  • ONE OF THE BEST SINGERS OF ALL TIME PERIOD.

  • Brava Linda and a salute to the enduring lyric poetry of the Gershwins. I'm going into my studio now and learn to play it.

  • I place her in the class with the one and only Patsy Cline,,, they both have fantastic voices, and I love Linda's vocals on these old Gershwin Classics as well as cole porter, and Irving Berlin... She's out of sight.

  • eh. I don't "feel" the lyrics as much I do from other artists. Yet, Linda clobbers others within other styles...This particular version is totally forgettable.

  • Man I love her voice, her style. I'm with Overlooked65. She's just got it no matter what she sings!

  • She could sing mary had a little backwards and make it sound good

  • thanks! a few more standards brought to vibrant life by the incomparable Ronstadt ... I've Got A Crush On You (Gershwin, 1928) /watch?v=KelraygLn2g But Not For Me (Gershwin, 1930) /watch?v=zZEW6d3Ka4M I Get Along Without You Very Well (Carmichael, 1939) /watch?v=s4LOb0S5UZ8 Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered (Rodgers & Hart, 1940) /watch?v=-OV9zJdj408 Straighten Up And Fly Right (Cole & Mills, 1944) /watch?v=B7BgLNfs1_0 I Love You for Sentimental Reasons (Best, 1945) /watch?v=KGRWTxOhjEk
  • old fave of mine!

  • "Nice" is about a great a compliment as I can pay this version. Too nice. Is it possible for a song to be pretty but totally uninteresting? That is what this is. Uninteresting phrasing, no interesting chord changes. Totally undistinguished in any way. I love Linda, her voice is pristine, but I would choose lots of other versions of this song before I would choose this one.

  • Much better than Cher

  • Not tomention the lyricist.

  • ¡Una maravilla! Llevo muchos años escuchando esta versión. El arreglo de Nelson Riddle es magistral.

  • I know what you mean Lindawatcher. I think the reason Linda made herself unseeen is because she gained so much weight due to getting a terrible thyroid problem. This hapend to my mothe who got the same condition. Beautiful figure to big. Too many people critized her rather then to have found a away to understand she couldn't help the extra weight that she gained. So she was rarely seen as she must have felt embarrassed because of this; all because of the ignorance of others.

    So many miss her

  • What is wrong with the ears of the six that don't appreciate Linda's rendition of this classic?

  • I have now been listening to one Linda Ronstadt song video after another for hours now! I've got tears in my eyes over this one! There sure is not any type of music she couldn't sing!!~! I don't think there will ever be another born with a voice a gifted as hers! When the Lord made LInds He definitley threw away the mould!!!!!!!

I wish we could see her on TV again or somewhere out there!

  • @MsLindaKaren I know... very very sad to me that her carreer is grinding to a halt. I miss the years ago when I was young and you could turn on the radio and hear her songs... new! .... as well as see that beautifull face AND DELICIOUS LITTLE BODY (as eye candy for us men! ) God was she pretty! made me ache just to look at her hee hee Sigh.......

  • I enjoyed this album - and I have now found it on Youtube - Priceless! Linda Ronstadt was the BEST. PERIOD!

  • GREAT arrangement, and beautiful performance. Thanks for posting

  • Is this available on DVD please anyone?

  • @yuenkoi Damned right: It's on "What's New," 1990.

  • @yuenkoi I have it on a triple CD I bought in 1996. HAs all the nelson riddle songs. This is one of my favorite songs of all time and she does a classic job... try to get it. I saw her do this in Jones Beach LI on July 20, 1996.

  • Linda's interpretation of this classic as she is backed by the great Nelson Riddle orchestra merely proves that she is the greatest pop singer ever, with a unique combination of voice, phrasing, pitch, and passion unequaled for all-time. Her renditions of three particular songs -- Long Long Time, Blue Bayou and It Doesn't Matter Anymore -- separates her from all others. I saw her sing those three in person and, at age 71, I dial up YouTube to view her singing them every night of my life.

  • @RichHaney

You're a sentimental ol' sun of a gun! :) But I know what you mean!

    JW

  • Singing the music she was born to sing, and the lush Nelson Riddle orchestrations and arrangement are the perfect compliment to her voice. Only Lady Ella ever did this better.

  • I love Linda Ronstadt but nobody.....NOBODY......sang this song like Jean Louisa Kelly in the film Mr. Holland's Opus. Check it out on You Tube and compare.

  • @DEERMAN8 Oh yeah, check out Audra McDonald's version on Youtube - chills and tears....

