Notice how this is video was shot in the mid-to-late 70s, but there's no embarassing outfits and the music isn't dated at all, unlike some acts from that period whose clothes and tunes are laughable now. Remember, this vid is less than a year after Elvis Presley's death and only 7 years after the Beatles broke up.
@11xzxzxz I know everyone has their issues (he's included) but what do you mean once great? When's the last time you saw him perform live because whatever he had then he has more of it now.
@keonewstuff Costello, imo, no longer writes great songs; maybe some r not ever good. Since Imperial Bedroom Elvis has a lot more female fans and has toned down his songs so he can do his Cole Porter. One time he was in my top 3 and now not even top 50 . A new listen to live performance or any songs between 1981 and today's material is not going to make him suddenly better to me. I've heard some of his songs and with the exceptions of Everyday I write the Book or "45" i don't like him
@11xzxzxz I guess it's all in personal preference. I mean sure he's "toned it down" but I don't think he did it completely for his female fans. As you get older you just don't feel the same as you did when you were young & angry. He's had plenty of great songs that gave you just as much as Imperial Bedroom and its predecessors. I don't like you comparing him to Cole Porter in that sense but I think I understand what you mean. No hard feelings at all for your opinion though. He's still in my top.
@keonewstuff I understand what you are writing but you should realize his anger is not what makes his songs great to me. It's not the young and angry and toning it down is not a bad thing .. it's just that the melodies have gone downhill, to me since Imp. Bedroom. Sure I like a few later songs like Everyday I read the book or when I was cruel or 45 or Spooky Girlfriend and Elvis did a fantastic cover live of "I just don't know what to do with myself" (not the one with Burt Barcharach) ...
@keonewstuff cont ... though I love Burt's music. On Spectacle he did a short version of Smokey Robinson written "captured by the game" that was fantastic. OK well good-luck and I do not think you ever need to apologize in any way for an opinion.
I love these videos, but I have a question for anyone who reads this.
I know that EC plays a Fender Jazz Master but I'm wondering if anyone knows what amp or distortion he's using. I remember there used to be a website that listed tons of guitarist's info as far as guitar/amp/pickups/pedal, but I can't seem to find it anymore.
If anyone knows about the website or what kind of equipment costello used gimme a reply or email or something.
I got my mind blown apart five times over and all I can think is, "Thank God for Elvis Costello". And thank you too boulionbeefcube for putting these up.
@Avatar2005, Yeah, f*****g ungrateful bastards. This is so great I just sit and smile in awe - and that's from watching the video... I can only imagine what it would have been to have been there. Seen them live many times, but they mellowed and that unbridled youthful raw energy just isn't there anymore.
These two are my favorite, though the whole set is awesome. I would put this up against anything today.

The synthesizer is a bit dated now... and maybe that mullet Elvis is sprouting.

@degree7 There's no synthesizer in that performance. Maybe you meant the organ, which is timeless.

I reckon the songs are better arranged and sounding on this recording than the originals.
