I freaking LOVED this band and saw them several times here in Los Angeles. I was crazy about Ramona :) Met them once and remember Jane being super nice. Such a fantastic band!
I've taken the liberty of fixing the sound on this and submitted it as a response. It took quite a lot of work as the VHS seems to be running at about 97.5% the speed of the original. So I had to spend hours cutting and tweaking to make it work. This song has been in my all time top ten since I was a kid so it was very much a labour of love. Sadly YoutTube have 'detected third party content' on mine and slapped an advert on it :( Hope you don't mind :)
@hufclufc Haha - did it actually get stopped? It was before my time but I remember all the excitement at school on the Monday. Hereford V RAF lads from Credenhill. I think it made front page of local paper and council never allowed any more gigs! That is over 30 years ago now!
Saw them twice over here in the States ... at the Cuckoo's Nest in Costa Mesa and then the following year at Perkins Palace in Pasadena (California). Loved this band ... had a huge crush on Ramona. Talked to them outside the Cuckoo's Nest, they were so fun. Still have all their records!
Brilliant. Got a copy of this lurking in a box in the garage somewhere. Ramona is now head of a sixth form? Wish I went there. Mind you, questions would be asked.
omg its ms wilkins my head of sixth form also used to be my french teacher, she still dances exactly the same lol i h8 her but this had renewed my love for her :D
@angelhair0 Well, aren't you the semantic one... It is rare because (a) I have the only physical copy of this (b) until I put it up on YouTube no-one had seen it in 30-years. I think that counts as rare...
@whereitsattv i wasn't trying to be a dick. i understand the vhs is extremely rare. you're right, it was a comment on semantics. the term "rare" is so bastardized on the internet these days. i don't even think people know what it means anymore. i just meant the video that is posted on youtube isn't rare because it's public and not tangible. pointless post, i guess.
I saw a pic of the Magna Carta on the internet. As it's so common, I thought I'd pick one up as a decorative poster. Unfortunately, by the time I got to the newsagent, they were out of stock. Still, he tells me he's expecting a delivery on Tuesday.
Forward with it too. So come and visit, Then kiss it, like only lovers do! I'm not dumb, I'm on the run for someone sweet and tasty. Young men always turn my head, And can't help acting hasty. Now it's said, it's straight to bed, No need to make it harder. I believe in plenty of nice things to stock my larder. I'm a bit weird, you know, Young men always turn my head. Come and be my number one!
Smile so sweetly, so completely, dazzle everyone. A smile like yours should be on show, oh gosh it's such good fun. And there's a lot of other things about you that I like, The only thing that's lacking a 1000cc bike. Don't be stupid, don't be limp, No girl likes to love a wimp. Dance and make fun, nicely done Come and be my number one. Your arse is tight, And moves alright, Your eyes are big and blue. And if I was a homely girl I'd like to marry you. But I'm naughty, sweet and haughty,
Oh man, I haven't heard this in ages. Somewhere, I still have an old mix cassette I made from about this time period with this song, Lene Lovich's "Lucky Number", the B52s' instrumental version of "52 Girls", and a lot of Specials and Bodysnatchers on it. As teenagers we used to do 60s dances to stuff like this - the pony, the jerk, the monkey, the frug, etc. Was fun.
Remembering seeing them live on 1st LP tour and I think they played this song twice as they ran out of songs for the encores. Fun band but I'd call them more New Wave than punk. Plus didn't they have some odd Swiss connection.
Rembering seeing them live on 1st LP tour and I think they played this song twice as they ran out of songs for the encores. Fun band but I'd call them more New Wave than punk. Plus didn't they have some odd Swiss connection.
WOW! LOVE THIS and bought it when it came out when I was about 13. Had lots of pictures of Ramona on my wall - I loved her! Jane (with the funny eyebrows) was married to Woody from Madness and used to work in my local hairdressers - she was ace.
@pollmeister i've just realised that for the past three years, i've worked with Ramona on a daily basis! - we work in a school in Enfield - completely shocked me when i found out she was in The Mo-Dettes...
Convergence, sayeth the Lord of Pop and then it was so. Surfer guitar, "syncopated rhythm," sexy punker chicks, a song that still commands attention...
Where did you hide the time machine and is it still functional? London Calling, indeed!
Another gem for youtube. I had the album but never really got into it, I liked the Rezillos and B52s better. But this is great! Should have got shown at the time, instead of all those rubbish videos made by those two blokes out of 10cc.
Great bass, great guitar, great drumming, great lyrics, great vocals and after all these years I find out a great video too! The music establishment was resentful of punk/sex pistols/MalcolmMclaren and so bands like the Mo-Dettes, who should have been on Top of the Pops, were ignored by prime time radio/TV. The media then was controlled by Alan Partridge types like Noel Edmonds. A damn shame.
Cracking stuff - can't get enough fo the video - its rough quality is its charm, I think.... Got The Story So Far a while ago. Great ideas and songs let down by the production, but still worth having all the same.
My 12/13 year old self was a huge Mo-dettes fan and thirty years later I have got to admire my younger self's taste...musically they were so so tight and had such an infectious sense of groove. The irony is, if they had come from New York they would be talked about in the same hushed tones of reverence reserved for ESG & Liquid Liquid.....my personal favourite is their cover of Paint It Black, file under genius! Thanks for sharing the video, ahh the days of U-matic, Betamax and VHS!
Always among my favorite songs from the late 1970s. A creative coming together of UK, US, and French performers. I still have the ad announcing their appearance on the Sunset Strip in Hollywood and one of the very first broadcast of White Mice in LA on KXLU's Stella radio show. Marvelous, swinging number.
This is BRILLIANT!!! I've had this song stuck in my head for years and never knew who did it! They used to play this on the college station that invented the concept of college station - KUSF in San Francisco - around 1981. This song always epitomized English new wave to my then 14 year old ears. Thanks so much for putting this up! Why weren't these girls more famous when the Gogo's made it big?!

@normanby100 So, you're telling us that you're basically a phony kind of person then, right? Just asking dude.

I have all the other lyrics, but can't work out the line that Ramona speaks to camera at 2:33 to 2:36.
Any ideas?

Thanks, KT (I presume that you're the actual Kate Korus), for solving my 30-year-old mystery of the lyrics.
Without your help, I would never have been able to work out that first line that Ramona speaks.
Cheers!

Great video of one of my favourite tunes.
Heard John Peel play this thirty years ago, and had to rush out and buy the 7" single (still have it).
Didn't realise how cute Ramona Carlier was. How sexy does she look in this video? (Great dancer, as well).
