This show is a money making mass entertainement show, not a talent show. I wouldn't be surprised if that comment from Dannii was already prepared. This show is about controversy and money making. Everyone was talking about that comment from her so it just got the show more views!
I don't think there would be any problem or controversy at all. But since people mistook what she said (obviously not knowing of her history of being a big gay rights activist) and Danyl had an odd response (he was so touched people liked his song he was crying, and a bit surprised she brought it up) or had Simon not been so angry and overprotective, people would have been fine with it and there would have been no trouble at all.

That was ragingly, ragingly, ragingly inappropriate for Dannii to say. I'm sure she's not homophobic but she came across like it was her first time speaking on live television. I was honestly shocked and embarrassed for her that she would make such a comment! It had NOTHING to do with his musical performance. I'm sure she didn't mean it in a negative way at all, but it was extraordinarily unprofessional across the board.
