I finally found what bothers me about Jonas. I really do enjoy his voice and I think hes a good Marius. . . . . if i dont look at him. His eyes bother the shit out of me!!!!
Love how Gavroche is just towering over everyone in the final chorus! Very cute. And Ramin Karimloo, as Enjolras, did well in going all out, as Enjolras is not the kind of character to hold back.
@hpwolf123 same here! The first time I saw it was in Choir Class, then I came home and found ou that my dad the CD of the Original Broadway cast and I flipped!!!
You know... the only reason Katie Hall wasn't absolutely amazing here (she HAS the voice) was so she would not overpower nor overshadow Jonas... gahhh he did it so badly I was cringing through my favourite song :S ... Ramin was awesome :3
@PadProngs I think everyone is overreacting to Nick. He wasn't THAT bad. He's actually got a nice voice, but this part is just out of his range. But honestly, I'm happy he's trying new things and not just resting on his boy band laurels. And to be honest, I kind of completely disagree with everyone about Ramin. I think he's being way too hammy in this song. He's got a great voice, but he needs to tone it back a bit and not chew the scenery so hard.
What makes me like this version more is SAMANTHA BARKS part because her voice is just great :) Frances can't do it anymore although she did great...but Sam is the one now! :D
anybody agree that a black Javert seems to work better? (especially because his character was born of a gypsy, so it would make sense that he be of darker complexion), also, although it may be the actor, but he also seems a lot more formidable
(sry, don't mean to make any racist comments, however I feel there's nothing racist about my comment, but if there is I'm sorry)
I like the Nick Jonas West End voice! It's MUCH better than his band voice.
Some may say it was a mistake to hire him here, I say it was brilliant. They attracted a different crowd, brought NJonas back to his better performance level, and he has a good, youthful, (dare I say) immature voice; over all: PERFECT MARIUS.
PS can someone tell me when Raminloo can be Jean Valjean? :)
im a HUGE jonas brothers fan. i think nick did an amazing job with Les Mis but his broadway voice isnt as strong as his regular singing voice. seeing as the singing styles are very different i"d say he held his own. still could use some practice tho.
I've always wondered what the Royal Philharmonic thinks when they play with the cast. That violin solo is EPIC, but at the end of the Intermission and the Concert, he (concert master violin) starts waving at everyone. Sigh, he's not supposed to do that...
While I've never cared about the Jonas Brothers and Nick doesn't sound like anything special I must respect him for trying to take on something as respected and epic as Les Mis.
I originally didn't like the idea of Nick Jonas being marius, but he did a fantastic job as playing a young rogue and Empty Chair and Empty tables was excellent!
I wish that Enjolras got to his part with everyone else singing theirs from 2:49-3:10. I always pictured him singing "One more day before the storm...at the barricades of freedom! Will you take your place with me!" If done right, he could sing his high parts between Valjean and Eponine so they don't interrupt each other fully. How cool would that be??
all the performers here has the freshest faces ever. they made all the characters young and very much alive!!! they may hate the 25th and compare it always to the 10th but both productions are really awesome!!! stop hatin' people!!! ;) ;) ;)
This is an amazing cast- except Nick Jonas failed to deliver...I don't hate him or anything, Michael Ball is just the Marius I love. But it still gave me shivers. I really want to be Eponine some day...:)
My eyes was in tears when the really good Alfie Boe started to sing but my emotional feelings ended abruptly in disapointment when Nick Jonas started to sing. He is way to weak and his boyband voice doesn´t fit together on stage with real musical tenors and baritones. Why couldn´t they choose a real musical artist to play Marius at the 25:th aniversary ?
And the man with the golden voice Ramin Karimloo........WOW !!!
I love going on here and seeing all the comments about Nick Jonas. (sarcasm, by the way). Let's forget about the fact that he's a Jonas Brother and focus on how incredible he was as Marius. There's a life outside of Disney, my friends.
@InfinityxShark Oh my god, I was not expecting someone to mention that on here. You, sir (ma'am), have made my day officially awesome. And that was pretty hard to do - I had ACT test this morning!!!!

It's the characters first love. He is supposed to be awkward, frightened of death, and timid.
Yes Nick played in Les Miserables as a boy but remember nearly ten years ago. He was in many broadway plays and so just because he wasn't a "challenging role" eight years ago doesn't mean he will never be capable.
They obviously saw something in him and chose him for a reason. You say you have respect for this beautiful piece of art but you bash it through each review. Well stop and respec

