I recently reread LfA for the third time and every time I read it, I fall in love with it a little more. Looking for Alaska is to me like An Imperial Affliction is to Hazel Grace Lancaster.
The other day I was on Tumblr and I saw this photo of a page in a book. It was about this boy who wanted to lay down next to this girl and just sleep with her. In my head i heard "John Green" and i felt this overwhelming feeling that you had written it. I type in part of the quote into Google and your name is on every single link, and for a moment I thought, 'Wow everyone really is connected.'
I just bought Looking for Alaska today. I opened the book up and there was a piece of paper that had "Are you a nerdfighter? Visit the vlogbrothers on youtube to find out." handwritten on it. So cool!
Looking For Alaska has influenced a lot of my life since I've read it! And so have The Mountain Goats! Thanks, John for writing such amazingly awesome books and listening to such amazingly awesome music. XD
I only just bought my first John Green book today, it is Looking for Alaska. I'm amazing how addicting your writing style is John, And I would have bought A Fault in Our Stars, but this was the ONLY book of yours that I found in the book store... But it's amazing <3
THIS GUY was the author of the intelluctually stimulating, ever-so nostalgic, amazing, timeless classic novel of love, loss and tragedy, mixed with some quote, un-quote: "fucked up" times about growing up and finding your Great Perhaps?!?!? ONE OF THE FREAKING VLOGBROTHERS WROTE THIS STORY?! MY MIND = BLOWN TO PIECES AND INFINITY AND BEYOND. Awesome.
I bought my copy of Looking for Alaska in France and it didn't have the little golden award thing on it. . . so I wrote "Winner of the 2006 Michael L. Printz Award" on the cover with a sharpie. :)
I just finished Alaska about 20 minutes ago. I'm at a loss for words right now, but...i loved it, in short. thank you, john and sarah and everyone else who contributed.
I'm doing this book for an English research paper on challenged books. I've been wanting to read it for over a year now and I'm so happy I finally get to!
I just finished reading Looking for Alaska. In one go. I literally could not put it down. John Green, you are a genius. The world is a better place because of you and this book
@11magicmel11 hey i just finished it for the first time too!!! I was amazed by it. I really had no idea what it was really about until--well im not going to spoil it for those who havent read it--the after part. I think it is definitely a book that should be taught in school.
@harrySTINKINpotter Everyone is worse than Pizza. The vlog brothers new saying should be Don't Forget To Be Pizza because Pizza IS Awesome personified and I believe, with no research done into the subject, that the word Awesome was created specifically to describe pizza and has since been taken out of context. Such as the words Gay (which used to mean happy) or love (which used to mean the actual feeling of love and not the feeling of strong lust).
I've read Looking For Alaska at least nine times. No joke. I've been watching your videos for so long, and then I saw this, and I literally went: "OH MY GOD, YOU WROTE LOOKING FOR ALASKA????"
I just bought Looking For Alaska yesterday at a Barnes and Nobles near Atlanta, Georgia; it was the last copy. I am looking forward to reading it. I am also a writer and believe it will be very good inspiration. Here to you John for being inspirational. :D
I just finished Looking for Alaska like 30 minutes ago and I am in love with John Green's writing(this is my first time reading one of his books!) It is pretty darn awesome!!!
@uiruu I realized that minutes after posting that comment with a look of horror on my face thinking (Good god, you hear him say her name ALL THE TIME and yet you forget it now you IDIOT!).
Today I was looking at those facebook likes or whatever and there was one that said "That awkward moment when it turns out that Nemo and Waldo were on vacation together" and I wondered why they didn't include Alaska in that..
ok so I've been a nerdfighter for over 2 and a half years now but I haven't read Looking for Alaska yet (I know, I need to get better at life). I read Katherines a while ago and loved it so today I *finally* ordered LfA on amazon and as I'm scrolling down the page I take a quick glance at one of the official reviews and OMG BIGGEST SPOILER right in my face. I want to cry now because I feel like the whole experience has been stolen from me. spoilers suck. (still excited to read it though) :(
When I read Looking For Alaska, I spent a lot of time ranting about how I would've reacted differently if I was in the same situations, ranting about the characters' smoking/drinking and ranting about how the Library of Congress description from the copyright page spoiled the central plot twist of the book.
But no matter how much I ranted and raved, I still found myself finishing it in one night by staying up far, far too late. Like all of John's other books, I couldn't put it down.
Looking For Alaska is the best book in the entire world. It's better than Harry Potter. But only a teeny tiny bit.
John, thank you so much for writing that book. I have no idea where I would be without it. It was my saving grace in an extremely dark and lonely time in my life, it gave me a reason to laugh and allowed me to release the tears that I hadn't had the strength to shed, and it gave me hope for the world.
So I just re-watched this video...and now I wonder what Looking for Alaska was originally about if it wasn't about a boy who memorized the words of famous people...?
So, I've finally taken the time to pause the list of people and I saw Hank Williams... like, the country singer Hank Williams? I'm really curious where he came into play in the writing of LFA
I know I'm a bit behind, maybe, 90% of Nerdfighteria, but I just ordered ALL of your books off Amazon - along with Let it Snow and pre-ordered your new book...Maureen Johnson's books are next on my list - I miss reading for fun and judging from what the Nerdfighters have said, I won't be disappointed ^_^
John, I want you to know (even though you probably won't see this), that looking for Alaska is my favorite book in the history of books. I love your writing. You are brilliant and funny and witty and generally amazing. DTFBA, John.
