  • did you know that this guy inspired michael angelo batio to create the double guitar

  • That piano player aint bad either

  • "Hi, and welcome to jazzclub"

  • Virtuosity!

  • This man, is pure genious.

  • I'm with you brother.

  • I suppose when the list virtuoso in Websters, The have Mr. Kirk's picture.

  • Thank you for posting this video.!!!!

  • I dislike anyone that dislikes this video. Brilliant!

  • I dislike anyone that dislikes this video. Brilliant!

  • saw him at Fillmore east 1971 with Tower of Power and Santana.I was a kid who loved rock.I was leveled.Unreal night.I so dislike to say it ,but those were the days-left at 630 Am to get to my 8th grade home room and Santana was still playing while I adjusted my eyes to the morning light. What a player.

  • Brings tears to my eyes..Always caught him at the Jazz Workshop in Boston..Rahsaan was a real mensch..thank you for posting this.

  • Am I the only one that think's he looks like T-Pain?

  • Roland is the greatest multi-instrumentalist the world has ever seen- he still scares me to death, AND is also, perhaps the greatest TENOR player ever- I LOVE John Coltrane, and I'm NOT comparing- he just grooves me more- this is just a personal opinion......listen to him cut everyone on stage on the CD with Mingus at Carnegie Hall. From down in the gut-bucket clear into outer space- that's my MAN!

  • @sitarnut Yes he is. He's a "monster." He scares the other musicians to death. Art Tatum did the same thing. There's a great story I heard Hank Jones tell. He saw Tatum for the first time and had to leave. As he was walking up the stairs of the club in Buffalo, Bud Powell was going down to see Tatum for the first time as well. Hank's remark: "Don't go down there......."

  • @1967ax Man. I really dug your Art Tatum Story... bless you for your comments..the fist thing that was heard by my brother and I was 'Domino"....we were about 16 years old- Roland and Wes Montgomery changed our lives forever after that fateful day... we are still performing.

  • @sitarnut Sir, you have excellent taste. I didn't know The Rahsaan played with Mr. Montgomery. That would have been life changing for me too. Being a guitar player, I can only say that Wes humbles me. George Benson owes his career to that man. -bill charles

  • My Favorite Things @ 3:20 <3

  • God's favorite intsrument is the sax and Rahsaan is truly blessed !

    Thanks for posting this Brother!

    Peace~

  • You know when you hear Jimi Hendrix has a favorite musician, they're gonna be good.

  • named my first born after this cat!

  • Oh man, Rahsaan is awesome! and together with McCoy, Lenny and Stanley! There are no words!

  • he is the best

  • I just found out that my father, Drummer Gifford McDonald accompanied Rahsaan. May they both rest in peace

  • i.'m glad theres actual footage of this cat because i never would of believed it

  • My favorite musician hands down.

  • BOSS

  • What is that thing on his right pinky finger?

  • I saw Roland Kirk at the Village Vanguard, New Years' Eve. I think that it was 1972-3. I'll never forget the experience. Seeing this clip reminds me of just how awesome a musician he was.

  • that's awsome!

  • So fucking awesome.

  • a one man band lol

  • I saw Rahsaan Roland Kirk in a small club, in Toronto in 1975. He was absolutely amazing, and I remember being blown away. He also 'acknowledged' my 21st birthday and sang happy birthday to me! Who gets that lucky?! Very sad that he died so young.

  • @betty54545

You are one lucky lady betty

  • at some points you can hear the 2 separate saxes "phasing" in and out of each other, man roland kirk was just somethin else. amazing.

  • like Quincy said. Yes INDEED!

  • man he can play not only one saxophone but two at the same time

  • talk about multi-tasking

  • holy fucking shit man.

  • awesome. sounds lik a mix of ornette and don playing with john coltrane

  • And fuck Kenny G. For real.

  • Is there any more of him with Tyner?

  • This is my first time listening to this guy besides his flute work with Quincy on Soul Bossa Nova and In the Heat of the Night. What the fuck just happened? This is a mindfuck. I'm going to have to get this man's discography...

  • @MilesTrane21 I second that. This track hits you like a damn bomb.

  • It don't get any better than this! Blow your horn!

  • Rahsaan is the best evidence that there are indeed extraterrestrials. He's the monster of all monsters. Right there with Tatum in my opinion. He really swings out in this one. There are times where I wish he'd concentrate more on just one sax or flute, but my god, he was on fire this night. Doesn't hurt to have Mr.'s Tyner and Clarke building it for him. And he does acknowledge McCoy with that quote. I'm just in tears. Thanks for posting.

  • (we free) KING !!!!!!

  • grazie Roland, per tutto.

  • Now, that's fucking talent.

  • Wow. I bet that man could inflate a blimp.

