Even though they went into hip hop, they were a real hardcore punk band. After Paul's Boutique, they really became good musicians and this was the time they got back into their punk roots. Love them as both punk and hip hop. Great cover too.

They sounded solid in the 90's as a hc band, but they truly excel as a hip hop group. i'm not hating on the beasties, but most their songs from their 80's hc stuff is sloppy at best.

The first time I saw the Beastie Boys was with Fishbone...Fishbone was headlining and the Beastie Boys were still doing their quasi-punk rap stuff that lead them to hooking up with Run DMC. They were definitely punk though, and had strong roots in that scene far before they did rap.

It was also Mike's Birthday so they threw a huge cake on him. The best show I've ever seen.
