Then go on and lose that stupid fat (even if it's not much or it is much or whatever) and then if you want you can go on and have a really nice body by working out hard and get even healthier , because physical condition is very important and plays a significant role in many things (and many people really dont understand that but whatever).
such a complex topic & a good video about it. it's weird that sometimes i worry if i encourage my friends who want to lose weight (or whatever), my encouragement will somehow reinforce the negative image they have of their own beauty instead of making them feel loved and valued for the person they are in whatever shape they are. (how quickly i conflate the physical and the person him/herself.) i think so much is rooted in my own ideas of my appearance and how it relates to who i am as a person.
sometimes people (like my best friend in the world) NEED to lose weight/become healthier for health reasons, and even with him, i feel like i walk a fine line between encouraging him to adopt healthier habits/supporting the changes he wants to make and making him feel that at whatever size he is, he is valued, loved, worthy, etc. it's a very very tricky thing. as i said, good video on a complex topic.
Hey how did you shoot this video. It looks awesome and Im trying to get some videos I'm working on to look like this do you have any resources you could point me to? Thanks!
@DaquanH I use a very nice camera right now, but regardless doing any research into photography tips will help you tremendously when you look to shot video. Learning about lighting techniques and camera settings will boost the quality of your videos.
Additionally, much of the perceived quality of videos online is the quality of their sound. Investing in a great audio set up will go miles for you. The visuals might lag behind a bit, but you won't notice with crisp audio
...Or, it could be one of those things like, "don't become another one of those fake bimbos." In that sense I can see where people would say "you're beautiful as you are" or whatever. Because people have this anxiety over "natural beauty" going wrong (and I'm guilty of this myself) due to basically misguided peer pressure. (btw, the "bimbo" thing was an example, obviously this applies to men as well as women.)
But all that stuff aside, I totally get what you're saying here.
I think a lot of the reason people say that is out of fear...that someone, in an effort to make him/herself more "beautiful" (or whatever physical modification they view as an improvement), will actually do the opposite: Most obvious example is plastic surgery. A lot of people just may not support it because they don't think it's going to do anything, or if it does, it'll negatively affect their looks. So they'll advise a friend not to do it, or just not be supportive of it.
Sorry but that man is a sinner you can tell because of his earth ring and his satanic hole on his forehead. You all need to stop being ignorant and give your soul to Christianity or else you will goto hell forever that is a fact.
Lately I've noticed (and I'm pretty sure this is an American-specific culture thing) that anytime someone says they want to lose weight or get into shape, they hear an overwhelming response of "You're just fine! You don't need to change anything." I'm all for good body image, but it's almost to the point that it's considered bad to want to get in shape anymore. I know it didn't used to be like this back in the day. I just find it confusing. :)
When people say stuff like that, I always wonder how often it's based on feeling unhappy with their lifestyle, but not wanting to change, therefore finding it a comfort to say "you're fine the way you are" to another. I often have the goal of exercising more (I always seem to replace gym time with I-have-to-finish-this-book time), and people have said that to me, even though my goal isn't to lose weight. In any case, I think striving to do something healthy for yourself is a good resolution. :)
i dont understand y would anyone tellanother person not to work out out or eat healthy tomake them feel good, when by just doing those things ,without thinking that u have to lose weight ,u feel good.its just stupid, i encourage everyone to work out skinny guys fat guys old guys young guys its good for u

