@RickySteveAndKarlFan Can't fail to notice that you've pasted the same comment in 3 of my videos! Want to drill it in? No one hides the fact that a small percentage of actors become 'successful' but I deem all professional actors as successful. Anyone who is getting paid to perform, whether it be voice work, radio, commercial or even panto are still successful because they are doing what they love. That should be enough for any actor. Panto is fun and keeps actors performing, so don't knock it.
Nice! Now I feel like I can talk shop with my filmmaker buddies. :)
Word on the LA street is boutique agencies are well liked out here but are usually best found by word of mouth. Apparently, networking traditionally (eg. cocktail parties) is still a big thing. I wonder what it's like in other metro areas?
@nicopolitan Absolutely! It's actually really rare that actors will get invited to audition for an agent when they have had no prior recommendation from another actor, producer or casting director. Networking really is still a big thing! Not sure about cocktail parties but sign me up for any in London! :D
@straightfromschool Yeah, it is quite a lot of money, but I guess because it's a children and young people's agency she realises that most of her clients aren't doing it to make money so they don't care. it would be quite a lot if acting was what you made your money out of though.
I have an agent and I have got about 70% of my work by myself! They do help when you find a job as they can negotiate how much you get paid and if you have any problems with the client they can help sort things out for you :) But you are right you can definitely be an actor without an agent!
@LordJackal There's a variety of agents that stretch and focus - for example lots of triple threats could probably focus with one theatrical (musical and straight acting) agent, but could potentially have one straight acting agent and one dancing agent. It entirely depends on your talents but for the majority, it's best to stick with one all-round agency.
Oooh, I should know that! I go there a lot! xD Silly me! You'll have to get that little article up then! Our futures need it! Don't blame you for the dance! haha!
This was a really handy video! I got Contacts last week and there are so many people in there! xD I'd love if you had links or tips on the headshots and CVs themselves because that is where I struggle! I've tried contacting smaller agents up north because that's where I am and might be easier for them.
@TheWrockStar Hey, I do indeed have a page on headshots over at Straight From School.org/acting-guide/guide-to-headshots/ but I'm still to write a CV article (it's long overdue!!). Tehehe, just wanted to break it down with a dance! :D
A large percentage of people looking to join Drama schools are looking to be in movies.
Sadly, what DRAMA schools DONT tell you is that a large percentage of "successful students" end up doing panto' down bloomsbury.

My agent takes 20% (not that I've ever made any money for her to take!) but still. Is that unusaul? x
aliceinwonderinc 9 months ago
@aliceinwonderinc Not at all, it IS actually 10 - 20% I think I just automatically say it wrong every time!! It certainly is a larger cut though.

So, assuming you want to do multiple mediums, you would need multiple agencies? Or are there agencies that stretch over many platforms?
Thanks for this video, though, the business aspect of acting is something schools don't address much...
