  • It's a goddamn music video for a goddamn song, for Chrissake, she's not singing about a damn city, she's singing about people, this isn't a damn documentary, just listen to the damn song

  • Mexico city is not even a desert, is one of the largest cities in the world,

and for all the people who din't even know Mexico city in mainly in the top off an ancient Lake, and all the vegetacion around it is forest and not desert

  • Nice song!

  • She looks like Elaine from Seinfeld. Love this song.

  • beautiful song!

  • que este trozo de mierda?

  • @PacoMxxN this comment is retarded

  • No sé si entienden que GUATEMALA no es parte de México...

  • Such a pretty voice.

  • Des-cierto que ella canta de la ciudad, y inciertas las emociones de esta texana. Pero canta bonita.

  • @inturn23 It was a joke. People need to lighten up and stop thinking they can save the world. Once people realize that the world is everyones to live in, they will realize they have just grown up and will be a much happier person. Michigan is nice too. Unless you're in Flint or DET.

  • what kind of guitar is she playing?????

  • @LaurenAlyseLive Its an epiphone emperor. You can see it better in other videos.

  • @mbs1420 well it looks like an epiphone emperor, didnt mean to sound official about it.

  • what kind of guitar is she playing?????

  • what kind of guitar is she playing?????

  • the living and the dead...

  • on that long hard road....

  • @miStiKredum Why dont you actually listen to the song, maybe, just maybe youll understand the video. ;]

  • hipsters and their whines..

  • marie muldaire,?

  • fuck this. I love Jolie Holland. I hate this music video with a passion, fuck old timey bullshit. take this shit back to art school

  • Now about that song..I can't say much, but thanks for thinking of Mexico. I don't know if she is singing or moaning. but the customs in the video are decent... JAJAJA..Yea..I love both countries USA and Mexico... And I wish some day all the bad things that happens on the border and inside of this two countries are finished..This two are involved as much as the other in many ways.. so I hope some day everything is fixed and all right.... Viva Mexico!! as well as USA!!..

  • this is awesome!

  • @inturn23 Unless you live in Juarez Mexico. Take notice of the UNLESS. I didn't judge a whole nation on one thing, you jumped to a conclusion. New York is nice, UNLESS you live in Harlem. You're an idiot.

  • joshua tree.

  • little creepy in the end but special;))

  • @yasemeolvido1988 Unless you live in Juarez Mexico, then you get raped and killed before you can live.

  • @coonlferous ummm ok how narrow. I could say the same thing about Harlem New York. Are you seriously going to judge an entire nation over one city?

  • I like the song

but she looks like Elaine from Seinfeld in this video

I like her with red hair better

  • @wolfchimneyrock Get....OUT (pushes Jerry across kitchen)

  • @wolfchimneyrock Most people prefer the red hair, but young girls like to experiment...give her time.

  • I LIKE THIS VIDEO

  • i love MEXICO too!!!!!!!

  • all of m life I grew up with my and I say again MY mexican neighbors I , I say MY BROTHERS we are the same thank you all

  • very interesting video...i love mexico too!!

  • how long was she with the be good tanyas?

  • Muy bonita voz

  • This has nothing to do with the city.

  • Great song. I love her voice.

  • Mexico city is NOT in the DESERT... I wish they made songs about Buenos Aires.. :o(

  • @yukieutsumi verdad

  • Tis about respect and rememberance...lovely.

    Cheers!

  • what kind of accent is she speaking english with??

  • a southern accent, she's from texas, i think

  • @markus3669 she doesn't speak with the accent; only sings with the southern, country accent

  • good voice. very pretty

  • I think jolie holland would do better singing jazz or blues

heard her from sage francis' song got up this morning. She sounded way better in the song

  • She was so fucken sexy in that Sage Francis vid. you're right.

  • music- Ok

    video- Boooorrring

  • Other way round!!

  • I realy love this song thank you I hope that it gives inspiration to the future of our great world in peace

  • this is the time where diversity is so in question do we as a human race want to define one culture over another I say not we are a people of a planet togather why do we fight the differences you say good for all as I say good for all where is this so divide

  • If you google 'opbmusic', a music station in Portland, then click on 'Performances' then 'Jolie Holland', there's an interview where Jolie explains what the song is about - weird story - Mexico City is just where the character in the song died (I think...).