I'm Some one who really needs to lose weight I'm kind of sick of people telling me no you really don't need to lose weight for god sake I want to lose weight cause i hate the way it makes me feel which is my new years resolution
I've always been confused by the phrase "lose weight". What people really mean is they want their bodies to look better. In particular, men can *gain* weight and still look better. Muscle is heavier than fat.
And I support your decision to feel more comfortable in your body.
@mikemurko that was a bit of hyperbole. My joints have always hurt because of a preexisting condition coupled with sporting/work injuries, but the bit of extra weight I've put on isn't helping.
My bones themselves are fine (unless there's something I don't know about). Most of this discomfort stems from friction on my skin.
A lot of the time I thinks it's more about our wish for the people that we care about to feel happy, than the actual physical state that person is in. I watched my brother go from being slightly overweight to becoming a more ideal weight, but at the same time going from happy to angry and upset all the time. I can't help but think that if I had just told him that there was nothing wrong with him that maybe he wouldn't have tried so hard to change. I still agree with your point, and great video!
@spawnofjaws And hypothyroid made it almost impossible to lose) any way capping out at my highest weight two yrs ago made me realize I could never *look* the way I wanted without aid from plastic surgery, even with weight loss) but I could be healthy, and that's not some flimflam goal to be thinner or have a smaller number on my clothes . But I want to continue climbing mountains and swimming and dancing for a long time.
I totally get what you mean. For instance last year I was doing more exercise and so this year I'd like to be just generally more healthy. And I find the statement just "be more healthy" sorta gets rid of the touchiness of the subject, because the media, and whoever, tends to be more obsessed about weigh, dress size, numbers ect... and that's where there becomes that awkwardness.
Honestly, I feel like "you look fine the way you are" is a lot better than "its about time, I wasn't gonna say anything, but you probably should loose some weight." when I complain about the way I look, or I'm not completely covered over my midsection, my grandma will point out my muffin top.
I think the better response to this would be: "if you're doing this to get healthy go for it, but you don't look like you need to lose any weight. I hope you're doning this for yourself & no one else."
@lightanddarklove "its about time, I wasn't gonna say anything, but you probably should loose some weight." is such a horrible thing to say to someone.
I mean, the sentiment can be said in much better terms than that, and also, pointing out someone's "flaws" as you see them is a total dick move. It's very hurtful to the person, and does nothing to solve the "problem" that you apparently see. To me it feels a little like racism: judging someone for nothing more than their outward appearance.
@lightanddarklove I like your alternative response indeed! As I said, I think people should feel comfortable no matter who they are, other people should not dictate our life choices, we should be in control of that every step of the way [when feasible, my daughter will of course dictate some of my life choices, but only because I let her :)]
I was just talking about this with my mom. I recently said I wanted to loose weight and people responded like I was saying it for attention or so people could say "You look fine, what are you talking about?" but that's not it. I'm happy with my weight. There's parts of my body I want to get toned again because I've let those places go. It's not because I'm ashamed of myself. It's just something I want to do for myself, like dye my hair or paint my nails, or get a piercing.
@Itwasallwonderfulnot I have some garden plots in my backyard, but I've never been particularly good at gardening. I am in a CSA right now though, so we get all kinds of good organic veggies from a local farmer, and I get to support local agriculture with money!
I mostly like to grow herbs in my gardens, I LOVE fresh herbs more than anything.
That's awesome. I'm pretty new to the whole gardening thing. This spring is my first garden I have two plots in my yard. I am also doing some barrels and things like that. I have a gardening buddy too, so that helps. He told me about "lasagna" gardening, which builds good soil and stuff and is an easy way to garden.
Have you ever seen Mother Earth News magazine? Tons of stuff in there.
My resolutions are to be healthier with my sleeping pattern and exersize habits. I think the main thing about our society is that when somebody says that they want to eat healthier or excersize, they automatically assume that said person is struggling with self-esteem. Those things are healthy for anybody, skinny or large!
