I'm trying to convert my mom into a Linux user. xD I'm an Ubuntu girl at heart, and I really think I always will be. I'm hyped for 12.04, especially as it will have LTS(Alpha 1 is out now, Alpha 2 on 2nd Feb). If you've never used linux before give it a shot. for me when you got a linux in your machine it's more personal like no one should touch it other than you, if it's windows, it's like just a family computer,.
@katsuneshinsengumi I would agree with that. Linux is an operating system that becomes very personal. Windows is more of just a computer. Its what comes with the pc and most people don't think about having any options.
WoW people this is 2007 post, is there anything changed in linux since ? reason now is: lack of support .. open source .. community .. bla bla bla, before judging look what it takes to learn how solve a problem in linux whatever the distro is.. some guy starts,, hey I'm new to linux and i have this problem how solve it? the response comes OK ..Open terminal!!! type this mystery command give us results and after 100 useless posts from geeks someone will finally say aha it's kernel issue ..
Linux is great, and btw, the new ubuntu 11.04, and since 10.10 wil open a .deb file automatically in the ubuntu software center. i find that very user friendly. just like windows has exe, and mac has dmg. deb seems like it will be the standard for linux.
I love linux. I have it installed on my laptop and dual boot with windows on my desktop. I havent used windows since 11.4 came out. Also loving the option to switch from unity to classic on ubuntu login.

I switched to Ubuntu about a year ago... haven't look backed since... However I do have dual boot which is quite easy to setup with the ubuntu CD, the on screen installation is simple.... It is recommended to try the live CD first so you can make sure you will have working hardware "out-of-the-box" sometimes you will need to download a driver (for me it was the sound driver) As a web designer in PHP its the best option for you to develop in the environment you will be uploading too...
I Moved from Windows to Ubuntu and at first screwed up because I partitioned and messed it up, then I did it again and the only problem I had was my wifi card driver had to be installed and instantiated
Linux in total is bigger than OSX ad the moment. Windows still has 90% of the desktop market. Linux is nr 1 on the server now. On the desktop Linux is the 2nd operating system.

