Because in the book Frollo has written in his cell the word ANÁΓKH, which is Greek and it means "fate, doom, necessity, compulsion, force, whether actual, moral, or religious". Underneath it he was written another word, that according to his brother Jehan means "impurity", but Jehan also thought that ANÁΓKH meant "fatality", so he might be wrong about the second word as well...

They age and gain an irresistible charm, very seductive and sophisticated. And another thing, they are very careful with their appearance (usually they are very elegant)
@Abhilynn it's not inexplicable, he has very nice features .There's a documentary/behind the scenes thing in 10 parts made when the musical was on and I'm telling you the guy is totally handsome (of course,despite that funny haircut).He looked extremely well around that period,I've also seen a random video from '96 where he had his regular hair..very,very hot + he has that voice from God so it's not inexplicable that his character is also sexy

The word ANARKIA is not written in Greek letters and does not exist in the Greek language, ancient or modern. Being a student of ancient Greek you should realize you can write Greek words using only the Greek alphabet. I don't need to use a dictionary to know what ΑΝΑΓΚΗ means; Greek is my mother tongue;)

i don't use on-line dictionaries, mine is the dictionary every high school student has in italy, well...almost every.
the dictionary gives also some examples from Xenophon or Thucidites, even Aristotle. ( i hope to have spelled their names correctely, i usually use the italian versions of the names)
I am rather curious; which dictionary did you use? If it has definitions for non-existant words maybe you should get another one. And don't trust on-line dictionaries - most of them are crap; they usually are not capable of correlating phonetic values between different alphabets

Frollo is losing his coolness, he is so jealous that he doesn't know what to do with himself, so he's pointing a finger and forbids (as if anyone would care what he says if Gringoire and Esmeralda were really in love with each other). He's so cute, I just want to hug him to bits.

It's a reference to the original story of the Hunchback of Notre Dame. Supposedly, it was carved on the stone where they found the two entertwining skeletons that were allegedly Quasimodo and Esmeralda.
What book have you been reading? The word "ANArKH" was carved on the walls of Frollo's secret cell in the tower of Notre Dame by Frollo himself during a talk with his brother. The bodies of Quasimodo and Esemralda were found in the cellar of Montfauçon after Frollo was dead and gone.
It wasn't the book I was referencing. A history professor of mine was talking about the premise under which the Hugo books were written, and I happened to remember it. It could be wrong anyways though; I wouldn't know.

Gringoire had found the Court of Miracles by following Esmeralda. Clopin was going to hang him for finding it, so Esmeralda married Gringoire to save him.
I think they could have added Jeahn Frollo to the plot you know for some comic releif or something and make him the one who discovers the word "Anarkia" or "D'NARKA"
like he does in the novel.

Fate in Greek is spelled/pronounced (with greek characters xD) "ananke". I don't get why they put "anarkia" instead of "ananke". "Anarkia" in greek is "lack of lead/law", much like anarchy in english.
In Victor Hugo's novell that word is "anarkia". It's in the first page of the novell. So it means anarchy. Hugo used it because where people believe in fate the fate rules them so there aren't any other laws and where isn't law there is anarchy. Victor Hugo was a poet, it seems. :)
Hey, AmiraPhoenix I think he might just be making his own story on how he got Her, the beautiful esmerelda, as hhis wife. Cause it just doesn't sound as impressive to say "Yeah, uh she married me to save me from hanging." Because Gringoire is a poet, so he likes the romanticism of things. Much like Hugo. Plus i think that is his character, a man trying to be who he Wants to be, instead of who he is. Which goes along with Frollo's character as well.
Well... The gypsi king wanted to hang him, but Esmeralda took him as a husband and saved him from the rope. And gypsi king said:"She is your wife, for the next 4 years."
Gringoire ventured by mistake into la cour des miracles, was caught by the gypsies and would have been hanged unless one of the gypsy women will accept him as her husband. The women were not thrilled to do it (they must have been blind) but then Esmeralda arrived and took pity on him. He was to marry her but not be her lover, that's why he's so defensive when Frollo asked him if he touched her :D.
I just love this little musical thing! Gringoire has this beautiful expretion in his face wehn he says "Come and have a look at this stone.." godt to love it! =D

excuse me...it's the first time I see the original french version of the musical, and i noticed they say the word carved is "ANARKIA". i study ancient Greek, and have read the book many times. i am sorry but the wrd should be ANArKH, which means Fate. Anarkia means "without a ruler" which in a sense is the opposite...
would anyone explain this to me please? for in any case Frollo says it means Fate, which would be a huge translation mistake actually...

btw it is true that ananke means firstly necessity, but also the meaning fate can be accepted in the greek idea of need, that is something that had to happen because decided by superior entities. it is anyway terrible that only two translations have been corrected...