Over the summer, I took a taekwondo class that made me fit and gave me the most sexy legs I could have ever hoped for. Then I started school again, got swamped, lost the muscle I gained and got squishy. At no point did I actually get fatter or skinnier - my body weight fluctuated by a mere five pounds.
BUT, I feel squishy and I don't like it. So THAT is why I want to work out. Not because of weight, but because I want those sexy legs back! :P
You should let us see your tattoos, and possibly tell us the meaning for them. I've seen one on your arm and I see a chest piece hiding under your shirt.
@LpKillsU the "chest piece" is actually not what you think it is. There is a video (very old mind you) on my channel called "Nerd Tattoos" that describes what they are. I should make a video about my ink someday again though. I've been itching to get a new piece recently, but can't decide on the subject of it...
@LpKillsU I have a metroid tattooed on my left forearm, a "Share the Road" road sign on my left leg, and a 3/4 sleeve (unfinished) on my right arm, it will eventually be an abstract tree.
I have myself somewhat been a perpetrator of this kind of behavior. The reason is mainly because the friends of mine who are skinny and want to lose weight don't really seem to have a concrete, serious reason to do so other than 'I used to weigh that much'. I find this extremely frustrating because my goal to lose weight effects my career choices. I'm not saying their reasons aren't valid, but they should appreciate that they have what others want... But then, maybe that's selfish of me?
Measurable goals with milestones instead of typical "resolutions" worked last year. I actually achieved all of them. I took my time to plan them last year and I'm going to do the same again this year so I'll decide by February.
One of my goals last year was to get to a certain level of fitness and a healthier diet just came with that. Problem now is that I lost more weight than I wanted to. In fact I want to gain weight. So one goal might be to gain weight, I'm aiming for preferably muscle mass.
Cheers! Interesting! I don't have a NYE resolution really... just to try and continue to be productive, maybe find myself in a career, music or otherwise. That's about it. :)
They think I'm being ridiculous because I'm super skinny. The thing is, I went to Hawaii and they haven't seen me in a year, so they have no idea what I look like now. And even if they did, if t hey say I look fine the way I am, I don't care what they think because they aren't the ones I'm trying to date or fuck.. (in most cases) I only care what they think about my personality, not my looks.
I've always been on the recieving end of this...it's a bother and a bizarre situation to be put in. I'm very skinny naturally. I have a very high metabolism, so I've always been skinny regardless of how unhealthy I've been. Whenever I asked friends to work out with me or for support with me getting more exercise, the answer always is "OMG, you're so skinny you don't need to work out." Its annoying because 1) yes I actually do, and 2) hearing that is just plain discouraging. Skinny =/= fit.
@halamaker You and me are exactly alike. It was really rare that I could find anyone to go to the gym with me.
the interesting thing that happens as you age and you metabolism slows is that people STILL think that shit about you, even if you can SEE the changes in your body. they still remember you as a skinny person, so they still treat you like one, even if you're really not anymore.
@halamaker Theres more to working out then just weight loss, but most people just don't get, ya know? Building nice lean healthy muscles (not bodybuilding crap). And it just feels good, to run for a bit on the treadmill while blasting out Matt and Kim. It's good to get the blood pumping. I don't know why I'm typing because you probably already know this. But hey, this is Youtube, Nobody Cares.
I am glad that you think you need to lose weight. Everyone should try to do make there lives more healthy. But please don't be a person that binge eats or does purges. It can really mess you up. And I feel so bad for asking this but your head looks really cool. How did it get that way?
First: Okay, under every single video s few people ask what happend to his forehead. He answered a lot of questions in the comments, so if he would want to tell us,he would have already. I mean, okay, i might be interesting, but he will tell, if he wants to. Second:I really think your view is exactly right! My mom always tells me that i lost wanight, i think just to make me feel better, and that makes me worry that she assumes its always a complimet. Its not, only if i feel uncomfortable.Thank you!
