this video is about 7 minutes too long *lol* also you forgot to mention that although this method works perfectly in theory, in REALITY the success rate of the inversion method is only about 40-50% in the real world -- I should know, I've done this method on literally 100's of tracks to "extract" instrumentals, using both the manual method and Utagoe. Props to you though for the part around 6:30 or so and making SURE that people line upthe main/instr track exactly! that's key

I think we need another video ONLY ABOUT INVERSION. I don't think that it's clear enough here... you lost me at the whole peaks and valleys thing. Like if it flips ALL the way around is that REversion or only part of the way is that SUBmersion?? I just dont get it.

@djomar926 in the middle is of the waveform you see is a red line that indicates negative infinity (silence) and the waveform goes out from that line.. so a flat line is silence. I believe above the line is positive phase and below the line is negative phase. So when you have a copy of a waveform with positive phase and a waveform inverted (and thus having negative phase) the two cancel each other out. 1 + (-1) = 0

Since only one copy of the song contains vocals that energy remains.

I used this method and the final product ended up with no vocals as well as no music, basically just silence. ??? Does anyone know what I might've done wrong? The waveform of both tracks ( the inverted instrumental and the complete original ) is still seen in the tracks, but ther eis absolutely no sound. If I dephase the tracks, some sounds start to play again, but not everything... I am using Audacity and I'm a n00b , Thx for responding

I think it depends on the frequency of the vocals. I tried this method for a "Teach Me How to Dougie" Mash up and it worked ok. Not near studio quality but better than trying to mess with EQs. Check out the video on my channel. -KEMO

@lakecityransom Nope - Adobe Audition, which is the updated version of Cool Edit Pro.  Adobe bought Cool Edit Pro a few years ago. You could do this in any wave editor that has multitrack, though, and in most DAWS, so long as they have a sample editor that allows you to invert a waveform. It's quite possible to do it in Audacity, and that's freeware.

@AYVEElol - this makes total sence. You been to math class before? Just like corss multiplying - fraction x inverse. It Cancels out. EXCEPT this is audio. The difference in the two tracks is the vocal. Sooo the remainder is JUST the vocal. Easy breezy.

@Janeyanna - This is genius! He did make an 'Acapella' He demonstrated how as long at the two tracks are lined up - the result is Vocals ONLY. You could simply make sure they are aligned & mix down, or like with my setup play&record at same time.

@jonext007 I think I know how you could get just music. You would have to do this backward from what he just showed.

You would need the acapella first though.... and inverse it. Then play the inversed acapella at the same time with the regular song then you "should" end up with just the music.

i do not know where in the world i would get an instrumental version to certain songs. the songs i want acapellas for do not exist instrumentally...i am going to try these other technics to EXTRACT vocals, leaving a karaoke track. then i will save that track and start this process that way, and cross my fingers. it will be a quasi instumental but we will see if that works.

Would this same technique work if you instead of looking for an instrumental waveform, you actually use the same waveform twice by performing the vocal cut in one and converting the other to mono? (since the vocal cut "removes" the center channel and the left and right channels are placed as a mono channel)