  • Respond to this video... Check out Audra McDonald's version - chills and tears.....

  • I wanted to be her when I grew up!

  • Lost the note a couple of times at 1:50 & 2:24 but otherwise absolutely delightful.

  • Simply the very best female singer EVER ! A voice that angles fight over thats for sure. Linda please come back to Vancouver ,,real soon. We love you here.

  • Semprei admirarei Linda Ronstadt

  • Linda has a beautiful voice and always will. Nelson Riddle is one of the best conductors and did this album with Linda.

  • Linda has a beautiful voice and always will!

  • Pretty dress I love it. One of my favorite singers. Was Linda nice? Seems like she would be a sweet lady.

  • Holy C__p! Can this woman sing, or what!?

  • This song NEEDS to be sung slowly... that's why this version beats Ella's, hands down!!! :)

  • good (((((((((((((

  • I did this dress when I was Linda's wardrobe stylist.

  • This was on a great double album of classics Linda sang - my fav album

  • Minnie mouse sings the blues?

  • Lovin' this video! Linda Ronstadt rocks!

  • really love her interpretation of the song, voice control and expression.. awesome!..

  • Beautifully done, with NRO & Linda, coming together to make the kind of music we just don't hear anymore. As Mr Sinatra once said, " you can wait around & hope, but you'll not see the likes of this ever again." That, says it all. Wolfsky9

  • it is difficult without sounding shallow on paper that this is the most raw, most passionate, most savaage version of this song. Linda dear you are ok in my book.

  • "what's new", "lush life", and "for sentimental reasons" are three albums that are the modern benchmark for those who love jazz, standards, and big band music. linda and nelson's treatment, respect and love for these songs is evident from beginning to end. three very top notch cd's worthy of a home in anyone's collection.

  • Beautiful! She has more talent than people know.

  • Love Ronstadt; BUT Jean Louisa Kelly does this better

  • I suggest you to visit Radio MUSICA PARA MIMOS - ( search Musica para Mimos in Google)-. best romantic music of all the times in Internet....!!!

  • ES HERMOSO!!!

  • Great version, and she's sooooo cute to boot. I always loved LR, Pop star, singing classics, whatever, I love her.

  • NRO saves this performance IMO.

  • i love this song

  • she owns this song!!!

    sorry, Etta.

  • she owns this song!!!

  • I saw what I believe was the opening of her "What's New Tour" at Radio City Music Hall, NYC - what a fantastic show - she was beautiful, incredible voice and Nelson Riddle's orchestra just swelled the hall with sound - with her vocals soaring above

  • I saw this concert in michigan she was great and the band was great too.

  • Yes, amazing control. Linda Ronstadt is/was the best female singer of my generation. Teamed up with classic Gershwin, & the gifted arranger/conductor Nelson Riddle, and, well, it doesn't get any better than this. Her technique is absolutely perfect -- a fine model for any aspiring songstress. His arrangements orchestrated my life. Those who sought him out -- Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra & of course Linda Ronstadt -- all knew instinctively, or learned, that he was the best in the business.

  • Linda Ronstadt has got some pipes !! I remember some years ago I saw on TV Linda performing at a prison... She sang to the convicts, "You're no good, you're no good, you're no good, Baby, you're no good..." I was laughing my head off the whole time... The cons loved her, though... She is a treasure...

  • Top Tier. Linda is sensational. Nelson Riddle. Simply wow! How do human beings get to that level. Thanks so much for sharing this with us. Makes like so worth living.

  • Now if we could could only go back in time and get Linda and Keely Smith to do this

    song together with Nelson Riddle.

  • I just discovered Linda Rondstadt this year, and really appreciate her absolutely lovely pure voice, great phrasing and great vocal abilities! Linda in the 1980's joined forces with Nelson Riddle, arranger for many of Frank Sinatra's songs! Linda's performances on many of these standards is great! If you listen to the haunting ballad "What's New" you really get a sense of just how terrific a vocal interpreter of classic songs Linda Rondstadt truly is! In one word: Great!

  • One of the truly great voices in pop music. No doubt in my mind that she belongs up there with Peggy Lee, Barbara Streisand, Rosemary Clooney and all the other greats. A wonderful talent and, not for nothing, she's pretty easy on the eyes, too. Thanks for posting.

  • Great Lady.....What else can be said

  • She is Mexican..

  • @newyorkeastside About a 1/4 Mexican. Mostly German considering her father is German/Mexican & her mom is German/Dutch.

  • The recordings with the Riddle orchestra have always been among my favorites, but this video is something else! I'd never seen it. Appropriately dressed and coiffed (sp?), it evokes that great period of big bands with a "girl singer." Linda really "gets it."