  • at about 3:35 my head exploded

  • Thanks @Davelovesjazz for putting this on. Look close. Notice the extra Left hand pinky keys on his tenor. He also has them on his manzello(soprano saxello) for his right hand. They are there to control the lower stack of each horn. I would love to see that horn up close and make a model.

  • Just a stunning performance...and what a great band. Tyner is Tyner, and it's a pleasure to hear Clarke and White in a straight-ahead acoustic setting.

  • Number starts at 1:04 (click)

  • Bright Moments!!!

  • What a MAN!!!!!!!

  • Love the get up as well... a gift from music... what is it about blind cats and their vision??? I have everything this guy ever released its consummate...

  • THE BEST! Thanks so much for posting this! More love!

  • A god he is.

Or at least something greater than a man.

  • great, great, great !!!!!!!!

  • Another great clip from the MASTER

  • Just ain't nothing like the real thing and it being real!

Rashaan Roland Kirk--deep path-maker. "New comers" (elevator music psyche, smooth jazz enthusiasts) get lost/worried, give up, & call it "all good"--enough: a form of the fabled "sour grapes"!

  • Comment removed

  • RAHSAAN ! THE MASTER !

  • absolutely incredible...

  • Tyner is the man!

  • This rocks... one of the most underrated musicians in jazz. And what a band!

  • legend

  • I love Kirks version of Bill Withers "Ain't No Sunshine" I wish we could get a video of that on here.

  • really awesome!!!

  • I remember seeing this on pbs, great memories. Thanks for this posting.

  • Thank you, thank you, thank you

  • such good circular breathing!! appreciate that, youtubers

  • I should get some Rahsaan Roland Kirk.

  • Oh My!

  • O.o in love

  • he truly mastered circular breathing techniques....incredible and legendary!

  • amazing musicians

  • wow

  • thanks youtube

    thanks dave loves jazz

  • is one fuking genius

  • just extraordinary!

  • Dang! I had just turned legal and had tix to see him at the Jazz Workshop in Beantown and he up and died from a heart attack. DANG DANG DANG one of muy only regrets in this life is never having seen the Late Great Rashaan Roland Kirk live and in person.

  • Niiiiiiiice!

  • my god the man plays the entire show with circular breathing

  • @boombox1177 you should see his other video. he dont breath at all

  • @boombox1177 that's what makes jazz music so popular and unique, its individuality.

  • 1969 I saw Kirk perform in a small LA nightclub 3 times, sat in the front row 5 feet away from him each night, Kirk's live performances were otherworldy, best live jazz show ever. You queers may now ask me questions about how wonderful it was.

  • truly a jazzzz genieus i love his skills

  • Incredible !

  • Fuck ... Continuous circular breathing ... Shit man.

  • I've loved Roland Kirk since I was a little kid. I'd love to hear him play bag pipes.

  • lol

  • @JeddTyler bag pipes are for those that cannot circular breath, in other words, the anti-Rahsaan Roland Kirk.

  • Anyone noticed he plays the melody of my favorite things on 3:20

  • his little dedication to trane :-)

  • That's some of the best circular breathing I've ever seen.

  • I actually saw this when it was on television. Astounding and inspiring.

  • Oh my god! I have just discovered this beatiful mad genius

    Danke, thank you, gracias!!!

  • Arrrggghh quel pied...et avec Mc coy en plus...ah les cons ça c'est de la zic....wouuuuaaaaiiissss...

  • if this guy told me he was an alien... i'd relly have to think about it...so cool, reminds me of Sun Ra. McCoy is rockin' in the yellow turtleneck!

  • This is the best evidence that there are aliens on this planet, because humans simply cannot do what this guy could do. The end is absolutely unbelievable. Pure magic, a genius.

  • The first time I heard "We Free Kings" I was hooked. He was a mad genius!

  • A great GREAT musician, unparallelled musicality.

  • Wonderful...TTTHHHAAANNNKKKSSS!!!

  • As long as you got some attention, I'm sure that's all that matters. Like a five year old.

  • What a great video----this man was the master of his own power jazz-----he was a musical shaman and there may never be another like him.......woooooooooooooooow

  • he really got the circular breathing down, when i hear this brotha i ask myself "how in the f**k can you top that?!

  • I think that if I could do circulatory breathing I would die a happy man.

  • This was my first TREASURE find when I worked in a mom & pop music store in Macon, GA... When I found "Bright Moments", I swear I did not listen to any other music for 3 months!!! RIP Rahsaan! We love YOU!

  • THE MASTER.

  • 何これ、アメリカの番組をあまり知らないけれど、pがマッコイだなんてビックリしました。豪華メンバーですね。

  • Awesome work from a true giant of jazz..

  • this is called circular breathing, you breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth at virtually the same time, meaning you dont get breathless, but it takes training

  • Where are these gods today?

