Wow, what time/day were you here for it to be so quiet? I wouldn't say it's a happening place but there's definitely stuff going on and the student population gives it a lot of charm. Shame you missed some of the more scenic areas like the old houses and the view over the Rhine and filmed a grotty pond instead.
By the way, there's a bus 88 from the south side of the station, goes about every 10 minutes.
