  • Vince Vaughn does knife making tutorials?!

  • @enricokorderos lol, I guess I sound like Vince.

  • can you use the stock removal method for somethimg bigger like a sword?

  • @XtremeKiler97 yes, absolutely

  • D2 would be a nightmare to do by hand simply because of it's high wear resistance properties; it would take forever without machines to grind and cut the stock.

  • how long did it take you to finish this knife like a weekend a week or a month

  • Oh, I posted a little too early.

  • Would it be a better idea to heat it up, then let it cool down to make the metal a bit softer for the whole profiling process, and then heat it back up and rapid cool it to make it a bit tougher?

  • @MrGamerFuel great question. yes.

  • Great video, love it. I will definitely try this.

  • Hi, dont want to sound like an idiot or anything, im from the uk and recently got into the idea of knife making, and was wondering if Bright Mild Steel was ok to use as alot of uk sites didnt use the 1095 numbering so on. thanks for the video also.

  • @joeboislim you do sound like a sort of redneck idiot!mild steel probably harden enough to keep/hold an edge we'll get some proper steel from an engineering shop, love dad

  • @joeboislim Good question but I don't really know. Got to look it up somehow. The most important thing is the % of carbon content. Will determine whether it is suitable for knifemaking.

  • @epicfantasy where do you get your metal and wat kind of metal is it

  • @joeboislim Bright mild steel would be of no use as it has a very low carbon content and thus would not harden and would have awful edge holding. You need to use carbon steel and in england they are categorised under a different system: tool steels are similar with O1 being called BO1 and D2 being called BD2. The carbon steels are categorized under the EN system. EN44 would be closest to 1095 steel. There are many good knife making supply stores online who will supply good knife steel.

  • @sillybillybadboy Thanks for your help, i found a good site which i bought some 01 from. but you helped out with a bunch so i can find cheaper deals so on.

  • can you use d2 steel? that is all i can find on starrett.com

  • @TheMcattackMan hmmm, You can use D2 steel. I am not sure how well it will be. I never tried it. Try amazon. I have links on my website to this exact steel by starrett.

  • Thanks for such a great video! I've been looking to make a hunting knife, mostly because i'm too broke or cheap to buy one, your videos were really helpful...especially for someone that has no experience. Come payday i'll get the stuff and try it out. Thanks again, awesome video!

  • If I were to make a piece of damascus steel, would you recommend doing this way to actually make the knife?

  • @damnedxblood no, you should use the forging method. i have a tutorial.

  • @epicfantasy Thank you, I was curious since I haven't made that many things. Kinda new to smithing still.

  • @epicfantasy would it be possible to do this but make a throwing knife?

  • @DIGITALXxXDRAGON Yes, absolutely. But, a throwing knife has to have a very specific balance. You have to get the right design for it.

  • @epicfantasy i know. thanks:)

  • is it hard to harden the blade with a torch? and can you make the knife without the handle?

  • @unkelmonkey with a torch is a bit tricky, just take your time and go sslow so you don't get overly hot spots. Without a handle would look good.

  • what do you think about using worn out files for steel?

  • @sasquatch4liffee generally, old files are terrific for knifemaking.

  • @epicfantasy i would be willing to buy some of your knives, its your choice to sell them but if you do i was wondering how much you would sell for. Nice job by the way

  • Nice job! You got me thinking about making one.

  • can i buy the steel in a hardware store?

  • Wow, this deff. helps! great video! love the knife :)

  • what gauge?

  • Can you give me a link to the page you got the steel because

P.S. I cant find it on amazon

  • @allihutchins just look up o1 steel on google, amazon or Ebay

  • great movie - showing how to create a custom knife :) I have few knifemaking movies on my channel too - please take a look and say what do You think

  • do you think you could probably give me a a link on where to buy the steel. I searched for it on amazon couldn't find it I would be extremely thankful if you could.

