He could have went after Kid or Capone and he wouldn't have been in direct conflict with the protagonists. If he found the devil fruit he wanted first he wouldn't have been hunted by the Whitebeard pirates. and that wouldn't have caused the war of the strongest and thus he would have just waited till white beard passed away from his illness. He just jumps eagerly on opportunity.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. If he hadn't betrayed, he might have even fought alongside Whitebeard against the marines in some other conflict, perhaps he would have gunned for one of the Admirals or Sengoku instead.

I'd categorize him as amoral, not immoral. I also gave him respect points when the latest manga flashback showed him practically right behind Whitebeard alongside the other Captains when the Whitebeard Pirates kicked out the scum that was plaguing Fishman Island.

If someone sees what he's doing as evil, it doesn't matter to him because he's following his ambitions and to get to the top you can't follow such simple guidelines as good or evil. Teach showing cowardly and arrogant sides of himself like when he was fighting Whitebeard have nothing to do with his ideals, it's just bad traits we all have in common which makes Teach more human
