  • jesyou shold post more often in irish and english

  • I dig gaelic! I'm Scottish but was never taught Gaelic. Wish i was because i would use it all the time, despite what English people thought of it.

  • @TheRainbowRapest i dont like kittens so i dont care <3 x x haha

  • scottish people wear kilts not irish

  • @jayoplaysmajor

If you ever see someone in Scotland wearing a kilt then they are either at a wedding or it's a tourist.

  • @Cathain78 I see where you are coming from, but it's not strictly true. I know a few people who would wear a kilt everyday if they could, i am from the Highlands so it's probably more common to wear a kilt round here, everywhere else has Anglo influences. I personally would wear a kilt if my balls did'nt freeze. It's hella cold here with a kilt lol.

  • to furellix

SCOTTISH PEOPLE wear kilts formaly, not irish.

  • thank you

  • Dia Duit connas ata tu??Ta me ina conai i mbaile atha cliath ( sorry about the speling im only in first year so im not amazing at spelling:L :L)

  • Thanks for uploading this video- it sounds very beautiful how you speak :)

  • meehcan somebody rescue mehh from my loneliness really bored today

  • Ich bin ein Dubliner.

    Slainte.

  • hi. i have a question u can help me out with,, what is ur fone number

  • i live in ireland and irish sucks so bad! im in an all irish secondary school and learning stuff through irish is a BITCH!

its nice to know the language but having to do school through the language is ridiculous!

Pog mo thoin!!! ta tu cach homogneasach!!!

  • crap you will get more points in your leaving cert when you finish and a better chance of getting a degree if you intend to do it. when you leave ireland you will regret it i swear when u meet peopl from ireland abroad you'll want to talk only in irish and nothing else

  • ceart go loir colini.

  • haha tá mé ar mo Ríomhaire anois! ca bhuil tú na eire? (did i say that right?:where are you in ireland?)

  • these fucks are so sinister- they actually had her say "terrorknowledgy" on my Rubescube- ts'okay- they'll swing.

  • There are several words in Irish relating to "up"

    Suas

    Anuas

    Uas

Uas seems to be a root. Jessica could perhaps explain

  • why is Irish nothing whatsoever like Welsh? I mean, not even slightly like Welsh

  • Why is Japanese nothing like Korean or Chinese? Polish and German? Different languages. The few words of Gaelic (Scorish) were similar to Gaeilge (Irish) and as far as I know its the only language with any similarity.

  • But Jap/Kor Ger/Pol don't constantly go on about being brothers fellow celts etc, some ppl think Wel/Irish would be like Spa/Por or Pol/Cz but they're not

  • mm- well the frigates are gone now

  • Maith thú Jessica. Bail ó Dhia ar an obair!

  • Funny to see that the ones bagging Gaeilge are always the ones who can't speak it. It's nowhere near dead, in fact it is having a huge revival around the world. To many from other countries, hearing Irish fluently spoken sounds pretty awesome and unique and the thought passes through the mind "why are the Irish bothering with English when the can speak this??!"...then you hear the whining of the lazy Irish schoolie and it is understood why.

  • Dunno y ppl have dissed your request, seems perfectly reasonable to me! If it's of any interest to you the Welsh for this is

gwrthddisefydliadyddiaeth (final a ommmited in S Wales dialect)

  • Thought 'Suas' meant 'Up'

  • suas is indeed up but uaslódáil is used for upload.

  • Excellent tutorial. Thank you. Great link.

  • pog mo thon :)

  • Dear JesJes1, Is there an easy way to make á é í ó ú Á É Í Ó Ú in a PC keyboard with the Alt key are there any other shortcuts for typing in Irish ? I'm just a begginer. b"zero"dhran (b0dhran)

  • If you were Irish you would be able to spell Irish, and you would know that most Irish people do not know these terms as Gaeilge.

  • Hey i'm irish and she still speaks it way better than me

  • how do i say pwnage?

btw i'm from dublin ;) my irish is boloxs

  • lol me too go south of dublin!!!!!

