green day was never punk people. sex pistols, ramones, velvet underground.... those are punk bands. dont get me wrong, green day is and has always been an awesome band, but they were never punk.
I bet none of the kids watching this could even begin to comprehend the deepness of billie's lyrics. I just love his stage prescence at such a young age :) so adorable <3
@cenation2810 They do have a different drummer. Their drummer here is John Kiffmeyer, who left the band later in the same year (1990). They got Tre after he left.
So, this is when Green Day was cool. Before they sold out to become one of the biggest mainstream bands ever. In my listeners guide to music class at my highschool, my teacher asked of some of the genres of music people listen to, and somebody said punk. The teacher was like what is punk? And a kids like GREEN DAY!! Only punk band anyone knows any more except they stopped being punk after Dookie.

@HedgehogDude18 Punk is about attitude. Just because someone doesn't play super fast hardcore shit doesnt mean they're not punk! And actually, I'd say Insomniac was more punk music wise than the first 3 albums ever were
@deadendguitarist yea, you're right, the melodies weren't as pop-influenced and the simplicity was greater, i don't think there's a single guitar solo on the whole album.
@HedgehogDude18 what changed? it's still simple, it's still fast (mostly) that's what makes out punk. and why do you say "sell out" ? that way they could make more CDs for us to buy and it was the only way to actually make a living out of the band, i mean with what you get out of some independent record label, you can't be sure it will allways be enough (and i doubt it was). they decided to make this band their LIFE, is that a bad thing!?
@HedgehogDude18 Was else?Listened to music before it was mainstream?Or jacked off before it was mainstream. Green Day never said they stay punk, you're holding that against them.
@HedgehogDude18 How about Insomniac? That was the most Punk Rock heavy album they've ever done. Nimrod had a couple too. Just because they're not Punk Rock anymore, and they're a mainstream band, doesn't mean they suck. They've gotten older, wiser and more mature, and their music has evolved. They're at the age where they can handle mainstream success, and where they would look stupid if they wrote more songs whining about their problems. They were an awesome band, but they were just kids then.
@cenation2810 I think EXACTLY the same. Some stupid people don't seem to understand that they can't be writting the same forever. I LOVE their old stuff, I really do, but I like the new one as much as the older. It would be weird hearing a 39-year-old man singing songs about alcohol, drugs and adolescent love. And people wouldn't like that neither. So, that's my opinion. :)
According to a few sources, Tre Cool was actually Al's drum teacher. And perhaps previous roommate/friend. So, while Tre would probably be considered the "better" drummer, one could only blame their teacher for their shortcomings...
It's annoying how everyone hates on john, he got such a huge fanbase for them and chances are, if it werent for his management, they wouldnt have gotten noticed. Don't forget he's the one that got them into gilman st
At the risk of sounding like everyone else on here, John was the drummer for Isocracy before Green Day was playing. Through John's connections from this previous band, Green Day got lotsa shows and even signed to Lookout. For those comparing John to Tre, have you ever heard the Lookout's first album (Lookout Records #1)? Terrible. Then again, he was just 12.
Well, the paradox with John staying in the band is that Greenday would have either not become famous or their path to fame would have taken longer. The reason I came to this conclusion is because when Greenday found Tre, they found that he was very good at getting them gigs and other such connections. I guess some could argue as well that Tre has a better drumming style for this genre, but that is left more to opinion than fact.
john is good on the drums, he does some really awesome stuff on the 1039 record, but tré is different drumming style, better or no (i think he is) they are both very good, but john must be pissed now, not is fault really if he stayed in school, what if the band didn't work ? he was thinking of his futur don't blame him
Well after Reprise Records signed them the major label, they changed this album so that Tre's name would be on it. Fuck John, he's probably beating himself in the ass right now every fucking day, knowing that his old band is now one of the greatest bands in the whole world!
@Sparks217 True that, but they were still fucking awesome on kerplunk and 1,039/smoothed out slappy hours. They're like my two fav albums. What band did john go to after green day? I keep thinking soundgarden but that was chad channing lol
@Sparks217 Also, perhaps green day wouldn't be so famous today if tre weren't in it? So say john never left...they may not be one of the greatest bands in the world? Can you imagine john drumming american idiot? HAHA.
@KurdtKobain09 john was a pretty good drummer, tre wasnt exactly a great drummer in the early days either. its called progression. and john got them loads of gigs, which got them fans. they might not have done so well without him. and for some people its not all about fame, like scott raynor from blink. so john might be happy knowing that he did a good album with them and then left before it got all mainstream and emo
they spent a lot of this album and Kerplunk building an underground following, and then finally released Dookie which launched them to fame. Love this band!
i think mike did a really good job on the harmony in this song :D he sounded great, especially in the beginning!! haha @ the random squeaking at the end
Yeah. This was on Kerplunk in 1992. I guess they dicided to wait to release it until the next album. It sounds like it could have been on 1039 though.
but billie joe wrote this song before kerplunk came out... theres a lot of songs like that. for example, he wrote good riddance(time of your life) before dookie even came out... and it wasnt used until nimrod.
@furpaproductions Yep! I really feel like punching that guy who stole the tapes, and reporting him to the police, so we can all hear the awesomeness that was not meant to be.
@furpaproductions Yeah, but I guess it just wasn't meant to be. I guess Cigarettes And Valentines wasn't meant to be released. I would love another straightforward Punk Rock album from Green Day, but they've grown beyond that, and matured. They're not kids whining about their problems anymore. They've grown wiser, and I'm really happy that they've become what they have. American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown, in my opinion, were musical masterpieces.
@furpaproductions As much as I love 1039, Kerplunk! and Dookie, I just don't think that they should throw away everything they've become since Nimrod.
@cenation2810 ya dude i totally agree. like there new stuff(warning, american idiot, 21 century b-down). its all good music. but i have to agree their old "punk" stuff is fantastic.
The people probably would have never thought the band they were watching would become one of the biggest rock bands in history in just a few years.