@Paulinemoke I have answered that question a million times, I'm not ashamed. What I'd rather people did was go to my channel and investigate for themselves, I made an entire video series about the scar what you can easily find if you search for "forehead" or "scar" on my channel.
It's weird to me how "You've lost weight" is a common compliment at large gatherings of people who haven't seen each other for awhile. Unless you know someone was endeavoring to do so, why bring it up?
@themefund One time I had a beard. And then I shaved. And then I visited a friend, who said, "Have you lost weight?" People are notoriously bad at paying attention. He knew something had changed. It registered simply as, "Markman looks different." He ventured his best hypothesis.
By the way, I love your message here. And you are the wisest human being I know that is not a New York Times bestselling author of young adult fiction.
OK, before you reshape your thighs, could I send you a pair of corduroy pants to walk around in? You could document the change with before-and-after sound recordings of the swish-swish followed by the silence.
I have trouble with that kind of comment an awful lot, I know I need to loose weight but people constantly tell me I'm all ok. My new years resolution is to accept what I cannot change and to endeavor with the things I can, and my weight is one of those things.
@karih123 right, that's why I'm not exactly worried about the numerical weight-loss aspect of my health. I know that muscle cells weigh more than fat cells but are more compact, which is the goal ultimately! Just be more compact again.
You remind me of Dan Brown (Pogobat, vlogger, not writer). I don't know what it is, the accent, the face or the vlogging style? But it's good. Nice video, Subbed.
My NYR is to work harder on my photography and really go somewhere with it. I recently moved to a new city and my competition out here is immense and somewhat intimidating at times... but that's OK. There's really no reason why my talents should go to waste!! A sad day when you're not waking up and thinking about and living out your passions. :)
@IsraGunner I think you're right about the new year's resolutions. I've never really put any stock into them in years past. This year felt different because I was growing stagnant in my life and was already beginning to formulate these goals before new year's eve hit. Basically it was about the timing just being perfect.
I think the biggest problem is learning to tell people who want to hear the truth (that they need to lose a few pounds) from those who don't. I guess the safer way is just to lie and that's what most people get used to.
By the way, good video, looking forward to seeing more of you this year!
@Zombiekeks exactly, and it extends to areas outside of weight as well. People who want to be artists, or want to make more money, or whatever they want to do need encouragement, but if a person is comfortable with who and where they are in life we shouldn't feel free to push people around.
@themefund I agree. All in all, it's about learning when criticism is appropriate or not. Commenting on your freinds' look or behavior out of the nothing is wrong in most cases, but it's something different when they actually ask for a honest opionion
I thought this was going to be an argument about the subjectivity of beautiful.
ex. "Chubby chasers".
though I see your point as well we should always encourage people to "better" themselves if by better we mean within limitations what they want to improve in themselves.
Lets not encourage hitler to be a better dictator, but lets encourage Paris Hilton to.. I don't know get a clue about anything.
@ronocko I think it's a tough line to tread, encouraging people to "better" themselves if they do not wish to "better" themselves will just come off as judgmental asshattery. However, if we don't encourage people who want it we do them another disservice.
I guess it just takes actually KNOWING what someone desires and helping them achieve that.
@themefund Ofcourse you'd never have to push someone into something they don't want to do, I think it's best just to let people know whatever they choose to do you will be supportive and if they do want to know your opinion on the situation then you're willing to give them but on the condition it won't be a watered down answer it will be the truth (in so much as your opinion of what the truth is.)
I think I'm gonna like this every Wednesday video thing you've started here. Also, I say go for it on the de-volumizing stuff you're planning. You wanna get healthier, fitter, stronger, or in your mind just better all around, do it to it, and more power to you! Good luck!
Although i guess you must have lost all the useless fat by now!.
But if not go on and that if it will make you feel better