Nice to see how it was 4 years ago. Much is changed with Linux and Windows.
Both have improved. Windows 7 is one of the best operating systems. It is stable and it runs everything.
Lunix has improved a lot. It was already stable but it improved on suport in drivers and it is only getting better. It is also much user frendly than 4 years ago. the latest kernel that is used in the new distro's is just great. Linux made the biggest step forward.
@emiel1976ep windows updates very slow like 3 years whichs makes them not as high tech and linux if people think the new os sucks they use a old os which some people are using and 10 yr old os and others are using a 1 that is 45 days old
Ragarding the video. I think the recent shift in Linux from multi-distros to one--JUST UBUNTU--is going to be better for some and perhaps better for the future of Linux. With one distrobution, perhaps this will mean more solid support and much greater adoption by the masses. Now, I am speculating and am a newer adopter myself. I think 10.10 and 11.04 are quite user friendly with very little cmd-line action required. The option is there which is good though.
For me, I just recently adopted linux about 2 months back. I went from 10.10 and am now using 11.04 Beta 1 and I really love it. Switching was easier for me because I was running Win. 7 STARTER edition on my netbook and it was slow. I like the low resource use of Linux and the look and feel as well as the fact that there are things to learn here and there--but that's just me. I do find 11.04 to run better for me--better hardware support.
Linux comes with a heaping helping of freedom with regards to it being open-source (anyone can change/improve their distribution).
Problem is that Linux doesn't have a strong position in the PC market. People who have used Windows all their lives (especially Macs) are going to shy away from Linux because it is quite different from either Windows's or Macs. It was hard for me to find drives, and I had to constantly use the Terminal (command prompt for Windows). But I like to learn about Linux.
ubuntu rules man hahaha its great, my netbook just broke down because i was mesing around so i installed ubuntu and now its all good, but before i was using hp mie interface witch sucks in a couple ways but is still good in few ways, in my opinion linux is the best, it doesnt get a lot of viruses and its EASY im only 12 and i installed it hahaha, no really
@ThePaulmax029223 good deal Paul. Considering your age..If i were your father ( i'll be 31 in july so in between age of older brother and fatherhood vs you) i'd definitely say i'm proud of ya. If you keep disciplined on researching technology, then no matter what coherent computer technological career you choose later in life you'll massacre all the other wanna bees. Now I must give ya a little maturity hint to save you future insults. don't " haha" before or after you talk. cheers.
@chronofusion ya i know what you mean when you say i should keep disciplined in technology, in my point of view i have no choice, my computer will get screwed up in one way or another and since i don't have that much money most of the time the only option i have is to fix it myself and that requires me to do plenty of research so thats how i know so much about computers. thanks for the tip on saying "haha" when i think about it insults do come from that, just the other day that happened a chick
I have bee using Linux Ubuntu now for the past 4 months, I have installed it in the work place and also on a complete novices Samsung N150 Netbook using wubi so he can choose which OS to use Windows Basic or Ubuntu Unity.. Guess which one he like the best... you guessed it Linux :) Linux is getting better and fun to use. The best things in life are FREE :)
Installing applications on ubuntu is easy. Ubuntu software centre for the win. It's alot like using the iPhone/android/blackberry/Mac apps store. Very simple. Ubuntu is great for novices. I gave my aunt and uncle an ubuntu computer and they love it.
The beginners and non-savy users that you're talking about who would struggle with linux have just as many problems with windows. Sure, installing ubuntu etc can be difficult (tho I've had very few issues with that on my dell xps m1530), but do you honestly think that these people could install windows?? Get drivers from OEM websites, install antivirus software, run update managers, install office, get flash player for internet explorer? No way. Not a hope. When it comes down to it, its about...
(sorry, I forgot to spell check the last entry) People better wake up, Microsoft has a ot up its sleeve for the future, and it NOT a pretty picture. It may even cause problems for Mac. It will hurt open source. And they wlill end up paying a M$ tax anyway for access. Anyway, I first started on Windows 3.1 in 1993. I also used Mac then at at coffee shop. I have seen a lot of changes. Many are negative. Linux can compete more its just a matter of time and improvement.
...and Jolicloud is really improving. But I can tell you that easypeasy support is very good. Jolicound, not so good right now. If you want an OS that is more traditional, Linux Mint is great, and set up for the average user, so it will run what you need to run out of the box. But there are some great OS out there now. And getting better, much faster than Windows did.
Hardware support is getting better. But you can thank fear of microsoft for that. But the generic drivers are getting more OK...
Linux has some a LONG way. And with the size of the repositories now, you can get pretty much everything. And if you go an get it from a site, then all you need to know is what prefix to get and its just as easy as Windows. At least in Ubuntu based distros. And the documentation is outstanding. In many cases, better than Windows.
And with the future being "in the cloud" the OS is getting easier still. I have learned a lot about Linux. I really like easypeasy 1.6. It just works for me....
Linux will never take off until a standard can be reached and only a company that charges for it's product will be able to devote the resources to actually making Linux as users friendly as Windows.
that may be closer to realization than you know right now
eventually they will all switch to a universal install format, thats the oNLY gripe i have with linux right now. that and the fact microsoft owns the directx gamign API.
besides that, running ubuntu is like running OSX, only without the $2500 computer
@dudeproductions100 It depends, Windows is best for games whereas Linux is good for a basic operating system and Mac is good for quality software and eye candy :P
@81minuten no offense, but please don't yak about bullsh1t like that because mac os x is based on freebsd (coreutils + gnu coreutils; but kernel is NeXTSTEP Mach kernel), which in turn freebsd is based on some form of UNIX (system 7 and up)
to answer your question, moving from windows to linux is stressing.. i really moved by mistake, but once you figure everything out it's super.. and plus with the help of the community on your back it's much easier....SN: if you dnt knw much about computers, please dnt you use linux..
VirtualBox is better than Virtual PC IMHO. You don't need hardware acceleration!
I disagree about Linux being unready for the desktop. Linux is more ready for the desktop than Windows. If your biggest complaint is that there aren't many Debian packages, that's not a good excuse. There are plenty.
and Ubuntu DOES work. It's not misery, that's Windows. WIndows is so closed and confusing.
No offense Chris, but you sound biased towards OSX. Then again, I am biased towards Linux.