  • haha nice vid : ) don't care about the desert , listen the music ,,, I must say the environment here in mexico city is really hot ,,, anyway ,, good song

  • Don´t be stupids!

this song has nothing to do with Mexico city , is just a reference , what she´s trying to do is to talk about the death and the living , giving mexico city as a reference because of " dia de los muertos " day, she never says " IM WALKING DOWN TROUGH MEXICO CITY SHITY STREETS, SINGING LA LA LA " right?

forget about the song´s name, this is music.

    i really liked it anyway.

    Peace!

  • right, If she'd mentioned the word "Shitty " she most likely would be talking about Detroit..

  • WTF is this Mexico city is sooo not a desert!

  • definitly awful video..... make no sense

  • que tiene que ver un decierto con la ciudad de México?

  • lo mismo que tiene que ver la palabra "decierto" con "Desierto"... nada...

  • jaja

  • the song is great, but the video is awful!

  • I'd never noticed the Julia Louis Dreyfus resemblance before! Funny! Anyway, good song, good video. I love her first couple albums even more than this one, but there is too much talent here not to expect more greatness to come.

  • she means to a mexican hollyday called "dia de los muertos" something like "dead people 's day" and it's very traditional here in mexico! we used to celebrate every november 2nd doing things kind of similar to what appear in the video!

  • I believe the quality of her music has been in inverse relationship to her weight. Catalpa is just an amazing album. Each one gets more and more pop.

  • Comment removed

  • I remember the first time I heard this song... she is talking about the day of the death...

  • the reason y they said its in Mexico City is cuz holloween (dia de los muertos) is a mexican holiday jeeeezzooo!!!!!

  • @obc993

Halloween and El Día de los Muertos are actually pretty different, and celebrated in different days; Halloween it's on October, whereas Dead's Day is on November 2nd

    Greetings.

  • God I adore this song, she just gets better and better. I had no idea there was a video... wow.

  • This video WAS in fact shot in Joshua Tree, CA

  • What kind of accent does he have?

    She has candeus (candles).

  • wow, that Julia Louis-Dreyfus sure can sing!

  • Haha, I know, right? Vintage Jolie Holland - 20 lbs unnecessarily lost + black hair dye = Julia Louis Dreyfus?? Still a good song though.

  • que dice esta pendeja? ya quisiera tener nuestra cultura...

  • video is like Fando & Lis but w/o the old women betting over-ripe peaches for man-slave or paraplegic-human-blood drinking doctors...actually that would make better video!

  • gran concierto hoy en bilbao!!! vaya crack!!!

  • Just to clarify this...She's not saying she's in Mexico city...She's in texas..She said she came back from Mexico city to northern Texas.

Solo para aclarar las cosas..Ella no dice que eso es la ciudad de Mexico...Dice que acaba de llegar de la ciudad de Mexico, y esta en el norte de Tejas.

  • LIES!

There are no joshua trees in TX! This video obviously for East Coast idiots who don't know any better. Those fools can live this lie!

  • ya sabemos que no es mejico city, y que cojones importa donde sea , pareceis gilipollas.

  • Ha ha ha ha Mexico City?

Im mexican and I was born in Mexico City. I would call this video: "Halloween in the desert" NOTHING TO DO WITH OUR CULTURE.

  • fucking ignorants

mexico city its not a deserti. its like los angeles or tokyo.

and mexico city its not in GUATEMALA.

  • ignorant: lacking knowledge or information as to a particular subject or fact. Example:

"REVOSYS006YTU is ignorant because he doesn't know that Los Angeles is a desert. He is ignorant of music and can't listen to lyrics and realize that this video doesn't take place in Mexico City. He is ignorant of visual story telling so if he sees a word on a suitcase he can only assume that is where the scene is supposed to take place. Mexico City is the worlds largest city. This is a beautiful song.

  • Los Angeles is not a desert--it is classified as a Mediterranean climate under the Kopen climate classification system.

Tokyo is the world's most populous city if one looks at the metro level; Mexico city is ranked #9. For a city proper, the largest city is Mumbai, India; Mexico city is ranked #10.

  • Can you please provide the sources for this info. Last time I checked Mexico was 3rd as a city and 2nd as a meteo area.

  • Many moons ago, a wise man came down from the hills and said unto man: "go waste your lives editing a free online encyclopaedia." Your mission, mirx (if you choose to accept it), is to find that encyclopaedia.

