tom is so awesome, a superb actor and had great hair back in the day!! I love both he and abraham and Amadeus still keeps me interested and intent through all 2 hours and 45 mins- and i'm only 15!
I LOVE how frankly Shirley said "The winner is F. Murray Abraham"!
I mean, normally at award shows the presenters are like "The winner......is.....he's a guy, he was in Amadeus...and his name is F MURRAY ABBBBRRRAAAAHAMMM!"
What a classy speech and F. Murray remains to this day one of my favorite actors. However, if anyone rents/buys "The Name of the Rose" and listens to the director's commentary, he describes a meeting where F. Murray tells him point blank that after years of being pushed around by directors he's going to make their lives miserable. He'd then pull stunts that would annoy the cast and crew and especially Sean Connery. Sadly, word gets around it really seems to have hurt F. Murrays's career. Shame.
DeNiro in "Raging Bull"...Irons in "Reversal of Fortune"...They are #2, and #3 behind F. Murray Abraham in "Amadeus". THE single best performance in the history of movies, in my opinion.
@theriverrock I totally agree with you. I've seen great performances by great actors, but F. Murray's performance on Amadeus is, by far, the best performance of all times.
DeNiro in "Raging Bull"...Irons in "Reversal of Fortune"...They are #2, and #3 behind F. Murray Abraham in Amadeus. THE single best performance in the history of movies, in my opinion.
One of the most deserving awards ever given out from any awards group. F. Murray Abraham gave a subtle performance for the ages that has so much more than meets the eye. He is one of our best and more underrated actors. I do want to say that Tom Hulce did give a fantastic performance as well.
What comes to Hulce and not receiving oscar (absolutely great performance, no doubt), I think it was anyhow a wrong move to put gay actor to play, granted jesting and emotional, but also boozing & womanizing and definitely straight Mozart (there are a very few gay classical composers as in every music genre by the way). So if this film has a downside it's the absence of that "love" and "compassion" which Hulce's character tries so desperately to be champion of.
@KKKSS67 I don't think they knew Hulce was gay. Hell, I didn't know Hulce was gay until I saw Stranger than Fiction. Had me fooled. I can see what you mean, but he was a really good actor anyways and him being gay was not obvious.
That MURRAY mentioned TOM HULCE, brought tears to my eyes, because it should have been a double Oscar given out for BOTH of these wonderful actors that evening. Tom wherever you are, I genuflect to your talent and I thank you for your many wonderful performances. :)
Sorry for my bad english but I want to say something: I think that it could be a great idea put some scenes from the movies just for watch the winning performances, you know what I mean? because it could be really great.
So much hatred ,for his character in the role he played . And to say what he said after receiving his Oscar reminds me he was acting ( in the movie) after all!
@MagnusHansenMusic How true. I think F Murray Abraham showed great class and respect for saying what he did about Tom Hulce. The two of them together won that award and I will always consider Tom Hulce a Best Actor Winner

I loved F. Murray Abraham in Amadeus, totally deserved but... Its a shame that he became the icon of an actor becoming a failure after winning an Oscar.
@SethBlizzard An Oscar is a mere trifle compared to what Mozart has given the world. Triumph? No sir, Mozart still reigns. After all, how many people, wihout having seen this wonderful movie, would have even heard of Salieri?
I love how Tom Hulce was so happy for his co-worker in 'Amadeus'. I was reading an interview with Tom, and they asked him if he was mad he didn't win, he said not at all, atleast getting nominated was a victory for him, he was so glad F. Murray Abraham won. Shows how kind-hearted Tom is. :)
F. Murray Araham, a very great actor. He would have deserved another nomination for best supporting actor in 1987 for his role in "The name of the rose". He was simply gorgeous as Bernardo Gui.
They totally should've given a joint Oscar for this category just this once. Tom Hulce and F. Murray Abraham both gave such a great performance. I want to know how long it took Tom to get that "obscene giggle" in the words of Salieri(Abraham) down pat. Epic performances by both men, and I'm glad at least one of them won
Kind of sad the two frontrunners have done nothing of note since Amadeus. Finney, Waterston, and Bridges are great actors, but Hulce and Abraham could have been and seemed to take mediocre or obscure roles, Hulce's role in Dominick and Eugene notewithstanding.
But I think Tom deserved the Oscar because Salieri stays Salieri in the whole film and Mozart changes from a funny, happy guy to a sad and poor man which includes a lot more ... talent... I mean ... you don't film a movie in one shot and so in every scene Tom Hulce had to get into how Mozart's personality has already changed and Salieri is always the same kind of character.
But it's okay at least the Oscar was for Amadeus. nice speech though
The first time I saw 'Amadeus', even though I loved it, I wasn't sure why Abraham won, but after watching a few more times (it's one of my favorite movies), I realized that Abraham deserved it more because his role was harder.
Both characters are emotional and passionate but Abraham's character is less eccentric and had to convey his emotions simply with a look or a glare.
This is wonderful. I've never been more touched by a film than Amadeus and Abraham's performance is truly a once in a century performance. Milos Forman is a brilliant director who picked a perfect cast to make the perfect film.
THANK YOU TOM HULCE FOR EXISTING. I love you in both amadeus and parenthood, and you brought two of my now favorite musicals, Spring Awakening and American Idiot, to the stage. I LOVE YOU! you are such a cutie pie :)
Finally somebody thanks Milos Forman... he deserves the credit and it is nice that as opposed to Saul Zaentz, Michael Douglas and Paul Newman who won awards for his films and didn't even mention him amongs a whole list of names, F. Murray devotes a nice part of his 45 seconds to the director. Mentioning cast and crew and leaving out the director is just plain mean.
I loved this guy in Amadeus and also Scarface..One Badass Motherfucker This Murray guy..Shit, why hasn't this guy been in a blockbuster???talent is spewing all over this guy
@freedomland11 Well according to Annaud who directed him in The Name of the Rose, winning the oscar really got in his head and he was very arrogant and unprofessional. He made Sean Connery wait for him at the set etc. And when word got around nobody wanted to cast him in blockbusters. Quite sad.
So simple, yet so amazing. This guy deserved it, yet knew that without Hulce he couldn't have done it. I love a humble guy and he embodies it. He was phenomenal in this film.