I dont get this... it may have been the 3 year difference in time, but I switch from windows to ubuntu cold turkey no problem. I have one problem I have not been able to resolve (webcam) I recently installed ubuntu on my sisters computer, and she is not a techy person. I installed it on her computer and got it set up, and she is torrenting, web surfing, getting used to using rhythmbox. The change is so simple, all you need to do is spend a slight bit of time to get windows programs to work.
the interface is consistent windows interface is not consistent you fool! look at win vista totally changed interface and i use the classic them in winxp to work around i can not work in winxp default theme , on the other had gnome desktop have consistent look
There is no way? Haha. Some open source will win, it maybe Linux may not, but Microsoft will fall.
It is only "geeks" who know Windows who have issues with Linux. They see the learning curve as too steep, the learning curve for my grandmother is just as steep for Linux as Windows or Mac OS.
@filoIII I already installed it back the same day I wrote you that comment since Linux formatted the drive you would have to delete the partition and it would restore it to a new hard drive. Just put the disk in then restart your computer when windows loads then when it come to you hard drive just do the step I told you above
@IdleOrange I've had computer medics say linux is too complex and aggrevating for them, much less for the avg pc user which 90% of computer users are. HP sent the wrong cd's years ago anyway. I do thank you for your help. I now have windows 7 and wish I could go to xp virtual mode, but I only have home premium therefore I can't do it i guess.
@IdleOrange exactly, this applies to me look im only 17 and i started using computer at like 12, i know so much about xp that its boring now, i want something new to learn and something challenging, i want to see what im capable of and be different from other people... so this is why i am using linux right now.. :ubuntu:
actually i moved from windows to ubuntu lucid lynx about a month ago and my only problem is with flash (cuz adobe flash 10 for 64 bit machines isn't out yet) i moved and to say the truth only the few first hours are difficult afterwards everything became easy and i feel much better than using windows and i did recommend it to few people that i think will be able to handle the change but generally i do not recommend it cuz ppl r used to windows i guess linux is for ppl who don't mind learning new
Chris, ru retarded? "in osx you just drag and drop the icon" i use all os's and that icon is acctually a folder, like and exe that holds the preogram, in ubuntu its deb, i never had to compile anything for normal use (im doing crazy stuff =P) i even use it for playing games, all my games (no not flash games) on ubuntu 10.04 =D (im an it tech)
A have a dual boot PC: Ubuntu 9.10 and XP Professional. For internet, skype...I use ubuntu (it`s very fast and safe), and for PC games (my kids) we use XP Pro. XP never "steps" on internet...on my PC.
chris is the biggest fag ever jesus, he uses a linux live cd, he probably never jumped off on linux open source BLOWS OSX and windows (7 and vista) OUT the WATER
Chris check your self. Fuck the parents who said, they dont need linux..... Linux is for SMART people, if your not computer swavvy then dont touch it
@XxdemoxX1 Yes, Linux is great for those willing to learn how to use it. But most people either don't want or don't have enough time to learn Linux. There is also an issue of choice: Linux involves a lot of choice, and the choice scares off many people.
i fiddled around with ubuntu for a while and i loved it. but i never really did anything productive on it and it was never capable of being my primary OS. i made my own distro and im using it on my netbook 24/7 (but it still has win7 to dual boot to just in case) and my primary pc's are still windows
1)MOST people ARE not into "tinkering" and "messing" with anything "technical".
Linux 's GUI is NOT AS "user-friendly" as a DOS environment or even a Mac OS.
2)Linux doesn't have that corporate juggernaut behind it. That in turn, is why you'll very rarily see developers of many of the most popular apps, etc produce Linux compatible versions.
@joebg1 I don't want to prove someone wrong, but just present my own opinion. 1) Agree. But Linux is very user-friendly for those who know how to use it, but it is not noob-friendly. 2) IMO, it is more like a vicious circle problem: developers don't want to develop for OS with small market share, and people don't want to switch to Linux because they can't find programs they are used to. 3) Mac OS X is very different from Windows, and yet many Windows users switched to it.
He complains about freedom, fails to compare systems on the same scale (OS X and GNU/Linux? Going to compare a car with a tire, next?) and misunderstands design principles for lack of functionality.
Absolute uniformity like what you ask is not possible without a strict, indisputable authority, and that is the very opposite of freedom!
This is old stuff. In only three years, Linux has exploded. Chris is thinking that nothing is going to change. No one will need more than 637 kb of memory for a personal computer.
now im using ubuntu "Karmic Kola" and is great,...i really dont know why that stupid call linux: "misery"....my opinion... this piss of shit is misery....i mean talking about wich is better,....in my case im think smarter when i use a free OS.... in other people opinion...they think are smarter as me when they pay alot of money for a OS,and make other people rich...
i wish all windows users happy "Not Responding"...
I put Xubuntu on my uncle's older PC after XP got plagued real bad with viruses. All he uses is Firefox and he loves it. It doesn't bug him about any system events, and it's fast. When the Comcast guy came out to fix the internet and tried to put their BS software on it, he was confused and was like "What is this? Where's Windows?? My CD won't work!" I nearly ROFL'ed for like an hour. It's also resistant to little kids, cause you're never logged on as a superuser!
I've been using windows since 1998. Recently (Few weeks ago) I installed Linux Ubuntu 9.10 through VMware on my Vista machine. I found myself after a couple of days of the install I couldn't stop messing around with Ubuntu more than Vista. I decided to install Ubuntu 9.10 through Wubi which was a breeze. My Vista crashed and now I'm just using Ubuntu 9.10. It was such an easy learning curve and when ever I run into a problem I can find the answer on youtube or through google search. I love it.
Do games run on linux? I´m watching my game boxes (~60 :P ) and mostly games requirements is windows and e few mac os. Is it as easy as buy a game.....install it....play. If not then why should i want Linux? I can do anything with windows and more as I understand without any extra efforts.
one problem that i expirience with ubuntu just after install it was the resolution i was used to 1024x768 in ubuntu the highest was 800x600 i just can get it to work ,
Gave a gOS (ubuntu based) cd to a workmate who was struggling with windows xp and said it was so easy to install and use, also a LOT faster on the same hardware (4yr old machine) and so far hasn't called for "tech support"
I've been using linux since 97 and have rarely had to configure anything (started with SuSE then ubuntu and now Sabayon)
why doesn't a program like Ubuntu come preloaded with a video editing program? There a video editing program that comes with Windows and one that comes with OS X.
I have an older laptop that I have Ubuntu loaded up with. I started using it again and I did find some video editing software. Now all I need is for Audible to produce a client for Ubuntu Linux.