So all you people focusing on how awful or amazing Nick was just shut up!
That is not what this was about. This is a performance that is 25 years old. Him not holding enough emotion? This is not the acting edition if you noticed this is the concert edition of the broadway aka no real acting needed.
Marius is supposed to be late teens to twenty yes? So the Jonas as you all continue to call him is the perfect age. It's the characters first love. He is supposed to be awkward, frightened of deat
@Crab0Cakes This Eponine is played by Samantha Barks. The original Eponine in the original London production and Broadway production is Frances Ruffele.
I agree with a lot of people that Nick Jonas isn't the best Marius, but it's not his fault he got picked for that role, he isn't experienced, granted he shouldn't have got picked because he isn't good enough, but anyone would jump at the role of Marius if given the chance. If anyone is to blame for him playing an awful Marius it's Cameron Mackintosh for picking him :) (Just my opinion)
I have a different attitude than you guys about Nick Jonas. He doesn't have the power and the range to sing as well as the other guys, but he doesn't HAVE to do this. He could cash a bunch of Disney checks and make money from teenaged girls buying posters and retire rich and happy. But he went out on a limb to do something this challenging and this ambitious. I give him a lot of props and respect for that.
@MikeStrongman I agree. And I actually think he fits the part; young, inexperienced, scared... so his voice isn't at the level of Michael Ball...over all I think Nick did great. I didn't even recognize his voice sometimes.
@MikeStrongman Not only that, but no one FORCED him to do this role. He could have said, very easily, "Thanks, but I don't have the ability to do this role."
@MikeStrongman So should we give props to every crappy singer, just because he's trying? You're either talented enough to appear in such a show, or you're not. And (as much as he'd wish to) he's not, sorry. He should know his league.
@jazzownik "you're either talented enough to appear in such a show or you're not."... uhm.... he *IS* in this show. Apparently Cameron MacIntosh who has been with this show for 25 years disagrees with you. And he wasn't crappy... he just wasn't as strong as the other, more experienced, theater actors. You make no valid points.
@bdelliott3 I'd rather see him do more respectable stuff than going back to that joke of a channel. If he wants to actually do something good, let him try.
@MikeStrongman Now that I'll agree with. I admire that. But at the same time, I don't think he was the best choice. There had to be others just as good and certainly better.
@MikeStrongman I have no problems with him taking risks or branching out into another form of music. But he could've started with a smaller less demanding part. Michael Ball completely humiliated him in the encore.
I have to say, I was very disappointed with Nick's delivery of the "My place is here, I fight with you!" line. His way of pausing through it was... abrupt and very awkward, in my opinion. o_o
LOL 3:17 the conductor is so into it, he gives a little jump as he brings the choir in for the last, big "... one day MORE". Lovely, nothing quite like people who love their job!
@hecate235 Ha! Since you mentioned "people who love their job", you should look at Look Down/The Robbery. When Ramin first comes on stage (1:35) watch as he looks around the venue. You can tell he's thinking, "Hell f*cking yeah, this is where I belong!"
I feel like casting Nick Jonas as Marius is like casting me as Eponine. Even though I'm a good singer and I can sing all her parts, doesn't mean that I'm the best person for the job lol
I LOVE RAMIN KARMLOO. BEST ENJOLRAS EVER. He also makes Nick Jonas look like an even worse Marius than he already would if he were up there by himself.
@annief31 Wow, could you be any more mean-spirited and condescending? That's Samantha Barks, she's playing Eponine, that's her costume in the musical, and a great many posters on these threads rather admire her voice.
Who was the girl in the short black dress with the long curly that played eponine's part in this ending song? and I'm not meaning Samantha Barks I'm meaning the one that is with the dream cast
@KeeleyKit But in dream cast was Lea Salonga as Eponine, in this concert Lea is Fantine...The girl you said...Frances,is Eponinde in the original cast :d
@KeeleyKit Like scullen08 said, She's Francis Ruffele. She was the original Eponine. Also, a little trivia, Eponine from the dream cast (Lea Salonga) is Fantine in this cast. BTW, that was not the dream cast, that was (mostly) the original cast (with the exception of Enjolras).
Hate to break it to all the Jonas Brothers fans out there, but Nick really sucks as Marius. He might make it as a pop star but not musical material in my opinion.
Really incredible. But I have to say this: Nick Jonas reminds me of that guy who got the part in the school play because they'd already casted all the REALLY strong singers and his "mehness" was all they had left.
@jemmirox12 No, this is a concert event at O2. I hate to break it to you, but Broadway is a business. Their "good reason" is that they know that he has a lot of fans in London, and they know that the O2 is a BIG stadium with a high capacity. They know that people are willing to pay top dollar for any one of the those seats. He was cast because he was a pretty good singer and he had a high public appeal. I think that next to all of those great performers his talent doesn't really shine.
@jemmirox12 but the reason wasn't his talent, it was because he appeals to a younger audience. people who normally wouldn't look twice at something as good as les mis
I finally found what bothers me about Jonas. I really do enjoy his voice and I think hes a good Marius. . . . . if i dont look at him. His eyes bother the shit out of me!!!!

And this, in itself,is a good thing I guess. But I think the reaction you have to Nick depends on how you were introduced to him in the first place. I never even heard about the Jonas brothers, had no idea about the music whatsoever,

Whomever plays Epinnine (is that how you spell it) is FANTASTIC.
Crab0Cakes 10 months ago
@Crab0Cakes This Eponine is played by Samantha Barks. The original Eponine in the original London production and Broadway production is Frances Ruffele.