ΑΝΑΓΚΗ in Greek (ancient and modern) means need/ necessity. ΑΝΑΡΧΙΑ (pronounced ANARCHIA, ch as in the English word "loch", stress on the i) means lack of rules/ principles. The word ANARKIA is not written in Greek letters and does not exist in the Greek language, ancient or modern. Being a student of ancient Greek you should realize you can write Greek words using only the Greek alphabet. I don't need to use a dictionary to know what ΑΝΑΓΚΗ means; Greek is my mother tongue;)

i'm sorry for the misspelling...in italian it is ANARCHIA, i just confused P and R...i'm sorry but my dictionary has the word ANAPXIA, giving the meaning it has also in contemporary languages.
i don't use on-line dictionaries, mine is the dictionary every high school student has in italy, well...almost every.
the dictionary gives also some examples from Xenophon or Thucidites, even Aristotle. ( i hope to have spelled their names correctely, i usually use the italian versions of the names)

I am rather curious; which dictionary did you use? If it has definitions for non-existant words maybe you should get another one. And don't trust on-line dictionaries - most of them are crap; they usually are not capable of correlating phonetic values between different alphabets

It was done intentionally; Gringoire knows the correct translation, so he's baiting Frollo. Frollo is trying to justify the word carved on the wall.

Actually, Frollo has no right to forbid Gringoire to touch Esmeralda since she is his fiancee, so I find it quite funny... Frollo holds back his desire for Esmeralda so poorly :D

Frollo is losing his coolness, he is so jealous that he doesn't know what to do with himself, so he's pointing a finger and forbids (as if anyone would care what he says if Gringoire and Esmeralda were really in love with each other). He's so cute, I just want to hug him to bits.

It's a reference to the original story of the Hunchback of Notre Dame. Supposedly, it was carved on the stone where they found the two entertwining skeletons that were allegedly Quasimodo and Esmeralda.

What book have you been reading? The word "ANArKH" was carved on the walls of Frollo's secret cell in the tower of Notre Dame by Frollo himself during a talk with his brother. The bodies of Quasimodo and Esemralda were found in the cellar of Montfauçon after Frollo was dead and gone.

Bon, c'est pour mettre des choses au clair. J'ai lu plusieurs commentaires qui m'ont fait rire. Voilà, 'ANÀTKH, c'est du latin, tandis que ANARKIA, c'est du grec (comme préçisé dans la vidéo). En fait, ça signifie le même mot: FATALITÉ. Juste que dans le roman, on en parlait en latin et que dans cette pière, l'on l'écrivait en grec, c'est tout, on n'y s'est pas trompé!

I think that this is an orrible mistake..ananke is greek and means fatality...anarkia doesn't means fatality..

Infatti in greco anarchia ( da ανά αρχή, ovvero mancanza di ordine) significa " mancanza di un capo o di leggi", a differenza di ananke che significa "necessità, destino, fatalità".
Sono definizioni che si possono riscontrare in qualunque dizionario di greco antico, e poi va bene l'errore, ma è ripetuto,voglio dire, anche altre versioni straniere del musical lo utilizzano (credo che gli unici a usare la giusta parola ANANKE siamo noi e i russi).

Dato che viene proiettata la parola "ANARKIA" sul telo, deve essere un errore dello stesso Plamondont, o di chi ha controllato la stesura finale. Magari è stato fatto apposta, per motivi di metrica musicale, non ne ho idea. Comunque sul fatto che sia corretto "ANANKE" e non "ANARKIA" non ci piove: "ANANKE" appare addirittura nelle avvertenze alla lettura di Notre-Dame, è la prima cosa che si legge quando si apre il libro!

Gringoire had found the Court of Miracles by following Esmeralda. Clopin was going to hang him for finding it, so Esmeralda married Gringoire to save him.

I think they could have added Jeahn Frollo to the plot you know for some comic releif or something and make him the one who discovers the word "Anarkia" or "D'NARKA"
like he does in the novel.

Hi! Well my knowlage of opera it´s not as good as I wanted. Especially about all those tecnical details. I like Verdi. La traviata and Rigoletto.
Also..I like Mozart Operas. Don Giovanni and the marriage of Figaro.
And some days ago, I saw here in youtube Die Walkure of Wagner and I like it. Though the plot itself is a little complicated.

Fate in Greek is spelled/pronounced (with greek characters xD) "ananke". I don't get why they put "anarkia" instead of "ananke". "Anarkia" in greek is "lack of lead/law", much like anarchy in english.
In the italian version it's "ananke" isn't it?

In Victor Hugo's novell that word is "anarkia". It's in the first page of the novell. So it means anarchy. Hugo used it because where people believe in fate the fate rules them so there aren't any other laws and where isn't law there is anarchy. Victor Hugo was a poet, it seems. :)

Hey, AmiraPhoenix I think he might just be making his own story on how he got Her, the beautiful esmerelda, as hhis wife. Cause it just doesn't sound as impressive to say "Yeah, uh she married me to save me from hanging." Because Gringoire is a poet, so he likes the romanticism of things. Much like Hugo. Plus i think that is his character, a man trying to be who he Wants to be, instead of who he is. Which goes along with Frollo's character as well.

Gringoire ventured by mistake into la cour des miracles, was caught by the gypsies and would have been hanged unless one of the gypsy women will accept him as her husband. The women were not thrilled to do it (they must have been blind) but then Esmeralda arrived and took pity on him. He was to marry her but not be her lover, that's why he's so defensive when Frollo asked him if he touched her :D.