    Thank you for sharing this.

  • None other like Linda, am so glad I got to see her in the 1970s.

I adore this look the most , the voice and face of an Angel.

  • LOVE this timeless video! Such TALENT!!! Hope to see her again sometime soon. One of the best renditions of this classic Gershwin tune on record. She moves me to tears - how about you? Linda, if you ever read this, remember - your fans STILL love you and always will! Be safe, be well, and be HAPPY just because you're YOU!

  • thanks !!!!

  • There is always a need to belong, and for me, I will surrender my heart and soul to the truly deserving one for he will be the SOMEONE TO WATCH OVER ME. :-)

  • This has always been one of my favorite songs. I bought this album, then CD. I have this concert on video tape. I guess I could make a homemade version on DVD. It's not available on DVD I don't think. I love Linda's version and I consider it one of the best. I also like Cheyenne Jackson's version on The Power of Two CD. He's gay and leaves the pronoun as he. He has a great voice and does an awesome job of this. I heard this also in remake of Fame. Classic song! Love the words and the tune.

  • she sang it kinda fast...lost the emotion in it

  • i have always liked this song. i like linda's version... once more with feelings..

  • We need more of this beauty love and pleasantry in our world today. Romance what a concept!

  • Wow! Music that makes sense! How beautiful.

  • How delightful real music a lost art. Thank God for recordings!

  • Awesome, the orchestra, the singer and the composer, outstanding.

  • Always loved this song ~*

  • Actually even invoking the forties is anachronistic.

The song dates from the Roaring Twenties. Strictly speaking, too many singers have done violence to the song. They can sometimes get away with it because the melodic line by George Gershwin is so resilient.

But basically the "improved" renditions are not this music lover's cup of tea.

I like Ronstadt's version though. I bought the album when it first came out many years ago.

  • <3 this album..grew up on her...and this LP. One of my most fav from Linda. We need more of this today.

  • incredible

  • i had this album and it was just a wonderful album

  • Phrasing unbelievable!

  • Instant classic!

  • Not as musical as Ella Fitzgerald's version.

  • My all-time favorite song, by my all-time favorite singer. It doesn't get any better!

  • This is Torch!

  • wow she rlly takes this song and makes it her own! i love it hahaha

  • Wow...... I think I actually stopped breathing...... I call myself a singer, but that feels very uncomfortable to say in the presence of this vid. Again.... Wow.

  • And this is for Katie.........

  • the standards are called the standards for a reason. lovely song , lovely singer ... i couldn't ask for anything more . this song will be around long after all of us are long gone .......... and i wouldn't have it any other way .

  • im so sorry but this sounds a bit plain to me...so regular...must say i like amy winehouse's version tons better!

  • @andreakep No need to feel sorry andreakep, that's your taste and you need not feel bad about stating your comment otherwise. This album I believe was meant to reflect the 40's as you can see by Ms. Ronstadt's apparel and of course the 40's 50's big band. I'm sure if she wanted to do something R&B, Mehicano, Chinese, whatever she could have. She is reflecting an era, not to your taste. Get it.

  • @andreakep One more thing Andrea, music is about personal appreciation not about who or what is better. The sooner you learn that the happier you will be with your music and those around you.

  • @andreakep I really loved this, but I'm so glad you mentioned Amy Winehouse. I haven't ever gone out of my way to hear her, I must admit, mostly because of the gossip about her. I'd assumed she was one of the shallow, uninteresting "screamers" her generation has turned out. I was pleasantly surprised.

  • @andreakep And just a side note to conmaesta.... Ella Fitzgerald sang this song, too.... in the 40's. Big bands weren't the ONLY music in that decade; there was also Jazz. Andrea, keep your mind open, and appreciate ALL kinds of music for what they offer. And don't worry about what others think of your opinion. If someone gets offended by your honesty, that's his or her own problem, not yours.

  • there isn't a better female singer on the planet.......

  • Our Favorite, The best slow dance My wife have ever danced too. Good add to You tube

  • Nice. :)

  • for my money she is the greatest living interpreter of any composers songs, mexican, american song book, rock, country, anything

  • Rock? Uh, no.

She's amazing with the American Song Book stuff though.

  • Perfect rendition! The Ella Fitzgerald suffers from not being..."feminine" enough (thought it's still not bad). The Allison Iraheta version is great as well; same vein as this Rondstadt version.

  • A flawless version of this song, right down to the wistful searching mood and dreamy optimism ... perfect!

