Thanks so much for all these tuts, so many useful tips I don't know how else I would have been able to find them out.
A quick question, when you value check and darken areas with the black 'colour layer' on, how do you know whether your using the right colour, do you colour pick a dark colour before you switch the layer on or is there a trick?
Im working my way through all your episodes and so far I have 8 pages of priceless information and notes. Again Thanks so much!!
Do you draw zoomed out like that or is it just the way the video is captured? Can you give us some insight to your setup? Sorry if this question has been asked before.
Hey Feng, how did you set up the workspace with the 3 canvases? Is it some kind of settings you toggled when creating the document or did you use a mask? Thanks!
@RisingDampChamp if u can draw on paper, u can draw on a tablet. it just takes a couple of hrs to get adjusted to, a matter of fact after a while it becomes easier especially if you've been drawing for over 15yrs....my personal opinion
What graphics tablet are you using? I've been pondering whether or not to get one but, for me, it would be a big investment.
I draw in real life, i have been for about 15 years, but i am worried that drawing on a tablet wont be as accurate. Is it really like drawing on paper or does it take some getting used to?
@RisingDampChamp it's not like drawing on paper, but is pretty similar. it'll probably feel weird at first, but give it some time to get used to. it can be just as fun and rewarding as drawing with pen and paper.
Mr. Zhu's actually correct, true professionals should be able to draw anything, doesn't matter what genre. Sci-fi, horror, fantasy, 'realistic', etc. Vehicles or people or buildings, again doesn't matter. If you understand structure, if you understand value and composition, then you should be able to draw anything.
I would also like to know how the B&W layer set up works, I noticed you seemed to almost paint on it- unless Are you just switching the grayscale color channel?
I never thought about that if so.
P.S: Keep this stuff up! Its awesome to see some real help in the field!
I agree that the fundamentals are the same for any subject but we are also here to be inspired and different subject matter inspires you at times. I like seeing all of the different subjects and like working with different subjects. You do need variety to inspire though. We wouldn't want to see you only do characters even though it's the same basic principles. I get the point you are trying to get across though :)
Hey Feng! How do you paint with the saturation layer on? I get how it's used to help bring out the values, but what color do you actually paint with? (and do you paint on the saturation layer itself or on the one below it?) Is it a layer placed on top of a layer with color? Or is the black & white layer the "skeleton" of the whole painting that you just add a color layer over it?
Listening to your talk about how you perceive painting and subject matter was very enlightening! If you could do a short video on how you approach teaching students, that would be awesome!
The part about there being no difference between approach to subject matters was very enlightening, thanks! Listening to you review your thought process is very helpful!!
Joygasm! Thanks (again) so much for doing these videos, Feng. I've been doing freelance for the film and game industry for nearly 2 years now and I still get a huge amount of information and inspiration out of your videos. I'm now pushing myself to become a much more well-rounded artist instead of just sticking with my comfort zone and your words have really helped to give my mind the paradigm shift it needed.
Great video man. I am working really hard to get my work better and better and these videos keep me pushing and are more than helpful in learning how i should think about things.
@vseslav1 Seems to me that for editing reasons and pacing the videos, it's still good to break long videos into parts, but that's just me. But I'll take these videos either way.
What kind of brush setting do you use.. I mean opacity and stuff.

I also was wondering about the saturation layer comment below my first comment? When you show the B&W layer what are you painting with?
