don't really need a heater. They can survive in room temperature bowls. It's not a huge deal.

Besides the fish, you aren't missing anything. Bettas can breath air so there's no need for a filter. Betta's don't need a heater either. I keep my tank without one and it'll be three years tomorrow :p And whats missing is the thing thats missing X]. I'm gonna put some vids of my betta soon too.

My betta was a christmas gift and I was giving a 1 and half gallon for him. I went to the store late got him a 5 gallon tank with a filter plants ect, of course I didn't get a heater. He seems fine and happy and the tank his covered in bubbles however I did buy a heater and I was wondering if I'm able to put it in with him in the water or do I need to take him out and then put the heater in? as well should I get a guard for the heater or do you think he will leave it alone and not burn himself?

lol. Ive never heard of fish dying from a water heater. It should be fine. In water, it cools down a bit, so it'll feel more comfortable to the betta rather then deadly. If you take the heater out while its still ON, it BURNS LIKE THE BEJESUS!

you do need a heater if the climate around you isn't constantly warm. If room temperature is no lower than 78, you can do without a heater. If a betta is kept in to cool water, it can become very suceptible to disease. Bettas like the warmth, so a heater set to 80-84F will be much better, preventing common parasites like Ich and bacterial/fungal infections.
