  • The reason why i love marathon monks is their eagerness to to do their task without being afraid of what lies beneath those forest. I salute them for their determination. :)

  • Hm, I was under the impression that they actually ran the whole way. Walking 80 km a day seems pretty doable to me, as long as I had my ipod.

  • @kikomiko1 agreed..this is no running

  • @kikomiko1 80km off of barely any sleep, straw sandals, very little food, for 100 days straight. Oh, and no ipod

  • @kikomiko1

you don't realize the distance and how hard it is to actually run 52 miles(84 km). Only ultra marathoners will be able to run it but that only happens in races instead of everyday. Your stupidity amazes me.

  • Should be sponsored by Red Bull.

  • walking =/= running.

Lifting 5 pounds 100 times is not the same as lifting 500 pounds one time.

I suggest that these people buy mountain bikes. Think of all the extra praying you can do if you can get there faster!

  • "If you start something today, finish it today. Tomorrow is another world." - <3

  • At 16:53... the key.

  • nice video. though i don't think Buddhist determination and discipline is about becoming industrial superpowers.... (around 18:00 mark)

  • this video erased my lazyness, truly inspiring!

  • use nike you noob

  • Inspirant

  • my warmup

  • The fellow that did this twice, Sakai... Once I saw that he was a member of Unit 731, I totally could see why he did this twice... a penance. I hope he has found his peace.

  • @Nihm420 I think he might have. If not he has at least an amazing story to tell...

  • すばらち。

  • Kurt Bell (LylesBrother) sent me here. :)

  • @3clGTX smoking crack sent me here;)

  • Hey WishesSetFree, can't you take over my Big Number project? novaloka.nl

I'm stuck! I always felt it would be something for a Marathon Number Monk.

  • Now, this is the sort of video that distracts me from my math homework, and then I feel like such an American for not bearing through it. D:

    But really, really inspiring!

  • By the way...

  • Wow. It's so inspiring. I wish I had that sort of self discipline.

  • Their disciple and perseverance is incredible . I really admire what they do and don't think I could achieve it at least not now . On the other hand the guy said I learned that everything and everyone is equal ? Are u kiddin after all of that that's all you learned ? It just doesn't make any sense to do this for pretty much nothing . I don't see whats the point of wasting your life like this sorry monks

  • @blopajmbar62 i agree 100% with you. but its the way the monks do it. in their opinion we are wasting our lives. our society is rotten and diseased by laziness. i find it hard to grasp why the monks would go through such things. however, an extreme experience like this often gives an individual some sort of enlightment.

  • will all sects of buddhism reach nirvana no matter wha they teach?

  • @birdclip188 its not up the the sect really, but the individuals ability to eliminate the impurities in their own mind. if their sect teaches them pure ways to eliminate conditioning, and eventually, the ego, then there is no reason why their followers cannot attain enlightenment.

  • Guys, it's a 15 second ad on a 20 minute video. That's better than most t.v. shows. Let the people who posted this get paid for their work, okay?

  • I'm sorry these marathon monks happen, but these monks are lost. what is the point is to being monks. to delute but not delute, but these monks are learning to be some one, but there are no some one, because one every one are leaving this world, and what you are practice to be some one. are so wrong, your mind are created every thing, the point is you want to be some one and that is they key of your self, your circle of life. I think you are lost, but nothing else but a different live of living

  • @heidiluong

    You misinterpret their journey.

YOU are doing your own walk of 'The Tibetan Book of the Dead'.

For many of these monks, they have spent a considerable amount of time in spiritual practice and ritual, but haven't experience the sorrow and pain of many of the things we do

in daily living. Their suffrage journey is compressed into a 1000 day period.

Ours may be drawn out slower over the coarse of 20-30-50 years.

    Lost opportunities, regret, pain, divorce...etc.

    Enjoy your walk.

  • "but the training has taught me that everyone and everything are equal. a human being is not special. there are no special things"

  • Who is he? What is this?

  • For awakening you need to see what is in front of you and hear what is around you. There is no effort and no suffering nessesary to acomplish that. Self torture, inflicting pain, sleep deprovation, hunger, honorable suicide come from bad karma. There are so many methods to aply, koan or sikantaza, mantra, prostrations, zazen, study of buddha's teachings, guru-yoga, tong-len, Chod etc. All these methods are only to awake mindful awareness within you. Identical to Lord Buddha's. Make yourself tea.

  • Real dragon ball training

  • these guys are not fit

  • Don't call them hardcore because they are really devoted to what they doing.

  • Beautifully picturised!

  • i think these monks are trying to copy Master Roshi's training!!!!

