Such a underrated film. I feel like the Japan producers wanted this to be a "version 2.0" of the 1955 film. To me this is one the best Godzilla movies. No dumb friends or rival monsters. Godzilla vs man. They way it should of always been.
Hmm the blu-ray of 'Gamera 3' is a bit choppy. It seems like some lines were not translated so there are gaps of someone saying something in Japanese and no subtitle. Good thing I've watched the movie two or three times previously.
@kaemus1 I think Image Entertainment has the rights to the movie. But according to some sources over at Toho, Godzilla 1985 rights expired in 2010. So who knows who will take in those rights. Crossing my fingers for Media Blasters.
@Irrelevant402 I hate Classic Media honestly. Media Blasters, from their track record of great Toho released bluray and DVD's under their belt, should get the rights to Godzilla 1985. Look at their Destroy All Monsters release and tell me again if they should release Godzilla 1985 on blu ray and DVD. They would jam the disc with so many extras that Godzilla fans would think twice not to buy it!
@godzilla0083 Well the only release of Destroy I have right now is in fact from Media Blasters and it is in Japanese at least, and has a commentary and image galleries and trailers. I know there was a horrible dub and DVD from back in the early 2000s of Destroy. If it was from CM then they've gotten better with releasing 'Gojira', 'Mvs.G', 'Teror', 'Godzilla's Revenge' and the first two Ghidorah movies years ago. I am easy to please I admit. U.S. and JPN cuts and a commentary isal
@Irrelevant402 Yes CM has released good versions of Godzilla vs. Mothra, Terror of Mechagodzilla, Godzilla's Revenge, Ghidorah, and Monster Zero. But I'll let the Criterion Collection of Gojira tell everybody otherwise how a good Godzilla film should be released. But let's face the music people Media Blasters can only do Godzilla 1985 justice. Their release of Frankenstein Conquers The World, which includes both American and Japanese editions.
@godzilla0083 When did Criteron release Gojira? Is it the newest release that's on Blu-Ray now? I asked for that from my brother for Christmas so if it's an even more in depth relese I'm sure it will be excellent. Considering that 85/Return of Godzilla isn't on DVD along with Biollante I'll take nearly anything right now I admit. sad truth.
@Irrelevant402 Criterion will release Gojira along with the American Godzilla King of the Monsters movies on blu ray and DVD this coming January. The release will be even better than the garbage CM released a few years back. I understand how you will take anything right now. I'm same way. I buy Ultraman films bootleg on DVD cause apparently Tsuburaya is having a hard time releasing them in America.
@godzilla0083 A drag. I thought the CM releease was quiet good. Though I had never seen the original Gojira so I was eager to please. I think another excellent release was Shout Factory's Gamera and Vs. Barugon. Commentaries with loads of information and some extras. The real treats for me are commentaries and cleaned up videos. Barugon's sets were very impressive! Sadly I guess they ran out of money and they've done double billings but at least the lame Showa films are clean up.
@Irrelevant402 I have the Gamera showa films on DVD from Shout Factory. Very impressive DVD's. But my personal favorite is the Gamera 90's films on Bluray and DVD. Fantastic quality! I'm eager to buy the original Gojira on Bluray from Criterion Collection. That set has everything in it a Godzilla fan would want.
@godzilla0083 Just got the Blu Ray of the 90s Gamera trilogy though it might be a waste since they're kind of from the pre-blu ray days. Got them on DVD too As far as I care those, Barugon, and kinda the first Gamera just because it's the first, are the only ones that exist.
@Irrelevant402 To me those 90's Gamera films are just an upconversion of the original presentation. But knowing me I will still buy them. I'm a sucker for giant monsters.
@htsasele I'm glad that they involved the cold war into it, it gave it tension for the film, Imagine if they remade it in this age, what would it be like, I'll tell yah, too much CGI!!!
