Something to think about:

There are three axes: x (left-right), y (up-down) and z (to or away from the observer).

Cless' position is based on the x- and y-axis, his attacks are too.

No matter what the z-coördinate is, Cless' attacks will hit there since they only require an x- and y-coördinate.

Jade can't sidestep Cless' attacks because of this. Jade can however hit Cless regardless of z-postion.

Looking at it this way, it's actually a quite balanced battle.

its funny ive tried the majority of the battle systems and its progressed over time. Phantasia is a great game but the battle system makes it to where u can spam ultimate moves 10 times in 5 seconds to the point where the game looks like it's freezing up and spells cause the game to pause right then and there kinda makes it almsot cheap ^^ Not saying its a BAD thing im jsut saying it really is progress and i think the later LMBS's make the games a lot more fun cause you can experiment more ^^"

Cless is quicker than Jade and would overcome him very quickly. Also, it takes time for him to cast spells and people aren't stupid enough to even give him time so Jade would basically die flat out. And it doesn't matter if you have a really flashy special if you have to make a long incantation to use it so if Jade tryed to use Indignation, Cless would just kill him while he was casting it and Cless is also better at close combat :).

He brought a spear to a gun fight and WON. Yes, Jade's spells way overpower Cless to start with, but Jade doesn't HAVE to have those. He's the Colonel of the Third Division of the Malkuth military for a reason. Long-range with spells, close-range with a spear . . . Jade's versatile. He can adapt to the situation with ease.

No. The snes version is the original. They did a remake for the playstation a few years later and that was when they decided to add Suzu as a potential member of the party. They also did this for the Gameboy Advance version of Tales of Phantasia.