  • very good, love your videos.. i copied your design for the mini catapult or "onager" and then built a 6 food one that was capable of throwing tenis balls about 300 m :) keep up the good work! btw sheath tutorial?

  • @phunkyphantom619 Great job on the catapult. Lot of fun ! Maybe a sheath vid for the sword. Lot of people ask for sheath vids though.

  • If i temper it properly can i use scrap steel?

  • @fadugleman Difficult to say. It all depends on the steel. Some cannot be tempered satisfactory. But... I say go for it and learn along the way.

  • Motorola RAZR my ass! Btw nice vid! Thanks for sharing!

  • Could you use a dremil to cut it?

  • @GTWGamer not sure, probably depends on the attachment you use. But I think it is probably too much steel for a dremel.

  • @GTWGamer yes you could i cut a lot of steel with a dremil

  • @GTWGamer no a dremel would work great

  • @GTWGamer I used a dremel to cut it, takes time but it works :)

  • are you going to use it for a bushcraft knife

  • when you are sharpening the knife can you use the bench grinder instead.

  • @thesupergus123 Maybe just in the beginning but be careful! Cant' get the final edge with a bench grinder. Have to do that by hand if you want it nice and sharp.

  • What kind of drill bit did you use to drill the holes?

  • @PhiWong207 Great question, I used a cobalt bit.

  • How much does a simple belt sander cost?

  • @RAMBOKIDx7 Fifty dollars.

  • @epicfantasy Thank you

  • this is good but i got a question...

am i using good steel O4

and its stainnless and it is soooo hard

  • @s1debar2r0cks I am not familiar with O4 steel. Not sure about this. Can you switch to another steel?

  • @epicfantasy My dad wants it in 04 and now im almost done geting rid of stock

  • @epicfantasy sheath tutorial?

  • @Xythe43 lot of people ask for a sheath tutorial. I really should do one.

  • @epicfantasy Please do!!

  • @s1debar2r0cks stainless is hard but brittle so it doesnt hold a good edge any weapon that rusts is usually a good weapon

  • Can you use a metal grinder to add the bevel to the blade and make the knife into a tanto point?

  • is a2 tool steel good for knife making??

  • @knifeguy98 Yes, A-2 is a great steel for knifemaking, air hardened. But it is challenging to work with. Typically for advanced smiths.

  • @epicfantasy really i have made some good knives with a2 and i am by no means an advanced smith

  • Great tutorial! Thanks for the videos.

  • that cant be 01 oil harden steel, we sell then in drill rods and wont cut them because it will tare up our saw blade. its inpossiable to cut

  • @skidd417 You buy the steel unhardened and the company lets you know (if they are a good knife supplier) What temps are needed to harden and temper after the shaping.

  • @IKSDoomie of course, its anneled, sorry man stupied question. sad thing is is that i sell steel lol. i work at metal supermarkets. google it

  • and where do you buy your metal, if you could give me a link thatd be great

  • could i use this technique to make a pretty big bowie knife, or a kukri

  • @garbers5 Yes, lot of work though.

  • @epicfantasy what would be so different about it

  • @garbers5 THe only difference would be that with a larger knife like a kukrik or bowie is that there is a whole lot more steel to work on. Thats all. Maybe double the hours of work. Otherwise no difference.

  • @epicfantasy thanks and could you give me a link to where you get your 01 steel ive been having a hard time finding some

  • THANK YOU! FINALLY I GOOD KNIFE MAKING VIDEO!

  • @KnifeCrazzzzy Thanks, I really put a lot of time and effort into trying to make a good tutorial. Was a lot of work but it paid off.

  • I've been thinking about this ever since I saw this video for the first time when it was uploaded but I can't get my hands on some O1 steel. BUT I have more old table saw blades than I can count, would they work well and keep an edge?

  • @TheWolf739 I am not sure. I say give it a try and see!

  • @TheWolf739 If the blades do not have carbide tips, the entire blade is good steel, and good for knives.