@thetruegladiator the one i am talking about is 1999 or 1998 i cant rememer the times but its an old one with the ferris blular dude in it. the one everyone is talking about is called GODZILLA 2012. idk why they will call it that but its gonna be americanized. its not made by TOHO and not the ppl who made Godzilla 1999 or 1998 watever year that one was made. but i heard this new one (Godzilla 2012) is supposed to be decent to American public. Japan says WTF, but you will have to be the judge
@htsasele there is an original version of this on DVD that i just so happen to have made by universe and its pretty easy to find. BTW way better than that butchered american version.
@htsasele Yes i agreey but you have to remember that godzilla (1954) was trying to say look at what the atomic bomb did and put about 20 min of godzilla in the hole movie but with this one they are showing off the wepons of japan and america.IT SHOULD'NT!!!!
This dubbed version was only available to the english speaking audience in Europe. But there was rumors that they were supposed to release this version in America instead of the Raymond Burr "1985" one.
Rumors? I think New World always planned to do their own version of the film, after picking up distribution rights in early 1985. There were never any plans to release the International version. Oddly enough, it's still the only English dub for a Godzilla film to have never been released in the U.S.
@TransatlanticFoe84 Well when they had the film they wanted to dub it over in english at first, but then they decided to go down the King of the Monsters way by inserting Raymond Burr into the mix and adding some more and cheaper American actors.
I remember when New World first acquired rights to the film, they wanted to turn it into a comedy, but were shot down when Raymond Burr felt it would be disrespectful to the character (and thank goodness for that). I'm sure you're right about New World simply wanting to dub the film over early on, but I think it would have ended up being released in and edited form, in one way or another. As many problems as the New World cut has, I think it actually turned out okay.
Well Godzilla 1985 (Return of) was aquired by Anchor Bay Entertainment but they won't release it due to number of sales it would generate, which would unfortunately by low due to interest in the movie. HBO owns Biollante so they won't release it anytime soon. Rebirth of Mothra trilogy is licensed by Sony but they only released two out of three movies. Third film was never released.
You say "no Raymond Burr" like it's a good thing.... what's your problem?
Sure his scenes in this and the original were "added in", but he's, like it or not, an integral part of how Godzilla was introduced to America....and I hear he has a pretty good reputation as an actor, too. : P
It's true Raymond Burr is a part of the Godzilla universe. But honestly the original versions of the Godzilla films he has been in are much more superior. It told the whole plot of the story in those two films. In Godzilla 1985 Raymond Burr's character told the military that Godzilla is looking for "something". Looking for something? I don't get it? What is Godzilla looking for?
The only American actor that was good was Nick Adams...period.
@postersurfman1 Ever since the mid-60s, Toho has had their films dubbed in Asia by various recording studios. These versions (sometimes called "International versions" by fans) are almost always unedited from the original Japanese versions. Usually, US studios would make their own dubs (as is the case with Godzilla 1985).
@CTHimes These voice actors sound better than the ones off my VHS version. Its probably impossible to get this version. They dont even have this movie in retail stores. I want the DVD version b/c of the better picture quality & sound, & the all the deleted scenes.
@postersurfman1 This version was never released in the US, but there's a UK tape of it out there. I have a DVD copy of that. I like the Godzilla 1985 dubbing, but the international dub here isn't bad (maybe the best of its kind, anyway).
i have the japanese version of this movie (together with 5 others) my brother says its lame because godzilla "is just a action figure filmed close" he really sucks sometimes XD a movie can still be good even though its a guy in a costume
Still this movie had a really good story to it and it really had in my opinion the best soundtrack to this movie right next to Akira Ifukube's Godzilla scores.
Actually I have all of the Gamera films and honestly the films are great but the 90's trilogy films and the new Gamera movie that was released a few years back are the best in my personal opinion. Watch them my friend.
Godzilla 2000 was cool but not as cool as Final Wars. That Godzilla film had almost everybody inside there. Best Godzilla film yet. Oh yeah and that Matthew Broderick Godzilla film was ASS!!
very true that american godzilla movie really sucked. i enjoyed seeing the real godzilla fry that knock-off in final wars, that proves he's the true king of the monsters!!!