  • pwnage isnt a word

  • For budding gaelgeoiri, you can get a 12,000 word English to Irish translator for your mobile phone just text the word 'focal' to 53503, in Ireland, or to 82222 in the UK.

  • l rate me 1-10 1

  • how do i say sniping?

  • Jesjes, I can't believe you've got over a quarter million views.

    Iontach ar fad.

  • Keyboard, hard drive, software, mouse none of these are Greek.

We also use Greek and Latin derrived words. The main reason for thinking about the new words is that it is a smaller linguistic community.

  • is cur amu ama e seo

  • Hi! Kelly O'Behan here, with a few questions..

How do the Irish, in general, feel about people who wear kilts every day? I know they're often worn in a formal fashion..

And, How do the Irish feel about Americans? My Grandparents, on both sides of the family, moved from Ireland to the US.. but i'm the only member of my family who wants to speak Gaeilge, wear a kilt, and listen to traditional Irish song..

  • Kilts are more a scottish thing. I cant tell you how Irish feel about it. PERSONALLY, I like them... good strong wind... oh yah.

Again, I cant tell you how the irish feel about ameriance. I wouldnt worry about itanyway.

  • @Jesjes1

how do you say " I am of Irish descent " in Gaelic ?

    THANX !!!

  • @theSTAR70

"Is Gael me" or the more old fashioned - "Gaelach is ea me"

  • lol we dont wear kilts

  • @Furellix yeah we dont wear kilts here lad and id reckon even the scots would thing ya were well weird if ya wore one around the whole time like

  • Your videos are always helpful. Thanks much.

  • Is amadan mé.

  • i thought amadan is fool lol so does da mean im a fool ??lol :)

  • sá

  • irish has over 20,000 native speakers which means thay learn it first instead of english.

noone seems to want to put up proper curse words here so i may as well give it a go...

  • charadochroi, more and more young people speak Welsh in Wales these days, and of course it's taught in schools, does Gaelic have a similar profile in the Republic?

  • it didnt occur to me that there was any1 speaking irish on you tube. i dont kno any1 else in dublin who speaks irish so i have noone to speak it with!! thanx for the video and ignore all those idiots. to put some thing right: a dead language is a language where all the native speakers have died out and the language can only be learned from writing.

  • Could you make a video, when you have time, about the Irish terms for the different members of a family please? Like brother, sister, etc.

  • déarthair = brother

    deirfiúr = sister

    athair = father

    máthair = mother

eg. tá déarthair amháin agam. i have one brother.

  • Dearthair-Brother

    Deirfuir-Sister

    Mathair-Mother

    Athair-Father

  • Fís iontach. Stór focal simplí agus úsáideach don úsáideoir YouTube.

Ba chóir do cuile duine físeanna a dhéanamh i nGaeilge

    ----

Great video. A nice simple and useful set of wrods for YouTube users.

Everyone should be making videos in Irish.

  • Aontaim go hiomlan!

  • GRMA

  • Failte.

  • Tá d'obair an tábhachtach don teanga. Mile buiochas

  • how old are you? 10? i didn't know a language could have a sexual preference. but let's humour the thought. since your very own name is in irish; that must mean you're gay? you just dug yourself a into a hole you clown.

  • Dia dhuit

  • go h-iontach jesjes! go raibh maith agat.

  • These are great videos ! I like your subtitles both in Irish and phonetic spelling plus the close up of your pretty young face showing me how to pronounce these strange words. It's going to be very helpful to me in my quest to learn to sing some Irish songs. -- HH

  • i know all about that story and seriously, from éiriú to ireland?

  • "Go mbeire an diabhal leis thú" - May the Devil take you with him

"Go n-ithe na péisteoga thú" - May the worms eat you!

"Go lagaí galar tógálach do chroí" - May an infection weaken your heart

"Go mbeadh cosa gloine fút agus go mbrise an ghloine" - May you have glass legs, and may the glass break

  • Go raibh maith agat! :)

  • "scread na maidine ort" - may you be found dead in the morning and may those who find you scream.

  • how do you pronounce that?

