Is this very spicy? I want to make this but my family doesn't like very spicy dishes, so I wonder if I should just use a very little bit of chili powder and peppers? I do want it to be at least a little spicy if it's supposed to be that way.
The best part about Indian cuisine is that you can use many different spices but not make the dish spicy (hot). Just use less red chili powder or green chilies.
Yes, you can substitute it with Palak (Spinach) but you will have to use a lot more in quantity. Methi has a very strong flavor so we use very little.

heyy ladies!! greens are my fav. and that too methi..yumm.. i always tot to make a diff recepie of methi.. n this is a good one will surely try it out...!! thanks!!
Wow this looks good will try. i'm one of the strange ppl that enjoys the bitter taste of methi and karela etc. I nearly always replace all palak dishes with methi. But I can see that in dishes like this it might be an idea to get lessen the bitterness. but seeing as its me i'll skip the salting bit and try it that way.
You can find saffron at most Indian grocery stores or even some whole foods type stores. It is a bit expensive (the most expensive spice in the world), but just a little pinch goes a long way!
Where do I get fresh/dry fenugreek leaves (methi)? Are they available in the Indian grocery stores in the US? Can I use fenugreek powder instead? Thanks.
You can get fresh or dry fenugreek leaves at most Indian grocery stores. The dry one is called "Kasuri Methi". The fresh ones are also available in some of the health food or farmer's market type stores. Using fenugreek powder will not give you the proper effect of this recipe.
Nice recipe...will definately try...but I am just wondering if I will loose the wonderfull nutrients from that methi when i take out the water that way !
They have always said "to taste" when it comes to fresh or dry hot items. There's no reason why you couldn't lessen the amount of heat in this recipe.

Hi, looks very good. I'am just learning and am wondering how much of the frozen Methi I should use. I buy 12 oz packages. Thank you so much.
amydeshpande 1 year ago
@amydeshpande
You can use about 1/2 package. Frozen methi is really compacted in the package so you get a lot more.

Yes, unfortunately we do loose some nutrients. If you can handle the flavor and the bitterness then by all means don't salt it:)

There are a lot of good brands of Basmati rice. Look for a brand that is from Dehradun, they tend to be a notch better:)

Is that the same as kasuri methi? That's what I have and it does look like dried methi leaves...
myuzikluvr 3 years ago
What we have used in this recipe is fresh fenugreek leaves but alternatively you can use Dried Fenugreek leaves.
There are different names and spellings to the same thing:
Kasturi Methi
Kasuri Methi
Kasoori Methi
Dried Fenugreek Leaves

Food should always be done to your personal tastes. The result won't be as hot, but your stomach will like you.