im about to switch from win to ubuntu right now. its a bit difficult, and it includes alot of reading on the internet. but i think switching from win to mac, would have the same issues. prillo-you say you are open minded, but in this video, it does not seem like it. it looks like this issue is irritating you, and clearly you made your choice from the start-mac. that is not the way of trying new things. i love linux from the start, and that gives me the extra energy to try to figuring it out
I feel that Linux is, how to say, a bit of an "underground" thing... Being supported by a community of fans and forums just isn't enough. What Linux needs is STANDARDIZATION, support and funding i.e. start being looked after by a serious software company... I still love it, nevertheless, but it just breaks my heart sometimes...
13:10 I recommended several distros to several people. I'm still not sure why I did.
If you wanna try Linux:
1. try it in a virtual machine
2. try it from a live-cd
3. wubi and dualboot
My way was live-cd and dualboot. And now I'm running only from live-cd. (I'm tired of installing new versions of Linux. So i don't. I run them from live-cd. If I'd liked to try several versions of Windows, it would probably cost me a lot of money which I don't have.)
13:10 Yepp. I've done it. I'm not totally happy with it, but I stick with my choice and try to find a way to fix, or at least, to handle the "issues".
I think for new pc users, the approach with the package manager and repositories is more or less easy and good. (You have one tool to install software.) The only drawbacks I see with this approach are:
*How install software who isn't in the repositories?
Its not lazy, the average computer user dont even know how to type, unless they are a secretary, let alone relearn a new Os.Should they learn how to type?
Now for computers like dell with ubuntu, thats different because those distros are made for that machine.
Why do you think people arent going to linux in droves, its too complicated and we dont have the time.
@CaptChrisT agree, ubuntu is probably the easyest OS to install programs on, you find the program in the software center and click install, thats it. and with wine you can run some windows programs aswell.
Installing programs in Linux is not the same as windows and the Mac is not like windows. But if you take a moment to learn the way Linux installs programs, I think you may agree it is actually EASIER to install on Linux than in windoze.
i just switched to a dual boot setup ubuntu/winxp and from my experience that's true. i actually find it a lot easier to install apps on linux...for the most part. there are still some apps that require a little more work to install if they're not an official repository or whatever.
but tbh, even though im still learning and getting accustomed to linux, im liking it more and more.
the only issue ive had is compatibility. there's certain programs i need that either i havent found or dont exist
i would recomend ubuntu linux for any new user. resons are from experience. my step mom is computer illitarate. she gets confused of the copy and paste method. she clicks on thins and chages setting trying to learn the system and screws it up. i had to reinstall windows twice for her cuz of mindless hey what happens if i do this type stuff. in linux you cant acidently screw it up like that. anything done in linux can only be done on perpose. after i switch her she hasent crashed it yet.
I like Pirillo, but he is coming off more and more like a Mac fanboy. Take what he says about Linux lightly. I will concede that driver support in Linux is lackluster to say the least, but don't kid yourself about the capabilities Linux has. I am running MS Office 2007 on my ubuntu box via WINE. Very easy. For the average user who browses the web, writes documents, plays with photos and music, and prints stuff, Linux is MUCH easier than windows. The system won't slow down over time either.
What you must realize, if you are considering Linux, is that you will have to endure a learning curve. It takes time to learn a little bit about a new system. Everyone did this for many years with Windows, due to lack of options. Ubuntu has gone a long way towards bridging the gap between system use, and familiar features. If you consider switching, use Firefox instead of IE, use Pidgin for IM'ing, use Mozilla Thunderbird instead of Outlook. Do this while in Windows now, before you switch.
If you prefer to use Windows or Mac, that is fine. But you will always be controlled by those companies. You will only be able to do what Microsoft and Apple allow you to do on YOUR box. Linux offers greater capabilties and potential than Windows ever can. Apple is too concerned with form rather than function, and of course locking everything down. Trying using non-apple apps on your iphone, you will see what I mean. Linux is a diamond in the rough, but it will shine eventually.
That's because you can make it look like whatever you want it to. You could clone the Vista UI if you wanted, or Mac OS X, or Windows 95. You can do whatever you like with it. The only desktops that ever look the same are default desktops for the various distros, and if you're the kind of person who's going to change your operating system you're going to change how it looks, too.
um well I'm a granny and I'm gonna give it a shot! I like the ethos of linux. I'd really appreciate any help from anyone out there who knows what they are doing. I have an old hp laptop with windows vistalll a lot said here about painfull experiences..but I figure it can't be any worse than what I go through on daily basis...my daughter says linux is poular in france and the police force out there use it...SO...Please you young ones do send me some advice. thanks!
I agree with Chris, until "Granny can do it" then Linux will never win. However, much to our Directors concern, some of us are about to switch our work PCs to Linux to improve performance with minimum cost.
We run Terminal Server W2K8 with Office 2007 so can work from any platform withou over head of Local Virtual Machines.
The need to be compatible with the rest of the world (Office 2007) and Open Office not 100% compatible unfortunately means most people cannot ditch windows but I am trying!
i switched. i am now using ubuntu 9.04 jaunty on my asus eee pc 1000HE. i am in love. i will be honest, it DOES take some tweaking, but when you get it, its solid! i use it for ALL my movies, music and internet. i am not a big gamer so i dont care about what windows wants me to do anymore. i dont really use my mac anymore anyway.
My #1 problem: XWindows, sound config, and overall plug-and-play-ability. Much better lately, but still not all there. X still breaks too easily, and too hard to fix. Why isn't there a Boot to XVesa mode on the grub menu from every distro like Windows' boot to standard VGA? Puppy Linux is the closest I've seen to a distro I could recommend to new users, except for the little problem that I don't consider it the best desktop OS for long-term use.
If you are using Arch, then yes X will can break pretty easily. But if you're using Debian Lenny, CentOS, ... things will be extremely stable.
I agree with the XVesa comment.
I certainly do not advise new people to use Puppy or one of those distros. They work a bit (not talking about the gui) different than "normal" distros.
chris i am with you kinda. linux will not become huge if installing is harder then point and click... if they get linux more standard with installing and ect. i think it will have a chance. other that the rest fits fine with everyone i've talked to.
Install it in a virtual machine, or install it to USB and boot from it. Just, I beg you, don't try to use Wubi...