  • skraaaad nah modge-in-eh urt

  • hot

  • nope, common misconception since peeps are ignorant in general( seriously frome "Éire to ire? come on!)

  • Its phonetic... which makes sense.

  • Muppet - the name Éire comes Lebhor Gabhála Eireann, from Ériu - sister of Banba and Fótla - whom gave her name to this glorious nation.

Go raibh maith agat jesjes1, is bhrea liom dp phoist.

  • We shouldn't call the language Irish anyway. It's hiberno-gaeilic or just gaeilic in english. it was only after 1922 that eamonn devalera decided to keep up with the ignomonous Irish since he was a hypocrite shite.Ireland=english thought our island was full of iron ore deposites so they originally calle us "iron land" but then officially became ireland

  • Are you sure about that? Eire = Ire... surely?

  • Ok, i've got to set the record straight here. Gaelic is a group of three languages Irish (Gaeilge), Scotts Gaelic (Gaidhlaig), and Manx. As Irish (Gaeilge) is primarily associated with the island of Ireland and is technically different than the other two languages above there is no need to call the language anything other than Irish or Gaeilge.

  • "Aire" just means caution, care etc.

  • "aire" is used on a lot of Irish road signs.

  • "that's a cool car" - Tá an carr sin faiseanta

  • Gaeilge (pron. Gwaylgah), but most of us just call it Irish.

  • Tiomántán srathach optúil.

  • Well done girl, ignore any abuse.

I am trying to learn Scottish Gaelic at the moment.

  • People who want the language to progress and grow. New words are created all the time in all languages, tbh :)

  • I was tired!

  • Jesjes, and no :)

  • No, he was Scottish, and they speak a form of a celtic langauge. Though, in the movie it is Irish they're speaking, funnily enough.

  • Go raibh maith agat!

  • Lol.

  • Your welcome m'dear! :) Ta súil agam go bhfuil tú sasta!

  • Go minic!

  • coming from an irish student!!! irish is hated in most schools and most people fail it... it doesn't mean its a disgusting its just that it is hated in ireland by students and has been forced into our schools

  • Look Irish is evolving and we shouldn't put someone down for making a great effort at speaking it!! Maith thú lean ar aghaidh leis an obair maith mar tá gá leis

  • Gaelic is from Scotland. This is Gaeilge. Irish. I'm trying to learn it and this helps a lot. Thank you for uploading.

  • I hope you get to posting new vids Jes even if just to say how your job is going. Teaching gig? You must have your hands full now.

  • I am Irish and yet I have no need what so ever to use Irish. so yes its a total waste of time! unless you want to become a teacher

  • Maybe you'll appreciate it later in life? I'm American and Irish is not a practical thing to learn, but I do love exploring it. For me, there is a benefit of learning different languages beyond buying a loaf a bread. Ya never know where or when your education will benefit you :)

  • I am Chinese and married to an Irish-American. You abandon your language and your culture. I am learning Irish - could you imagine China without Mandarin? NEVER! You should not be so lazy and maintain your language and be proud.

  • The only reason to BE Irish is to SPEAK Irish.

Ironically, everything else is just all talk.

  • this was pretty interesting since im Irish

  • Word. Fair play to ya, Jess. Thanks for putting this up. My perspective is that there's not many languages like Irish in the modern world and the Irish people have had a long history with their language. It's *their* language. While learning the "language of power" as James McCloskey ("Guthanna in Éag") says, can be a useful and effective tool, the total shedding of one's cultural and historic language is often lethal for the language's survival. Once it's gone . . .

  • EBONICS

when was that brought about? you dolt. EBONICS...that is for the black culture. it's a invented language. Irish is old....before your time and mine.

  • dood shes hot

  • shes hecka hot holmes

  • C'mon the only places where Irish is spoken is the Gaeltacht and even there it's floundering among young people, I think it should be made optional in schools as people could be learning a more useful language that is actually spoken around the world.

