I have Tennant's and I just got Matt Smith's, but I wanna get the Tom Baker one since I'm gonna attempt to make a Tom Baker Cosplay (naturally curly hair = semi easier ). excellent review and I agree, I prefer the plain compared to the Pertwee screwdriver. It's between this, or the Master's Laser screwdriver for my next order :D
Your comments regarding a Paul McGann screwdriver are interesting. As I recall from the 96 movie, his version was similar to the Baker version, BUT, the big difference was that McGann's was telescopic (see when he's fine tuning the Tardis console right at the end of the film).
YOU'RE WRONG! That is originally a Tom Baker sound. Go watch "The Ark In Space" part 1. The sound the sonic makes when he reconnects the wires is the first sound on the screwdriver. ~my geek showing~
@MatthewSychantha Sorry to disagree but the sound IS wrong. Toms screwdriver never made that sound. If you buy one of the old BBC Radiophonic workshops CD's it contains all the sonic screwdriver sound effects that were used on the show.
I thought you had the replica? The wasted money on this inaccurate, chunky toy could have gone towards one of this years comic con exclusives! Never mind!
yes, but considering the fact that they did a totally original paint job on the parts of the pertwee prop that did not appear on screen, a second doctor sonic could damn near be a totally original design
It would be interesting to see them release a "Romana" version of the screwdriver. In one of late 70s episodes Lalla Ward's Romana had made her own screwdriver, an improved version of the doctor's. Tom Baker tried to swap it for his but to no avail. I think it was a slightly smaller version of the 4th doctor's, but it was only on screen for less than 30 secs.
Nice review, I had hoped they'd bring out the Tom Baker version of the Sonic Screwdriver though it’s a shame they still use the modern sound effects. It might be because the original sound was so high pitched they thought it might damage the hearing of some children or something like that.
Also have to agree that they could’ve shot themselves in the foot bringing the Tom Baker one out next, but I don’t know if it will stop them making the other versions.
@captaingerbil11 It actually changes depending in the job it's doing. Pertwee would generally hold it with the bullet facing him (but not always), while Tom would generally point the bullet and the control panel etc. However the back of it was actually a magnet so screws could be pulled out of things.
@batmanmarch Yup. You're right there. You can see the magnet portion in use in either Android Invasion or Terror of the Zygons when the Doctor takes up the bolts on a floor plate so he and Sarah can get at an electrical cable and escape their cell.
Just ordering mine :) This has come as a real shock, I didn't know this was coming out yet, I thought it was set for a summer release!
Out of all the sonics so far, I'd say the Smith is the best. It is actually very accurate to the prop, all the dimensions are very impressive for a toy, and the sounds are quite nice too.
The Tennant was pretty good too, the scale and ridges were a disappointement, but the head of the screwdriver inparticular was very well done. :)
Brilliant job mate:) I can't believe they're still using the Tennant sounds. Also, on sadder news, Tom Baker's most famous companion, Sarah Jane, has died today:(
@doctorwhocollector1 The TTom baker one, I have the pertwee one and the tom baker one looks way better, and has more uses (over a wider range of doctors)
OMG beautiful card it comes with. I thought you said Time War boxset but yes I may buy that one (Time warrior set) What would you say was better Sontaran Experiment or Time warrior with Sontarans figures
@grant24678 I'm saying this just from the Sontaran point of view, if you want a more classic Sontaran I'd go for the warrior set, due to the fact it has the three finger'd hand.
I'd love to see a second Doctor screwdriver, but that is really just a silver rod and a light at the end of it. Ha - a bit like a laser pen. It's probably what it was.
A great review once again. I have to wait until June to get this as that's when my birthday it. I was a little disappointed when this was announced as I was really proud of my self made one - made of wood, plastic and general gubbins. Thanks again for reviewing this.

Perhaps there's a lesson to be learnt here - don't buy them early on. On my Baker, which I only got yesterday - it has the correct sound.

@SuperRichi1A
really? i'd like to see a video of that

@SuperRichi1A How do you know if it's the correct sound ?

The only way really is be able to recognise it.

what you're calling the "back" of the top of the screwdriver is actually the front, the bullet style top faces away from whatever you are "sonniccing"