The option is there which is good though.
ecm86 9 months ago
For me, I just recently adopted linux about 2 months back. I went from 10.10 and am now using 11.04 Beta 1 and I really love it. Switching was easier for me because I was running Win. 7 STARTER edition on my netbook and it was slow. I like the low resource use of Linux and the look and feel as well as the fact that there are things to learn here and there--but that's just me. I do find 11.04 to run better for me--better hardware support.
ecm86 9 months ago
Linux comes with a heaping helping of freedom with regards to it being open-source (anyone can change/improve their distribution).
Problem is that Linux doesn't have a strong position in the PC market. People who have used Windows all their lives (especially Macs) are going to shy away from Linux because it is quite different from either Windows's or Macs. It was hard for me to find drives, and I had to constantly use the Terminal (command prompt for Windows). But I like to learn about Linux.

No way. Not a hope. When it comes down to it, its about...
porterejohn 11 months ago 2
(sorry, I forgot to spell check the last entry) People better wake up, Microsoft has a ot up its sleeve for the future, and it NOT a pretty picture. It may even cause problems for Mac. It will hurt open source. And they wlill end up paying a M$ tax anyway for access. Anyway, I first started on Windows 3.1 in 1993. I also used Mac then at at coffee shop. I have seen a lot of changes. Many are negative. Linux can compete more its just a matter of time and improvement.
RCK502 11 months ago
...and Jolicloud is really improving.
RCK502 11 months ago

