An overrated hack in the Captain Beefheart mold. Waits is blues for those who don't know the blues, and affected "weirdness" (i.e. not actually weird) for normal college educated white people who think they're hip and "out there". A stale rehashing of Beat movement cliches. In this song Waits engages in some tired and lazily absurdist mocking of religion to please his would-be sophisticated secular audience, (those desperate to satisfy their self image of "coolness".)

Tom Waits has his own sound. He has no reason to try to sound like someone else. Even his speaking voice is somewhat gravelly. Also, most people's speaking voices sound different than their singing voices. However, isn't it typical for most singers modify to certain keys, registers and so on???