  • You are right but Mexico City is the bigest urban aglomeration.

  • The lyric say "I'm just back from Mexico city" not that she is in Mexico city. "I came back north to Texas to rest my weary head"

  • mexico city a deset?haha no no no

mexico city is the 8 city most rich in the world!! you this video is a LIE!

mexico city is one great city!!

  • IT IS MEXICO OR NOT ? :D

  • I don't know exactly but it could be, I'm sure this place is not at Mexico City, Mexico City isn't inside a desert.

but the place in the video could be at the north of Mexico or south of USA

and believe me the folklore in the "Día de los Muertos" it's only Mexican I love it!

  • Joshua Tree, CA

  • VIVA MEXICO!! jeje! :D

  • Great Song, M. Ward and Marc Ribot play with her on this album. Who f-n cares if it's Mexico City or not? Just listen to the music. She has a beautiful soulful voice.

  • I posted a video response so She can see Mexico city is not Palmdale California.

  • this girl kicks complete ass...'nuff said

  • Is this Mexico? que hombre?

  • This obviously isn't Mexico City, but maybe is the desert of Sonora or Durango.

  • Palmdale, the high desert in california, north L.A. county. Most desert scenes are shot there.

  • I can not understand the text but I like the song and the movie.

  • fuck you mother fucker

  • Hahaha, that's true!

  • Yeah I reckon. I heard a few English words... The rest sounded like she forgot the words and was trying to fill in the gaps or something...

  • Je t'adore, jolie Jolie!

  • It's obviously Elaine from Seinfeldt. And she's obviously brilliant :D

  • naaah it can't be her

  • i know...this is like a strange combination of a patty griffin music video done during "impossible dream" and a dia de los muertos episode of seinfeld.

i do love jolie though. she's fantastic.

  • jaja mexico city nada q ver!!xD jaja q onda cual se fumo

  • she's so purty

  • Getting the words now 1st thought it was delivering on a debt now its the living and the dead. Will have to listen careful. Grew up on dylan so it wont take long! cant believe I have missed this classic

  • wow! Jolie beautiful song thank you you cheered me up.

  • lol I never saw Mexico city in this video. It's really funny how Holliwood is always trying to undermine Mexico. Like in the movie "Pistolero"

Americans are jealous that we have the world's largest city, Mexico City.

  • listen to the lyrics.

  • Yep. There are lots of American's running across the border into Mexico.

  • Not only are there illegals returning due to the crisis but many white Americans with ties in Mexico are already here(in Mexico) competing for jobs. They may not make as much but then you need less to make it down here. Once you find something half decent here, the quality of life due to less stress is a better and a happier one than in the U.S. I live in Culiacan and I ask othr Americans and Europeans here if they have suffered any crimes or if they are afraid, they say Nope we love it here.

  • I agree. I'm from Australia but I travelled through the U.S. and Mexico, and if I had to live in any other country I would live in Mexico. I felt safe in Mexico City, I felt safe in Chiapas. In the U.S.A. every 5 minutes someone with gold jewelry would ask me for money and tell me how shit their life is. The U.S.A. is the most paranoid, stressed out, angry place I've ever been to. Mexicans are much more relaxed and friendly. As soon as I get the cash I'm goin back to Mexico, best place ever :)

  • I´m glad you have liked the Mexico City and Chiapas. I'm Mexican and I'm very proud of my country. really expected to return soon. mexico is a wonderful place to live. believe me, you will need years to see how wonderful it is.

    VIVA MEXICO!!!!

  • @yasemeolvido1988

Do you think Mexican people are nicer than Americans. Most of the Mexican people I've known are always smiling and joking and singing and stuff. But then you hear about all these really terrible crimes down there. So I don't know.

  • @ar4216 The Mexican News should do the same things as the USA News... hide everything from people...clean up the mess and say nothing about it... thus they can live in the same dream land as the Americans do..lol... I live in USA the dream land.. I am sure of it.. and believe me, I never seen so much crime, racism, hatred, careless people, evil people, and idiotism in one place... Of course, there are problems everywhere!!! and the USA and any other country just cannot scape to that...sorry..

  • It looks more like the outskirts of Palmdale California in the High Desert..

Los Angels is larger in area than Mexico city and doesn't Yakarta have a larger Population?

  • lol...where are you getting your facts from?