  • Please I would really like to know if any of these monks have actually Enlightened doing this severe practice? If so, what do they do with their lives after wards since their health of the body has been wasted? It is good to know that all this physical punishment is totally unnecessary to have Enlightenment. Ramana Maharshi Enlightened 63 devotees with ONE QUESTION which is: "Who Am I."

  • @tobesograteful just read the question and im not enlightened, just die faggotron

  • @tobesograteful These guys are TOTALY INSANE. I mean yes they are ridiculously tough and should be admired on some level but I don't really think anyone could argue that anyone who willing does this isn't completly out of their mind. Still though WOW

  • @tobesograteful And I suppose you're not amongt those 63, are you? For this type of comment and criticism cannot come from an "Enlightened devotee"....

  • @campbpar wtf man

  • Damn. That's something more harder than a Marathon. Also to disembowel yourself.. gosh, that's an Ultimatum.

  • Two words; extraordinary perseverance. These guys are spiritual warriors (like someone said earlier).

  • if you add fighting and competition, this would be a good anime

  • The great thing about running on a mountain is that you don't have to spend 100 dollars on a pair of running shoes to absorb shock from the pavement. Although urban joggers don't have to worry about their feet getting bit by wild boars, just agro winos on a bicycle path! LOL! Running rules!

  • why do people have to put the shitty advertising on videos, usually i see the advert and immediately press back, only because i really wanted to watch this i put up with it.

  • Very impressive and beautifil! Fantastic performance, admirable ascestics, but about enlightement I am not so sure...

He thought he could meditate and concentrate and he couldn't think... What dammages could happen to his brain?

his enlightenment teaching is: everthing is equal, man is not a special thing, but at the end he feels sorry for the japanese losing their traditions. If everthing is equal how he can think and feel that?

  • 10:28 "...or smell food being prepared at the foot of the mountain."

The caption is horribly wrong, and hilarious!

  • @GonzusamaShinkiroku haha i know, i dont know why they said they can smell the food at the foot of the mountain, why didnt they just translate it properly lol

  • @GonzusamaShinkiroku What is the caption supposed to say?

  • @HundredFrogsOne

10:20 "This is why some marathon monk was able to hear the sound of ash falling from an incense stick or, just like an out-of-body experience, hear the sound at the foot of the mountain (as if he were right there.)"

  • @GonzusamaShinkiroku Ah. Thank you :)

  • To get rid of advertisements, download the plugin ADBLOCK

  • Mr. Sakai was not joining in Unit 731, this is incorrect information!!

    He was in preparatory army.

Hence it is not a reason why he became monk.

  • @japon7171

    You're completely right.

  • The training the Buddha saw as the middle path may be viewed has very hard training today. It was after his realization of the middle path that he still vowed to sit under the Bodhi Tree until full realization was obtained.

  • I had to remove this from my favorites & playlist due to the advertisements. It's unfortunate YouTube is being overrun by them. Time to scrub my playlists....*sigh.

Way to screw it up YouTube.

  • @Blackmusca way to pay for the survival of youtube.

  • Definition of Determination

  • some weeks ago I saw a documentary about those monks too (but on German tv). It is really unbelieveable what kind of challenge these men are taking on. I feel deep respect for their ambition!

  • Fucking hate the advertising.

  • @elmenhorster F5 sometimes works

  • Hi Everybody, does anyone know how I can get/ buy this documentry? I really prefer to buy and not download it. I've tried many webshop's, but it's never available. Who can help me? I would be very gratefull!!! :-)

  • These monks are awesome ! True spiritual Warriors

  • These monks were recently referenced by a lecture on TVO: Big Ideas(Ontario, Canada's public broadcaster)

  • saw the documentary years ago on another marathon monk.

    tanno kukudo?

    THE MARATHON FAST WAS UNBELIEVABLE.

nine days without sleep - food - water .

he was skin and bone at the end and only had a few weeks to recover and start the - marathon walks all over again.

wish i had taped it !!!

  • Yes the Buddha denied asceticism after he did it, so what does that tell us? In actuality what happened was he did it as a part of his life path. It's easy for us to make these intellectual judgments but that's all they are.

  • Too bad I watched this while I was procrastinating my homework...

  • Students shouldn't have 24 hour internet access. I am one; and I did the same thing.

  • This is not the path of the middle. Buddha denied asceticism .

    But after he did it.

  • yep... but only after he had experienced the most extreme form of asceticism. It was only once he had returned from that that he taught the middle way.

  • yes, but I think every soul must have that experience to understand the teaching not just recite the teaching.

  • hardcore to the MAX! VERY inspiring.

  • 5 min. aikido

  • asia.. beautiful to me. very different life.

  • It's really unforgivable that they broadcasted such a vicious lie, Sakai was in the unit 731. He was a naval student pilot during the WW2. He was DEFINITELY NOT in the unit 731. There were two main reasons why he entered the priesthood, the death of his friends during war and the suicide of his wife. The disgusting story in this vid about the unit 731 is clearly malicious concotion.