If they do have carbide tips, the disc part might be lower quality.

  • I like this idea! Very interesting!

  • do you have any suggestions on how to find suitable tools for these types of projects for a beginner? Im not very knowlegeable about power tools so any suggestions would be helpful

  • @rorag111 Harbor Freight has a lot of great tool at cheap prices.

  • @epicfantasy thanks for the help. big fan of your channel btw

  • @epicfantasy thanks for the help. big fan of your channel btw

  • Can I use an Angle Grinder

  • @nitwit6645 I think yes, but be careful and go slow. It might be too powerful.

  • When I do projects like this, I end up drilling the same way, with a handheld drill motor. Wouldn't it be great to just have a small bench drill press haha.

  • @sabresfn2661 I finally bought one. Love it.

  • I love your videos, dude! You're such a Renaissance man! :-)

  • this would be fun if i had the stuff u use... but i dont have it. $#&%.

  • @epicfantasy is it posable to use this method for makeing a sword ?

  • @crryan9 Yes definitely. lot of work though.

  • is wood ok to

  • Awesome

  • so i made my own homemade forge but im not sure what metal to buy whats easyiest for a beginier or just any steel thats common

  • @wolfcookieo9 For now just scrounge up any steel you can. Rebar is a nice place to start. You can buy short pieces of rebar in home improvement stores. Just for practicing is good. When you are ready to make a knife then get some good 01 steel.

  • hey man that knive is Funking awsome I have a question for you could you make a tutorial for how to make a paper or cardboard gun PLZ becouse I thought you are always making the coolest weapons and armor stuf so I thought you could make a paper or cardboard gun

  • hi agen what was the company were u got ur steel

  • @jakebra221 I got the steel on amazon. but the company that makes it is called Starrett.

  • I still wanna do a banner exchange:)

  • is there anything you dont know how to do your amazing? How did you learn all this?

  • @Darkvirtue9 thanks! it's just a lot of fun :)

  • @epicfantasy two things 1. is 1/8 inch by 2 inches the best for making knives? and 2. if i were to put more holes in the handle could i have a glow in the dark handle?

  • It's an "epic fantasy" of mine, to make varying knives. I confiscated an old HYDE 5-in-1 tool, a buddy was throwing out and using it to do my first project. It's not the best steel to use probably, but it's OJT for sure. Looks like it may make a decent mora style knife.

Thanks guy, for sharing your experience and tips!

  • @4micaman thanks and wow, nice. You go for it. I will be forging a knife this summer. You probably will like those vids!

  • Requirements: Belt grinder, steel

    Optional: Sharpie

  • @tommie314101 lol!

  • @epicfantasy

Do you use any drill bit to drill the holes in the metal, or do you need a special bit?

  • @Impmon51 YOu should use metal cutting bits. Wood bits wouldn't be good. But metal cutting drill bits are very common!

  • Thanks dude, I'm using these tips hopfully to make my first knife. :D

  • @Leontheon Good luck and have fun. Keep at it and don't give up!

  • Will do dude, will do. I'm actually in progress at the moment too. :L

  • waited for so long, thank will, your like the most handy man on the world!

  • NIce work Will...I like this one alot...Keep up the great how to Vids

  • make a katana

    fold it like 10000 times

  • Where the hell i the next video?

  • @scherry1982 I need time, probably by the end of this weekend.

  • @epicfantasy its here!

  • really looking forward to seeing the next part of this one, any ideas when it will be up?

  • @yellowdogger I am hoping to get it done this weekend. Got to get it on the forge to harden and temper. I filed the bevel further out for a sharper edge. Did some of the handle work yesterday. Used some very nice Burl wood for the handle, temporarily pinned it and started shaping the handle. Got it all on video.

