@ganstagrl501 i think its a bad idea to get a breeding pair cuz i have a pair still and i got them last August and now i have 29 gerbils, i would have 30 but ... the whole family turned aggressive and was too rough with him and they killed him :(
@ILoveMyName01 If I would have kept all of my babies I would have about 50, or even more. Your local pet shop, or pet shop supplier might take them, and even pay for them if you're lucky.
I just got my 2 girls a little sandbath today, but all they do is dig dig dig, though, I did put some sand on their backs and they seem to have enjoyed that.
should i be worried because my i have two gerbils (Laku and Salmis) but Salmis doesn't really know how to bathe in the sand. she just kicks it out of the cup.
That's okay! She'll probably learn how to use it if you give her some time. It usually takes gerbils a little while to figure out how to roll in the sand bowl. Before that, they dig in it, kick at it, and even nibble on it (it won't hurt them if they do eat some of it). Try sprinkling a little bit of sand on her back while she's in the sand bowl. She might shake the sand off her back, prompting the instinct to roll.
I just got a gerbil and put a "Sand bath" in his cage. Hees still young and just sorta.. ate the sand. Do you have to have and special type of sand? or will any kind do?
You don't have to give them sand baths, but they enjoy it, and it does help to keep their fur all nice and clean and soft. Sometimes, it takes them a while to learn what to do, but even if they just dig in it and nibble on it at first, it will be fun for them. :)
my gerbils dont know how to use the sand bath, they just tip it over.
its funny though.....i put a hole bottle worth o chinchilla sand in a big tub, and i put a little deck chair and an umbrella(the sort you finde in drinks, if u no wot i mean)
That's a cute idea with the deck chair and the umbrella! Did you take any photos??
I have a couple of gerbils who won't take a sand bath either. My gerbil Buster used to live with Herman, and now he lives with Gobo, who are both avid sandbathers. But Buster never learned from either of them! He watches them, but he's never learned to take a sand bath himself!
but when the pups are old enough to cope without there mother being there, i will set it all up again and then take some pics!! i hav 2 find another tub though coz i lost the other one! lol!
Every gerbil I've ever known has munched on the chinchilla sand. I have found, as you have, that the quality of the chinchilla sand/dust varies a lot. In fact, the brand of chinchilla sand that I used to use (and love) changed its formula at some point. Now it's so dusty that it's worse for them than some of the dusts that are available. I've had to experiment to find something that is not too coarse and also not too fine for their lungs. Now I use the stuff they use at AGS shows.
Yeah, I gave my gerbil some chinchilla dust and she proceeded to eat it. Dumb butt. It was supposed to be this dust-free formula- when I opened the bag, this cloud of dust hit me in the face and nearly made me choke.
Thats true about Chinchilla Dust. I think twinsqueaks was just making the easy mistake of seeing sand and dust as the same thing, alot of pet shops insist this, but there is a difference in the size of the granules etc. Unfortunately you have to be careful with playground sand too due to the type of sand that can be used. Check the information page on safesand . com website
for (#*$& sakes. dont give bad advice. Chinchilla dust is to fine and will cause problems with their lungs. as well you can just go to the hardware store and get some playground sand, 30 pounds for five dollars and thats the same thing you buy at the pet store. they are very cute when they take their sandbaths.
Sure! You can buy chinchilla sand or chinchilla dust at the pet store. Look in the aisle that has the supplies for chinchillas (usually near the ferret and guinea pig supplies).
Also, it might take your gerbils a little while to figure out what to do. Usually they chew on the sand for a while before they figure out to roll in it. It's OK. The sand won't hurt them if they nibble on it a bit. :)
Sometimes, if they haven't figured out how to roll in the bath yet, you can sprinkle a little bit of the sand/dust on their back, and when they shake it off, it will prompt the instinct to roll in the sand. Once they figure it out, they'll *love* rolling in the sand.

use chinilla dusting sand, as normal sand will only stain the gerbils coat be certain to remove it after 3 days as it starts to go hard

My gerbils don't get it...they just poo in it instead :-/ they don't smell though.

Yeah, not all gerbils understand sand baths. Some don't get it right away but do later. The ones who like taking sandbaths, though, *love* it. :)

Cute. My two gerbils get excited when i put their bath in, they both jump in at the same time.

You have a bustergerbil? Heyyyyy brother.
kendalchen 3 years ago
Yeah, that's exactly where the name came from, too. :-D
I adopted Herman to be a friend for Buster, who came from the local shelter.
Herman is actually short for "Hermano Annyong," because he was Buster's little adopted brother. ;)

Do you have to give gerbils a sand bath? I may get a couple gerbils.