  • this is why Lenny White said on the the recent RTF tour that REAL music needs to come back....this is what he was talking about :0)

  • Wow, Roland's horns with McCoy's piano, what a combination!! Did they record much together? This is fantastic

  • wow...another one of these super clips you won't find anywhere else...thanks!

  • Some of you good folks just discovering this. All my love to you.

  • this is flat out incredible.

  • oh shit..this dude is deep..

  • original! I am proud to be named after such a great man

  • super music, super guys

  • Maan this lineup should have made an album!

the only problem with roland kirk is that if one plays with him like for example a sax player it's an imposseble situation i mean imagine:

you're standing there with a single sax and this guy plays 3 or 4 what can one put in a solo after roland kirk?

  • Awesome musicians! Incredible talent right there.

  • What a lineup... this is awesome.

  • Lo único malo del video es McCoy Tyner :(

  • WHAT?

  • Masterful! With thx!

  • circulatory breathing.... wow

    i don't see how it's done

  • From Wiki: "The person inhales fully and begins to exhale and blow. When the lungs are nearly empty, the last volume of air is blown into the mouth, and the cheeks are inflated with this air. Then, while still blowing this last bit of air out by allowing the cheeks to deflate, the person must very quickly fill the lungs by inhaling through the nose prior to running out of the air in the mouth."

  • Who's the piano player? He plays like McCoy Tyner!...

  • ...he is McCoy.

  • it is McCoy Tyner

  • Q maestro!!Unico!!

  • Damn. I never heard of this guy until today. Sometimes I think I know music but then I am humbled by some one like this.

  • Roland at his blowing best, a real one-man wall of sound. Many thanks Dave

  • IT WOULD BE SICK IF HE WAS RTF!

  • black master of black classical music..

  • Why does it have to matter that he was black? Some of the greatest jazz musicians were black, but were also white, hispanic, asian, etc. See past the race, this is 2009. Roland Kirk was a great musician. Period.

  • I didn't say it dipshit, quincy said it at the beginning but i have to say i agree..

  • I'm glad you were so mature about it.

  • Right on.

  • to be introduced by Quentin Jones is quite an honor just shows how Ronland Kirk is so crazy.

  • *Roland

  • Quincy

  • I just fell in love. Wow.

  • it's gotta be the hat. what other explanation is there?

    seriously, this is great.

  • my mind is blown.

  • wow. I can barely play one saxophone in tune. He is absolutely amazing.

  • the guy is a bag pipe!!!!!

  • i love the props to trane at about 3:20

  • The whole tune is basically props to Trane...modality at its best. I have and always will love modal music to harmonic

  • Mainly because McCoy is playing on this one. Even if he were playing the most straight-ahead, bebop song, it would sound like some insane modal masterpiece. :D

Anyway, I'm not even that big of a dude on jazz, but I recognize everyone playing on this video, just by looking at them. This video is amazing. 5/5, favorit'd.

  • Rahsaan was something else. By TODAYS mainstream standards he was the anti-jazz musician. Raw, edgy, adventurous, powerful. Black genius personified!!

  • i remember seeing this on tv in 75, same effect, incredible, i was a fan before i saw this and always thought how fantastic it was for all to see this man pour it out live......listen, listen......listen to his tune......

  • A--MA--ZING

    !!!!!!!!!!!

  • Saw him years ago in D.C. Will never forget it! A master.

  • Just wonderful.....the first time I've seen Rahsaan on screen....and McCoy on piano....is that Elvin too? Inspiring stuff.

  • Lenny White.. That would be pretty cool if Elvin was drumming though I don't think it would sound like that.

  • Thanks for that man....this is a great band. Rahsaan was the real deal, he was very much of the tradition and cutting edge at the same time.

  • And I always thought, circular breathing was just a myth

  • can you imagine how cool it is to be introduced by mister Jones himself?

even not as a flowerpot i'd be pleased!!

rashan is the man, not only he is technically exceptionnal and unique (circular breathing and all...), but he did delivered original and beautiful music, just as mccoy tyner, john coltrane or christian vander.

  • One of the most mind blowing performances I've ever witnessed.

  • Rahsaan rules!

  • You said it!!

Talk about a power, all-star line-up: Check out this quartet!!

  • Could it be possible that two completely different artists from entirely different genres of music could BOTH still be good? No, never...

Open your ears and your mind, or you'll never truly understand what music is all about.

  • wow!!!!!!!!

  • this shit be so ill

  • our sax player does the circular breathing thing, kindve amazing

  • Agreed!

  • excellent..

  • circlular breathing amazingness.

  • One of the masters of the century.. along with Ellington, Coltrane, Miles, and a lot of other American composers like Hank Williams and Copeland.

  • Coltrane-ophile.

  • Some nice jazz ( i was linked by jonny)

  • circuler motion bb rubb it =]