  • Yeah let's drop Irish. Enjoy the British newspapers, British soccor teams, British TV programmes that all Irish people love, admit that independance was a waste of time and admit that our ideals, loves, language and tastes are as British as the British themselves. Then people could be part of a more useful country that is the U.K. C'mon, the only places where Irish is spoken is Ireland and even there it's floundering among young people.

  • POINTLESS !!!!!

  • i never had irish in school ,,, snik snik

  • god i HATE irish.....and just because of school!im doin my leavin next year and im gona fail it coz i hate it with a passion...why is it compulsory?nobody realises that making it compulsory in school is whats killing the language!

  • Great videos, go raibh mile. But Jesus, I IMPLORE YOU NOT TO USE FOCAL . IE, it is nothing but Bearlachas, if anyone who does not know Irish choses to use it please be aware that any word you read with a J,K,Q,V,W,X,Y or Z in it is False Irish (Bearlachas) and any word you read beginning with a H such as héileceaptar is not Irish. Go n-eirí leat.

  • He's clearly not a native English speaker and has made a few mistakes, give him a break! You missed an apostrophe and can't spell illiterate, how ironic!

  • you're 13, right?

  • every language offers real insight into the culture that created it and a different way of seeing the world. i speak lots of languages and have loved learning them, although i didn't love learning irish at the time it was because i wasn't mature enough to appreciate it then. i do now.

  • LMAO it's not dead it's just not feeling very well -i'm gonna quote that!

good point on the use of the word gaelic too. who says "i speak fronsay"? it's francais or french. so why would irish be called gaelic?

  • twat!

  • PHAIL.

  • Good stuff dont let the idiots get you down

    Maireann a sgríobtar

  • Wise men speak when they have something to say. Fools because they wish to say something. I think Pope said that. your a tit, I said that.

  • Dont know how this works but the pope quote was aimed at angel

  • I wouldn't really say your a wiseman seeing that you just stole lyrics from a dylan song

  • Good idea - keep it up. The only slight criticism I have would be that the girl should learn the script off properly.

I agree with PhunLuvr. The amount of abuse that has been posted on this is depressing. A lot of the commentators could benefit from literacy classes too as they clearly can't write, spell or construct a sentence. OMG, Innit.

  • go raibh maith agat ;)

  • Where to start. She's a nice girl, trying to share a bit of our Irish vocabulary. Great idea! Keep the language alive, I say, even if the (mandatory) classes in school never inspired me personally. But, jeez, the percentage of comments that are simply rancid is depressing.

The level of aggressive bile that people feel happy to dispense on the internet is such a sad waste of everything. Anyway... slánte! [pron: slawn'tsha - for anyone like-minded, it can mean, Cheers! ;)

  • tà tu àmadàn anseo!!!!!!

  • an mhaith!! maith thu!

  • Excellent!!!

  • lol its an irish name just may not be very popular lol

  • go raibh maith agat.

Ta an fis go hiontach, maith an beann.

  • No surrender.

  • ah that was cool. chuaigh mé féin go dtí gealscoil san iarthir. ahh nach íontach an teanga é? :)

  • Why is everyone trying to say stuff like thats not how you say....Thats all crap at least she is trying.

  • And this hunkysucks is a complete prick and is giving his own people a bad name. stop being such an asshole

  • there is no need to be so insulting. if you're not interested in gaeilge then don't watch the video. our language was taken from us and the Irish people fought for hundreds of years to keep it alive. fair play to you for making the video. i love the language but can't speak it fluently yet. Gaeilge Abu!!

  • I love my Latin studies. Again, I say Lingua mortua sola lingua bona est

  • One curse I always liked is:

"May the cat eat you, and may the devil eat the cat!"

Written as: "Go n-ithe an cat thú, is go n-ithe an diabhal an cat!"

Say it as: "guh nee-ha un caht hoo, iss guh nee-ha un deel un caht"

  • Why dose anybody need to know irish its the most useless language there is and a complete waste of time.

  • Just because you don't have a use for it, doesn't mean others don't. Why are you even wasting your time badmouthing, if you have nothing good to say? Go hifreann leat!

  • cool Video
