Great song thanks for posting. Sadly the truth at this time in history it is not the youth who will become our leaders it is & will be the fatcats who run our lives for the foreseeable future. Hopefully that'll change.
All the chavs that were in my Questions and Morality class frowned at this. They've never heard of JC before. Once this finished they loved it so much we got it played in an assembly and everyone shouted "What is truth?"
...This is why I love him. Changing everyone's perspective.
even if not all commenters agree on everything .. its nice to finaly find a good song that hant gotten that evil disslike button clicked LOL glad we can all agree that cash was great
Incredible song Mr. Cash, so much truth in it; Toby Keith should recut it and release it; unfortunately Toby would be vilified as unamerican by the blow-hards and good-ole boys who are caught up in the controlled divide and conquer political system.
Johnny is an immortal! This song was an anthem for me when I was young. I am still asking that question now I am much older - WHAT IS TRUTH? Pollies don't know, or aren't telling. Does anybody know?
this song has a real meaning "cut of his clothes and the length of his hair" is true i hate the bowl shaped hair cuts kids wear nowa days but i trust them
That is a reference to ther Gospel of John when Pilate looked at Jesus, who had promised to tell the truth and asked "Quid est Veritas?" (What is Truth) Get it, Pilate with his Roman Clothes and close cropped Roman Haircut, looked at Jesus with his Nazarene lack of Haircut and Beard, and the cut of his robe.........and he didn't believe him....until months later
A song like this is needed to be played on the radio again even as a remix to get the message out so people today young and old alike will learn not to be deceived by too much propaganda.
Well, I solemnly swear it was our way. I was 18 in 1970 when this song was released. If we found truth, for the most part it was without much help from the older generation. And we did no better - and, I think - no worse than those who went before. Johnny Cash is dead. Vietnam is history. Another generation is preparing to take over. Then - I solemnly swear it'll be their way. It goes on and on.
I admit I am a bit out of touch. Is the lonely voice of youth still asking "What is truth?"
@MaiHarinder My girlfriend and I just reunited after last seeing each other in 1971 at a outdoor concert in Mississippi that lasted 3 days. I am trying to find out where concert was (outside of Jackson, I think). It was the first time I ever saw JC and he played Ring of Fire...awesome stuff.
@Silentstoons I'm sorry to hear that, but you know, it's always been that way. A small minority gets things done. In this world there are a few lions and many sheep.
@Silentstoons Most of us Sikh lions are very nice people who are trying to make the world a better place for all. I, for one, have never murdered anyone. I did kill a guy once, but that was self-defence. He had just killed my son and was trying to kill me. If I were a sheep, I'd be dead now and then who would you be writing to on YouTube?
I have always loved this little masterpiece, that for some strange reason was only released on a 45'. Still sittin' here in my JC collection, though... Sadly, I only took the opportunity to see this great man live on stage once, during his Scandinavian tour back in the early 70's. I had many more opportunities later on in my life, as I got around to spend a lot of my time in the US, but I guess I was in no rush; Fully convinced that the man was immortal...
@TheProudSwede I understand how you feel. I was lucky to see him live three times, in Yakima, Wa in 1979, in Drammen, Norway in 1982, and finally in Oslo, Norway with the Highwaymen in the 1990s, don't remember the year. I can't say which concert was the greatest, those were three very different settings. I gotta listen to him every day though, he's like a drug!
Respond to this video... Maybe someone already mentioned this, but for those not familiar with Christianity, when Jesus was brought before Pontius Pilate, he said that he was the bearer of truth.
But maybe Pilate looked at Jesus' long hair and the cut of his clothes, and even though Jesus said he would tell the truth,Pilate looked at his long hair and clothes and asked "Quid est veritas?" (What is Truth?)
Johnny did stuff like that. We ought to listen, we might learn something!
To Aspiring Songwriters : Notice Mr. Cash's breakthrough storytelling lyrical moment. His writing frame of reference suddenly dollied the scene back as a director: "He looked down, his long hair". Not; 'clutched' or 'stroked' or 'pulled'. Only 3 words: 'his long hair". To my genius friend, Brian Mallen, and myself, in 1970, this observation was magical to us.

@alanyoung2 Thank you. Please also pray for the thousands of other Sikh widows and mothers bereft in those same few days (31. Oct - 03. Nov 1984).