  • THAT IS NOT MEXICO CITY !

  • Comment removed

  • play this at my funeral thanks

  • She looks more than a bit like Elaine Benez with that hairdo. Yowza.

  • you are from Argentina no from germany , liar

  • Mexicans are FIRST CLASS PEOPLE!!!! be sure about that...those who may feel superior can kiss my ass...

  • thats not mexico city theres no deserts in there and I know from experience, mexico city is just a regular suburba n city like new york or los angeles i don't know where the got this desert from

  • Well, you're right about that. It isn't Mexico city. Those are joshua trees in the video, which are plentiful in the high desert of Southern California. Maybe that's where this video was filmed (?).

  • gut video und lied, ich liebe Mexico.begrüßen aus Deutchland Mexico hermoso pais.

    (saludos von Alemania)

  • no tak. sami nacjonalisci!

  • this is awesome. i love jolie

  • weisst du alter, egal was du sagst oder was du denkst oder was du hier in youtube schreibts, du wirst die Geschichte der Welt nicht ändern weil du ein "niemand" bist, wegen Leute wie du Deutschland hat so einen schlechten Ruf in der ganze Welt.

  • why would you say that? i mean i'm also canadian, but i have nothing against mexicans or any other race for that matter... what could a mexican have done to you to say such a thing? or is it just ignorance of their culture? i mean i'm sure there is people out there who would want nothing else than to kill you, your family, and friends but they act for the same reasons that you so easly insult these people. someday you will see what i mean and it will be to late i assure you that much...

  • I can tell you, the most racist, intolerant, xenophobic, hatred people appears on youtube comments

  • chinga tu putísima madre, canadiense de porquería, ojalá te mueras del sida que te contagió tu perra madre por cojértela por el culo, maricón de mierda. fuck your stinking piece of shit mother.

  • hey alex i just wanted to apologize for the way that other guy insulted your country, and wanted to tell you that He does not represent all canadians. Mexicans are great people, and i have been in mexico several times while traveling the world. Sadly racism still exists and there are people out there that cant accept others just for what they are, human beings. So again, sorry...

  • wow over react much!!!!! it a song!!!! about a mexican holiday

  • Comment removed

  • According to Jolie's MySpace blog (her first blog!), the video was shot in Joshua Tree, CA. But I think the song's only called Mexico City because the person it's 'about', Joan Vollmer, died there. Curiously, before that she lived in Texas, then New Orleans, where Jolie's from... Spooky, huh?

  • that looks like it was film in arizona part of the united states wich soon to be a 3rd world county thanks to bush

  • Alright, so it's Joshua Tree - California not Mexico - but it's not geography, it's ART. Like, everybody knows the moon landings were shot in a studio - you don't actually have to GO THERE. :)

Seriously though, it's Jolie's first video, give her a break, it's beautiful.

  • take it easy man, you might just hurt ones feelings!

  • That was unnecessary.

  • Cool song and music.

But, I don't understand the association with Mexico City.....

The landscape looks more like South US, but nothing remotly to the fabulous Mexico City.

For those who had not traveled to that part of the world, check on some of MY FAVORITES if you'd like to see why I had fallen in love with that wonderful country.

    Happy travel....

  • what are talking about dude? texas, california, new mexico, arizona and nevada is MEXICO!

  • no it isn't it's American

  • No it's mexico

  • terrorist shut up they don't own it's U.S.A

  • ke no mame esto no es de la cd de mexico pinche puta

  • This isn't about Mexico City, it's about a dream about Joan Vollmer, William Burroughs' 'wife'. 'Jack and Edie' are Jack Kerouac and his first wife, Edie Parker; 'Julie and Billy' were Joan Vollmer's children. Joan Vollmer was shot in the head and killed by William Burroughs in Mexico City. Still doesn't tell you what the song is about, but it's not about Mexico City.

  • Mexico city is NOT like this. DUH. noooo :´( no no no no no

  • She is not descripting mexico.. shilly!!

  • NO ONE said this video was FILMED in mexico city. i dont think cities in third world countries are even as remote as a desert.

  • I love this video so much! The song is wonderful and I can't stop watching this. So beautiful!

  • Visit méxico city if you want to know about this country, Mexico City has the best and the worst of the country, and you will have a new perception about Mexico, for anyone is bad, but many europeans love Mexico city