I agree with chris for 3 simple reasons:
1)MOST people ARE not into "tinkering" and "messing" with anything "technical".
Linux 's GUI is NOT AS "user-friendly" as a DOS environment or even a Mac OS.
2)Linux doesn't have that corporate juggernaut behind it. That in turn, is why you'll very rarily see developers of many of the most popular apps, etc produce Linux compatible versions.
3)it's different. People hate different!
I challenge anybody to PROVE HIM WRONG!
.....you WON'T.
peace!
joebg1 1 year ago
@joebg1 I don't want to prove someone wrong, but just present my own opinion. 1) Agree. But Linux is very user-friendly for those who know how to use it, but it is not noob-friendly. 2) IMO, it is more like a vicious circle problem: developers don't want to develop for OS with small market share, and people don't want to switch to Linux because they can't find programs they are used to. 3) Mac OS X is very different from Windows, and yet many Windows users switched to it.
darthirakli 1 year ago
Chris is being an ignorant bigot in this video.

Metaphysicalman3 2 years ago 2
i just switched to a dual boot setup ubuntu/winxp and from my experience that's true. i actually find it a lot easier to install apps on linux...for the most part. there are still some apps that require a little more work to install if they're not an official repository or whatever.
but tbh, even though im still learning and getting accustomed to linux, im liking it more and more.
the only issue ive had is compatibility. there's certain programs i need that either i havent found or dont exist

The system won't slow down over time either.
normanwingnut 2 years ago 3
What you must realize, if you are considering Linux, is that you will have to endure a learning curve. It takes time to learn a little bit about a new system. Everyone did this for many years with Windows, due to lack of options. Ubuntu has gone a long way towards bridging the gap between system use, and familiar features. If you consider switching, use Firefox instead of IE, use Pidgin for IM'ing, use Mozilla Thunderbird instead of Outlook. Do this while in Windows now, before you switch.
normanwingnut 2 years ago
If you prefer to use Windows or Mac, that is fine. But you will always be controlled by those companies. You will only be able to do what Microsoft and Apple allow you to do on YOUR box. Linux offers greater capabilties and potential than Windows ever can. Apple is too concerned with form rather than function, and of course locking everything down. Trying using non-apple apps on your iphone, you will see what I mean. Linux is a diamond in the rough, but it will shine eventually.
normanwingnut 2 years ago
i dont even know what linux looks like lol

That's because you can make it look like whatever you want it to. You could clone the Vista UI if you wanted, or Mac OS X, or Windows 95. You can do whatever you like with it. The only desktops that ever look the same are default desktops for the various distros, and if you're the kind of person who's going to change your operating system you're going to change how it looks, too.

um well I'm a granny and I'm gonna give it a shot! I like the ethos of linux. I'd really appreciate any help from anyone out there who knows what they are doing.
The need to be compatible with the rest of the world (Office 2007) and Open Office not 100% compatible unfortunately means most people cannot ditch windows but I am trying!

i switched. i am now using ubuntu 9.04 jaunty on my asus eee pc 1000HE. i am in love. i will be honest, it DOES take some tweaking, but when you get it, its solid! i use it for ALL my movies, music and internet. i am not a big gamer so i dont care about what windows wants me to do anymore. i dont really use my mac anymore anyway.
i love ubuntu!!!!! linux rox!!!

This all depends on the distro you are using.

I recommend you, and everyone else, should try the new version of Ubuntu, 9.04. Just try it out.

chris i am with you kinda. linux will not become huge if installing is harder then point and click... if they get linux more standard with installing and ect. i think it will have a chance. other that the rest fits fine with everyone i've talked to.

Lots of Linux distros, especially Ubuntu are extremely easy to install.
Click forward 5 times and wait 20 minutes.

i didn't mean installing linux... i meant other apps. alot of people don't want to learn how to do that. (parents and ect.)