  • A good way to make an even bevel is to use the file to cut grooves from the start of the bevel to the edge. You leave spaces between the grooves that are a little bit narrower than the width of the file (wich defines the width of the grooves). Do one side then the other, fileing the grooves so they meet up with the unfiles spaces on the first side, this lets you define an even edge with the file, and it actually seems to cut quicker.

  • @phookadude You can do the whole thing with just a hacksaw and a file! Lot of work but you can! Don't let obstacles stop you!

  • @epicfantasy I know I have made swords with a file and hacksaw

  • Good tutorial for a basic knife. I've been wanting to try this for a while but I lack the grinder and sander to make anything half decent. Definitely a future project for once I have my own house some years from now.

  • wiil do and thanks again, i was wandering had you ever tried tsukamaki ( Japanses handle wrapping) it's a very fun and soothing hobbie just curious?

  • @toxi87 Tsukamaki is terrific although I have never tried it. Have a few beautiful blades with it though.

  • nice knife!!! i think it is realy good qualety

  • man you have a lot of patience

  • just a tip when drilling metal go slow with mild presher... if you want to save your drill bit... it'll still drill about the same speed

  • can you use a steel sharpener

  • thank you so much i'm getting ready to start makeing blades and this is perfect thank you.

  • @toxi87 You are very welcome. Thanks for watching. Have fun and if you take any pics of your blades be sure to send em to me!

  • nice

  • i am out of tittle to give you lol! great vid!

  • are you actually using a nice camera?

  • @losgatosstudios Yup! Bought a nicer camera, gave that other one with the spot on the lens to my son.

  • waaaaaaaaa i wanna make a real samurai out of this metal

  • in portugal knifes have to be 3.94 inches long xD

  • That looks like a LOT of my throwing knives.

    Thanks again Will,

    Nico

  • I got 3 feet of knife steel, a grinder and an afternoon, what you doin'? Watching your videos.....

  • @1zacster lol! Gotcha! Seriously though you have fun with that knife steel! And if you take any pics be sure to send em to me so I can add them to my blacksmithing site!

  • wow this is hes first project without using any cardboard

  • @TheXxsylvanxX lol! I should do a cardboard knife tutorial!

  • @epicfantasy hehe nice knife by the way "cardboardman" :DD

  • @epicfantasy i finished mine well its a different style though :D its a dagger......A CARD BOARD DAGGAH

  • great video :)

  • as always awsome vid!

  • What was that machine in 4:41 whats it called?

  • @StealthyPotatoes a 1 inch belt sander, he says it when your at 4:41 haha

  • great! thanks much for the awesome videos

  • Keep up the good work bud.

  • can wait till second part when are you planning are posting it?

  • when are you uploading part 2?

  • your bevel is wayyyy to steep. You should make this blade with a full flat grind. or atleast a hollow grind. It will cut much better.

  • @THEBIRDMAN9412 thanks! You are right. I am thinking I might file out this bevel.

  • @epicfantasy no problem :)

  • did you say a bastard file??

  • Nice to see ya picked up some steel to make a blade :) The bevel looks a little steep for 1/8". Nice steel choice. I love O-1

  • @ArtistBlade1972 thanks, the O-1 is great. You are right about the bevel. I might file it out some more.

  • @epicfantasy Are you going for a scandi grind on this one?

  • what kind of sanders did you use?

  • nice and finally something i may be able to make myself

aside from the tempering as i dont have a forge

  • @AiBhai you can temper in an oven

  • @themusic928 seriously? does it damage the oven? and does it have to be a certain type of oven?

  • @AiBhai nope just a regular oven im not sure on what temperature but a normal kitchen oven will work

  • @AiBhai Before you temper in an oven, you have to harden the blade with a forge or an oxyacetylene torch...

  • very nice cant wait for part 2

next knife make it out of titanium :P

@Mrlegomoviedude7: thanks for not posting those stupid FIRST!!!!!1! comments :P

  • You sir are one talented individual.

  • thanx

  • awesome!!!!! thank u for making this