  • DTDDS got it right folks ..the LP/CD is simply stunning

  • It doesn't matter, she is still classic!

  • This is really pleasant (except for the sound quality). She sings it beautifully but sadly not in the same league as Ella.

  • Etta James's version is a completely different take on the song. I would hardly call Ronstadt's version as not in the same league, especially considering Ronstadt is every bit and more in the same league as Etta James.

  • This is not representative, the YouTube posts are a train wreck. With Nelson Riddle and his orchestra, the STUDIO CD, "For Sentimental Reasons", is stunning. Both came out of retirement to do the arranging/recording.

This vid from the live tour doesn't hold a candle to it. I picked up the studio CD in the bargain bin for a few dollars.

If you like "Torch Song" standards, pick up the CD, you'll be pleasantly surprised. It's some of the best work from each.

  • Linda toured with the Nelson Riddle orchestra, they made a video of this tour which included songs from What's New and Lush Life, and I'd like to find it again.

  • she can sing any style perfectly. and, man, she's beautiful, even now that she's 60+. i love and respect this woman.

  • Bela época! Volte Linda.Diva é sempre Diva!

     Simply The best

  • She has a great voice. Nelson Riddle and his orchestra are awesome.

  • I love this song, I love Linda Ronstadt, I love Nelson Riddle and his orchestra, and I don't think it's possible to make this beautiful song anymore beautiful, uless she was singing it to me!!

  • Linda, your voice and beauty melt everyone's heart.

  • She is the standard bearer for this song in this generation.

    Linda is a Queen.

  • Born to sing! My My, what a tremendously moving piece of music, what a voice, so so strong! really she could have been opera level performer, had she so desired.

Love you always Linda, soooooooo easy on the EAR AND EYE!! Hits me all at once

  • magical/divine/best vocals/romantic sensual. these are only a few of the words that i can think of when listening to this song

  • i can die peacefully now..............

  • She was Diana Krall before there was Diana Krall....[minus the piano]

  • Yet another song she does better than anyone else.

  • its a fantasic version. amazing control

  • very heart moving rendition for sure,,,She has the most outstanding vocals of the era indeed!

  • Song used in the very good film, 'Fishbelly White.' . . . I think.

  • Also in Mr Holland's Opus.

  • OH and Fame too! ^^

  • This magical combination of the world's best arranger, an incomparable orchestra, and the finest female voice of the 20th century, is something that comes around but once in a lifetime.

  • agreed

  • Happy 63rd today, 7-14-09 Wed to the incomparable Linda Ronstadt ! Great songs on the 3 NRiddle CD's! Plus watch her live tunes from Frenesi - great too!

  • @bassandguitarguy

It's a year on - happy 64th Linda - we still need you, more than ever (thank you Sir Paul!)

In an interview with music industry executive Joe Smith (in his book Off The Record (1989), highly recommended (plenty of copies available through Amazon)) Linda, extremely self-critical, said that the three albums she did with Nelson, the last released posthumously, were those she was proudest of; from memory perhaps the only recordings she was truly proud of.

    (Continued)

  • @bassandguitarguy

    (Continued)

In Jerry Wexler's autobiography he spoke of his disappointment on finding Linda not wishing to release similar sessions he recorded with her; she felt her voice was too exposed, at least that was the reason she gave; I can't help but think to myself that it was her affinity with Nelson that swayed her; she obviously feels "safe" in his care.

With all respect Jerry (RIP); you were part of the journey to these three magnificent albums.

    (Continued)

  • @bassandguitarguy

    (Contnued)

And Jerry, it doesn't get any better for me than Aretha's "I Say A Little Prayer", and I know that Burt Bacharach thinks so too. And in a Q Magazine poll within the last ten years it was voted 2nd greatest single ever. Without you we wouldn't have the Queen of Soul. You win some, you lose some.

    RIP Jerry & Nelson.

    That's all folks!

  • @bassandguitarguy- linda ronstadt is really 63 yrs old? WOW I remember when she lost her roller skate key ! Remember that album? Album..lol...I am dating myself !

  • Absolutety beautiful.

  • Que increible voz de esta chica

  • I absolutely love this. She sings with such an old-world charm that is so rich and emotional, with a full orchestra to back her up too! I only with it was in better quality.

  • AWESOME! WHAT A VOICE!

    Seek and ye shall find!

  • Whoa! Sigh.

  • Sublime.

  • Absolutely super!!

  • Just wonderful.

  • My favorite Linda Ronstadt cut.

You don't often hear the full introduction to this song.

Marvelous performance by Ronstadt and Riddle.