I just read Looking For Alaska in a few days (which is very fast for me). Feeling all emotional and like I should talk to people about it! So I had to come here, until my friend reads it then we can discuss together.
I just read Looking for Alaska in less than two days! My fastest read yet! Great book. I'll be starting An Abundance of Katharine's anytime...probably later today, because I actually ENJOY summer reading for pleasure.
It's 12:13, I'm not supposed to be up yet I'm watching this on my iPod on a beanbag while I am wearing earbuds that aren't even connected to the fugging thing!
Hey John. I just want to say thank you. Why you ask? Well, I went for an audition for this huge project that the National Theatre company in my country do every year. I wasn't expecting much but when I got a letter saying I got a callback and it said I needed to prepare a monologue I started searching. I remembered the beautifully written piece at the end of "Looking For Alaska" and thought it was perfect. I used it and I got cast. You are an amazing writer and an inspiration. Thank you so much.
I like how Kurt Vonnegut wrote part of it. Do you like Cat's Cradle a lot? Have you read the Sirens of Titan, too? Also, "EVEN HANK GREEN" made me laugh. :)
john did you know that if you watch this video from behind the computer looking down on the screen (making a really weird angle) that parts of your face turn blue. it really adds to the effect of the video
Looking for Alaska is super super heartbreaking for me for one reason. I was picturing Alaska as this girl that I know. And thus sobbed like a baby halfway through the book.
I just finished Looking For Alaska. Literally, a minute before coming over and looking up this video. It was amazing, and you are amazing, and lots of other things are amzing too.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE tell us when the auditions are for this movie. Even though, yet again, it will be altered by Hollywood. Nerdfighters can be great actors too!
HOLY CRAP! Uhhm. I'm on a school bus right now, driving to McD's, so we can eat, change into our tux's/dresses and go to state and receive our superior rating for band and get the first sweepstakes award our school has gotten in years. And I'm screaming cuz I didn't know you were John friggin' Greene! I've read all 3 of your books. I am very much looking forward to a 4th. It was very exciting to find out you were not only very funny, but also one of my favorite authors. Thanks for being awesome.
John,I just read some reviews on walmart and I don't think the people are nerdfighters, but they said it made them thinking about your own life and what is going to happen next.
John, I think all of your books are wonderful. But Looking for Alaska is definitely my favorite. In An Abundance of Katherines I just find myself saying SUCK IT UP, COLIN. Paper Towns is my second favorite, I love that one too. But there's just something about LfA that is just so beautiful and meaningful to me. "I go to seek a Great Perhaps." I feel like we all feel that way sometimes, like there's something bigger out there. Also, I cry over this book every time I read it. DFTBA.
I really want to buy a copy of the looking for alaska audio book, but I live in norway and they don't sell it here, so I wanted to buy it off itunes so I could put it on my ipod, but they didn't have it.
Does anybody know where I can buy the audio book like a download kind of? Like not a cd?
Interestingly, a friend of mine who is unaware of Nerdfighteria and I were talking the other day. I think I mentioned the Great Perhaps (by way of my collab channel), and she says, "I just read this book... something about a girl named Alaska?"
I almost squeed in an unmanly fashion. Fortunately, I resisted the urge.
Thomas Edison's last words were: "It's very beautiful over there." I don't know where there is, but I believe it somewhere, and I hope it's beautiful.
Looking for Alaska is one of my very favorite books ever.
FRENCH THE LLAMA HE SAID WE WERE BETTER THAN PIZZA. :O haha on that note, I am constantly lending out my copy of LFA to my friends. So it's getting kind of beat up, but when you look at it, you can tell it's a good read because it has been read so many times:)
I love you John ♥ BTW, when I was reading Looking for Alaska, the first thing that truly caught my attention and made me unveil the mystery of the whole novel was the fact that you used such a close character (to me) as Simón Bolívar. I'm not a big fan of him, but it caught my attention. I just wonder why you picked him or in that manner, why did you picked Gabriel García Márquez. I feel I could talk to you for years actually, so I'll just leave this here hoping you'll someday answer :D
i can't read ur books because their my sister's and she won't even let me borrow them :( (although i did manage to steel Paper Towns long enoygh to read it) [no reply comments telling me to buy the booK!!!]
looking for Alaska is my favorite book in the world. it changed my life. i love that book and i love Alaska Young. shes like an idol. youre my favorite author and iv read all your books (except let it snow or w/e its called. i plan to read it soon) thank you so much for changing my life john with your books and you and Hank's videos have also changed me. im a true nerdfighter and i love it.
@rawrrar3 Well said. I literally just finished it and it is already one of my favourite books (though i might prefer paper towns, hard to say.) Bought Will Grayson Will Grayson yesterday
Paper towns is amazing! I just finished reading it and loved the comedy-intellectual-romantic-profound mix! I could even see traits of Hank ( the worlds largest balls fixation! Come on hank too obvious) and i wish the ending was happier
John, I finished reading Looking for Alaska tonight. ...I sobbed throughout the vast majority of it, as I did through just about all of your videos about Looking for Alaska. It was beautifully constructed, and your hurtful truth stung true throughout. The back of the book warned of tears, but I didn't know just how many I would cry--- A lot. i found myself crying with Miles, laughing with Miles, and wondering how much more I could possibly love a book... So, Thank you, John Green. Thank you.
I just read this book and cried it was awesome and i loved it :)

I was reading a book today, and I looked at the front inside cover, and saw 'If you like this book, check out Looking for Alaska by "John Green".
WOAH, WOAH, WOAH. From the vlog brothers?!
And sure enough.
I can't wait to read it. :D

Thank you.