  • @raosunokeshi I really hope that he wasn't in Unit 731.

  • wow talk about taking it to the extreme, like they've got probabley peaked human stamina after finishing that

  • Absolutly amazing. Such discipline is deeply admired.

  • Don't miss this video

  • Was he one of the leaders or just following orders? Add a sense of relativity to what you are saying here about unit 731 before you go making these sorts of statements. You dont even for a start know what role he fulfilled in there. Going from what we know about his flunking school I somehow doubt he was one of the leaders. And before you accuse me of bigotry for saying he was just following orders - he knew full well he would likely be killed by his own if he failed. Think this through first...

  • You're the one thats very slow. I said he SHOULD have been punished. Why can't you read? Why are you so slow? Why do you blind yourself from the blatanly obvious text that is in front of you? And you call me hiding from the truth?

The reality you refuse to see is that he wasn't imprisoned and killed. I'm not saying that's a good thing. I'm not saying I'm glad he got away. I'm saying that that is the reality you are terrified of accepting. If you're such a doer of good, accept reality.

  • Speaking of dumb, this guy was in Unit731. Why did you bring up Nanjing? Are you racist? He's Japanese, so he's automatically all guilty of all crimes commited by other Imperial Jpn troops? Wow... go get a history PhD I'm sure your superior logic will crush any Japanese person. You are always right. He's a criminal, he should have been hanged or shot! Same with all US criminals. Repenting is a waste of time according to djg. "Tried to do nothing but good" - yeah sure... just a average hater.

  • Dont know you, yes, just what you posted. You're more stupid because you say HE'S A CRIMINAL HE SHOULD BE JAILED!! /end brain functions. Point is, he didn't. You can't even read too. I clearly said I AGREE that he should have been imprisoned. But point is he DIDNT in reality. WHETHER YOUR BRAIN REFUSES THAT, its true. And so what did he do as a former criminal? He pursued a life without pleasure. In the west, there is a concept called repenting. You fail at both east and west concepts.

  • You missed THE point though, the point that is not mine or yours. The fact is, yes, I too think he should have gone to jail. But.....since he clearly DIDN'T, what better than to repent for your sins? Western Culture also functions the same way. He could have become a president of a company, wealthy, selfish, or ...a monk that is not a life you would even be able to start to imitate (most people will prefer an American prison probably). Your pick.

  • Denying yourself pleasure and needs is something few humans can do, its to transcend this world like few can. Just because you will never be able to do it because you find it pointless doesnt eradicate its important message.

  • I think I will stick to meditation!

  • does that hat serve any special function?.....it looks like a pretty heavy load to me...

  • I appreciate this informative video.

Thank you for taking the time to post it.

  • the training has taught me that every human being is the same hahaha you havent met me old monk :D

  • Or it is you who haven't met your true self... Woohoo...

  • must move.. must function.. off the mountain

  • I'm told if they complete the 100 day test properly, they can petition to be allowed to do the 1000 day marathon.

  • 40 something miles a day for 90 days everyday.

walking or running, that's a pretty good, a marathon is 26.2 miles, right?

  • something like that, this guy does twice that a day

  • The point of becoming a Buddha is to liberate all sentient beings, so that is the point of this practice. You'll notice that the old guy used to do chemical warfare experiments. There's a reason people with such a background are attracted to doing this practice. It may seem useless to outsiders, but for them, there is really no greater way that they could atone for having caused harm than by doing this.

  • After that, the last 300 days are called the "other benefitting practice" - meaning enlightening others - where he walks around Kyoto. You will notice him giving people blessings. Well, it might be hard for people outside the culture to accept, but that really is supposed to do something. He is mandalizing the area he walks around. The guy himself may be hesitant to mention enlightenment, but the tradition holds that completion of this feat means that you are a living Buddha.

  • For those people asking what this is about:

The first 700 days are called the "self-benefitting practice" - meaning becoming enlightened for oneself. Then the do-iri, which is a ritual death. In order to conquer death, they die while alive.

  • well, does "MARATHON" sex mean you're running while doing it....?

  • listen to what he says from like 6:00 to 6:22

  • did you miss the part about a marathon runner only being able to keep it up for 7 days also most athlets sleep and eat to maximise he has a rice ball and a boul of noodls and two houres sleep a day

  • Narcissistic much? [roll eyes]

  • Seems to me like a load of men sacrificing themselves so as to become as stoic and strong as mothers have to be in order to bring up their children! Seriously though, it's all about personal sacrifice. It shows to me how Life's meaning can be found anywhere. Each to his/her own.

  • "the monks run 84 km every day for over three months."