I agree with a lot of people that Nick Jonas isn't the best Marius, but it's not his fault he got picked for that role, he isn't experienced, granted he shouldn't have got picked because he isn't good enough, but anyone would jump at the role of Marius if given the chance. If anyone is to blame for him playing an awful Marius it's Cameron Mackintosh for picking him :) (Just my opinion)
connor92100 10 months ago 6
I have a different attitude than you guys about Nick Jonas. He doesn't have the power and the range to sing as well as the other guys, but he doesn't HAVE to do this. He could cash a bunch of Disney checks and make money from teenaged girls buying posters and retire rich and happy. But he went out on a limb to do something this challenging and this ambitious. I give him a lot of props and respect for that.
MikeStrongman 10 months ago 102
@MikeStrongman I agree. And I actually think he fits the part; young, inexperienced, scared... so his voice isn't at the level of Michael Ball...over all I think Nick did great. I didn't even recognize his voice sometimes.
boredprincess08 10 months ago
@MikeStrongman Not only that, but no one FORCED him to do this role. He could have said, very easily, "Thanks, but I don't have the ability to do this role."
meginmd 10 months ago
@MikeStrongman So should we give props to every crappy singer, just because he's trying? You're either talented enough to appear in such a show, or you're not. And (as much as he'd wish to) he's not, sorry. He should know his league.
jazzownik 10 months ago
@jazzownik "you're either talented enough to appear in such a show or you're not."... uhm.... he *IS* in this show. Apparently Cameron MacIntosh who has been with this show for 25 years disagrees with you. And he wasn't crappy... he just wasn't as strong as the other, more experienced, theater actors. You make no valid points.

@MikeStrongman He should go back to doing Disney then. Leave the finer aspects of music to the finer singers and musicians.
bdelliott3 9 months ago 2
@bdelliott3 I'd rather see him do more respectable stuff than going back to that joke of a channel. If he wants to actually do something good, let him try.
SRides96 9 months ago 3
@MikeStrongman Now that I'll agree with. I admire that. But at the same time, I don't think he was the best choice. There had to be others just as good and certainly better.
Ryuutakesh1 8 months ago
@MikeStrongman I have no problems with him taking risks or branching out into another form of music. But he could've started with a smaller less demanding part. Michael Ball completely humiliated him in the encore.

Thumbs up if you think this song would be even more epic if Enjolras was holding a sword in his hand instead of a musket!!
Is that Nick Jonas as Marius? I was too busy staring at hand motion (singular) he was showing for the entire show.
brendanp007 10 months ago 2
Is Nick Jonas constipated throughout this entire song??
Reggs14 10 months ago
I have to say, I was very disappointed with Nick's delivery of the "My place is here, I fight with you!" line. His way of pausing through it was... abrupt and very awkward, in my opinion. o_o

boredprincess08 10 months ago
@hecate235 Ha! Since you mentioned "people who love their job", you should look at Look Down/The Robbery. When Ramin first comes on stage (1:35) watch as he looks around the venue. You can tell he's thinking, "Hell f*cking yeah, this is where I belong!"

I feel like casting Nick Jonas as Marius is like casting me as Eponine. Even though I'm a good singer and I can sing all her parts, doesn't mean that I'm the best person for the job lol

@KeeleyKit She's Frances Ruffele.

@KeeleyKit The 10th Anniversary Cast? That's Lea Salonga. The OLC was Frances Ruffelle.

@KeeleyKit actually frances ruffele was a part of the original london cast; lea salonga plays eponine in the dream cast version
chamumydarling 10 months ago
@KeeleyKit But in dream cast was Lea Salonga as Eponine, in this concert Lea is Fantine...The girl you said...Frances,is Eponinde in the original cast :d
latinmoonlight 9 months ago
@KeeleyKit Like scullen08 said, She's Francis Ruffele. She was the original Eponine. Also, a little trivia, Eponine from the dream cast (Lea Salonga) is Fantine in this cast. BTW, that was not the dream cast, that was (mostly) the original cast (with the exception of Enjolras).

Really incredible. But I have to say this: Nick Jonas reminds me of that guy who got the part in the school play because they'd already casted all the REALLY strong singers and his "mehness" was all they had left.
EYDstudios 11 months ago 3
@EYDstudios just remember, this is BROADWAY. they dont settle for "mehness". if they cast him, they had a good reason to
jemmirox12 11 months ago
@jemmirox12 No, this is a concert event at O2. I hate to break it to you, but Broadway is a business. Their "good reason" is that they know that he has a lot of fans in London, and they know that the O2 is a BIG stadium with a high capacity. They know that people are willing to pay top dollar for any one of the those seats. He was cast because he was a pretty good singer and he had a high public appeal. I think that next to all of those great performers his talent doesn't really shine.
EYDstudios 11 months ago
@EYDstudios it is true that he sticks out because his voice isn't as full and trained. but you have to admit he does have genuine talent
jemmirox12 11 months ago
@jemmirox12 That's exactly what I'm saying. He doesn't..... "fit", so to speak.

@jemmirox12 but the reason wasn't his talent, it was because he appeals to a younger audience. people who normally wouldn't look twice at something as good as les mis