BUT, I feel squishy and I don't like it. So THAT is why I want to work out. Not because of weight, but because I want those sexy legs back! :P

You should let us see your tattoos, and possibly tell us the meaning for them. I've seen one on your arm and I see a chest piece hiding under your shirt.
LpKillsU 1 month ago
@LpKillsU the "chest piece" is actually not what you think it is. There is a video (very old mind you) on my channel called "Nerd Tattoos" that describes what they are. I should make a video about my ink someday again though. I've been itching to get a new piece recently, but can't decide on the subject of it...
themefund 1 month ago
@themefund Okay I found it lol. I guess I shouldn't have assumed what it was. But what about your other(s)?
LpKillsU 1 month ago

So one goal might be to gain weight, I'm aiming for preferably muscle mass.
jpoloh 1 month ago
Cheers! Interesting! I don't have a NYE resolution really... just to try and continue to be productive, maybe find myself in a career, music or otherwise. That's about it. :)

I got the same shit from my friends.
JesterAzazel 1 month ago
I've always been on the recieving end of this...it's a bother and a bizarre situation to be put in. I'm very skinny naturally. I have a very high metabolism, so I've always been skinny regardless of how unhealthy I've been. Whenever I asked friends to work out with me or for support with me getting more exercise, the answer always is "OMG, you're so skinny you don't need to work out." Its annoying because 1) yes I actually do, and 2) hearing that is just plain discouraging. Skinny =/= fit.
halamaker 1 month ago 5
@halamaker You and me are exactly alike. It was really rare that I could find anyone to go to the gym with me.
the interesting thing that happens as you age and you metabolism slows is that people STILL think that shit about you, even if you can SEE the changes in your body. they still remember you as a skinny person, so they still treat you like one, even if you're really not anymore.
themefund 1 month ago

Paulinemoke 1 month ago
@Paulinemoke I have answered that question a million times, I'm not ashamed. What I'd rather people did was go to my channel and investigate for themselves, I made an entire video series about the scar what you can easily find if you search for "forehead" or "scar" on my channel.
It's weird to me how "You've lost weight" is a common compliment at large gatherings of people who haven't seen each other for awhile. Unless you know someone was endeavoring to do so, why bring it up?
themefund 1 month ago
@themefund One time I had a beard. And then I shaved. And then I visited a friend, who said, "Have you lost weight?" People are notoriously bad at paying attention. He knew something had changed. It registered simply as, "Markman looks different." He ventured his best hypothesis.

I have trouble with that kind of comment an awful lot, I know I need to loose weight but people constantly tell me I'm all ok. My new years resolution is to accept what I cannot change and to endeavor with the things I can, and my weight is one of those things.

You could loose some weight, but then you'd still gain some weight from making more muscles over the year.
karih123 1 month ago
@karih123 right, that's why I'm not exactly worried about the numerical weight-loss aspect of my health. I know that muscle cells weigh more than fat cells but are more compact, which is the goal ultimately! Just be more compact again.

butonlyifitscool 1 month ago
I think that new year's resolutions are excuses for people from making goals on a daily basis.
However, I found your video highly inspirational and logically sound. I wish you the best of luck in your endeavors.
IsraGunner 1 month ago
@IsraGunner I think you're right about the new year's resolutions. I've never really put any stock into them in years past. This year felt different because I was growing stagnant in my life and was already beginning to formulate these goals before new year's eve hit. Basically it was about the timing just being perfect.
themefund 1 month ago
I think the biggest problem is learning to tell people who want to hear the truth (that they need to lose a few pounds) from those who don't. I guess the safer way is just to lie and that's what most people get used to.
By the way, good video, looking forward to seeing more of you this year!
Zombiekeks 1 month ago
@Zombiekeks exactly, and it extends to areas outside of weight as well. People who want to be artists, or want to make more money, or whatever they want to do need encouragement, but if a person is comfortable with who and where they are in life we shouldn't feel free to push people around.
themefund 1 month ago
@themefund I agree. All in all, it's about learning when criticism is appropriate or not. Commenting on your freinds' look or behavior out of the nothing is wrong in most cases, but it's something different when they actually ask for a honest opionion
Zombiekeks 1 month ago
You're realy right about whole "you don't look.." or "you don't need to change"-thing

I don't know get a clue about anything.
ronocko 1 month ago
@ronocko I think it's a tough line to tread, encouraging people to "better" themselves if they do not wish to "better" themselves will just come off as judgmental asshattery. However, if we don't encourage people who want it we do them another disservice.
I guess it just takes actually KNOWING what someone desires and helping them achieve that.
themefund 1 month ago
@themefund Ofcourse you'd never have to push someone into something they don't want to do, I think it's best just to let people know whatever they choose to do you will be supportive and if they do want to know your opinion on the situation then you're willing to give them but on the condition it won't be a watered down answer it will be the truth (in so much as your opinion of what the truth is.)