No way, i dont belive it.

  • holy shit thats tuff sureus damm its hard wtraining 1000 maratons on 7 years

as they said i something you have to FINISH IT from start to the end do not ever ever give u7p hyope folks im telling ya baaad idea to give up hope!

  • and one of the monks is 61 years old!?!!!

  • Indeed a very inspirationa, amazing things to learn from this video.Depending of the sects,I didn't know training what quite that rigorous, several miles walking or bicycleing,or dieting are nothing compared to the monks' training!

  • correct the info!!!!

they are NOT running!! they are WALKING! there is a big difference!!

  • How the fuck can you cover 84 kilometers per day by walking?

    They oughta be running.

  • @MrIzo56 Walk 17 hours straight, sleep for 2 hours. The day has 24 hours, its very possible

  • It is good there are still some real monks in the world. All isn't lost yet I guess.

  • Sakai reminds me of Milarepa. It had a bad past, and was not an exception pracitioner but made it through with grit and devotion. Inspiring for the rest of us who are ordinary folk.

  • I dont think this guy compares anywhere near Milarepa

  • wow ... thats awesome !

  • this isn't athletics. this is a 7yr. marathon religious ordeal. sure, there are people who can run/walk faster and farther at one time. it isn't about that.

what's so great about it? someone asked.evidently they didn't watch the video or understand it.

  • And where is religion coming in in this marathon?

Then any marathon runner is a religious person?

  • lolz

  • I agree and disagree. Though it's only walking, but you do that for 17 hours EVERY day for 100 days. Only 2 hours of sleep. Like they said, the monks eat no medicine or supplements.

  • The idea is that a coward will have no honor to begin with, and will do 'anything to survive'. Meaning a person will steal food from a child if hungry, kill another person to save himself, and will break every rule possible to just save himself. Killing yourself in the old culture was not about 'running away' like a coward, it was about facing self-inflicted pain without fear, as oppose to running off like a criminal

  • Looked at another way, it is to force you to think positively - if you listen to what Genshin says, "you must not allow yourself to think "what if"" you must think positively. Sakai says the same thing "Live every day positively" the death thing is to remind them that the Kaihogyo is all about commitment, and that you cannot back out of it.

  • He said it himself it is not enlightement it is a job, hes showing what people's potential is.The knife is not just Harakiri mentality its about being fully committed to something. There are times in life where you put it all on the line there is no going back. It may not require a knife but something else. A person who quits a good comfy job and follow a dream, sacrificing to raise a kid, quitting drugs to improve your life whatever, because you sacrifice so much that life becomes precious

  • what is he sacrifying? Instead of sitting in an office , now he can indulge in such a useless marathon. Is that better than a doctor´s work who is spending the night saving a sick man´s life? Somebody has to run the country so that these monks can have a good time by tortering themselves.

  • I am not talking about just the monk, I am talking that some people sacrifice daily for things and that at points in their life they have to put it all on the line. There is a point where there is no going back. whatever it may be..

  • "Is that better than a doctor´s work..."

Who are you to judge the value of this monk's life? As long as one has found inner peace and meaning, that's all it matters - regardless of whether or not he/she is saving a life or devoting oneself to spirituality. I also found your comments to be confusing - First you compare the monks to the Tarahumara Indians, but now you say the marathon is "useless." You seem too focused on competition and practicality to understand its meaning.

  • do you understand its meaning? Please, let me know.

  • A doctor saves physical lives, a monk is a living example of living by a strict set of rules and exploring clearing your mind. Its a job someone needs to do and they just do it.

Capitalist world tries to judge everything about the 'value' in terms of a physical act or technological feat, ancient cultures were more about how you lived than that.

  • Its all about taking something seriously to the point of not being attached.

  • maybe,but they didn't spend 9 days without food and drink,that's tough

  • Walking in a mountain and also in winter, when the temperature can go down to -10degC. Well. Perhaps it's easy for you.

  • inspirational. i'd like to see david blaine try some of this stuff.

  • Supereb example beside so many in Zen.

  • Incredible and inspirational!

  • 9 days without food or drink? Fuck that!

  • It was reduced from 10 days, because too many monks died.

  • amazing individuals these traditions are what is missing in the modern capitlist society which is all about wealth and possessions, we have lost our spirituality in the modern world

  • what a devotion?! this people achieve greatness without asking for it, all what they ask for is enlightenment.Would be Sade to loss that. I ought to visit Japan 1 day.

  • Much respect

  • Comment removed

  • IF you wanna become enlightened follow the buddha boys method and meditate literally 24/7 untill you reach buddha hood...Its absolutaly genius...HE IS GOING HARDER THAN THE BUDDHA HIMSELF!!!!

  • He went 8400 Km !!!

  • Remarkable
