Thank you for reply! I got a question. When i get my bass guitar itll be my first guitar ever. But i want to know what guitar should i get first. I mean should it be 6 strings/5 strings or 4 strings. Because i noticed that most of the rock songs (which I'm going to try at 1st) are played with 6 strings, but guitars with 6 strings are very expensive and i have heard that beginners should play with 4 string guitar at first o i have no idea which one should i take first. :/
The standard (most common) bass guitar is a 4-string bass. Make sure you don't confuse "guitar" with "bass guitar". They have entirely different functions in music.
In the very early days (especially without supervision and thoughtful and paced practice) yes, our fingers do hurt. I suggest to build your stamina and the impacted muscle groups slowly.

by the way im also trying to play smoke on the water on the bass by the same way i do on guitar. I get this buzzing noise though when i hold down the string on the fret and try to switch real fast. any suggestions?
I am a drummer/percussionist and I need to mix it up a bit so I looked up how to play bass because my dad is a professional bass player and I started watching your videos and I have mastered everything so far up to this video; in only a night. I can’t wait to show my dad, Thx!
P.S. Playing bass is fun and I am looking forward to watching more of your videos. Question of curiosity also, my wrist that’s on the fret board is pretty soar and I was wondering if I will get used to it
You wrist should not be sore, unless you squeeze too hard for too long. Just use enough pressure to get a sound without fret buzz. Maybe your dad can take a look, just to make sure all is good.
Failing to cover 4 frets is going to necessitate much more shifting of your hand position, though. Which seems to leave you with a choice of the lesser of two evils... more splayed fingers, or more shifting... it's not clear which one is unequivocally worse, and it could well be an individual preference. (I tend to prefer using 4 fingers and shifting less).
I tend to use what is best for the situation. If, for example, a bass riff is within an octave shape (3 frets) in a lower position, then I use 4 in 3. If arpeggios, and possibly scales, are the main ingredient, then I will use 4 in 4.
Essentially, I want the playing and the technique to be physically comfortable - no stretches, no strains.
Hi there, i was just wondering what is the solution for my problem, i have very short little fingers, maybe just play with three fingers miss little finger all together, ive tryed using it but it doesnt work, thanks
Hi George! I'm a beginner and I have very small hands (as I'm only 14) and I was wondering if you would have any tips to make it easier to play with small hands? Thanks! Your videos are very helpful all the same!
Small hands should not be an issue when you use four fingers in the space of three frets (as addressed in this video) AND you pivot between notes, i.e. don't stretch.
I've been playing bass for 4 years and i'm not really a beginner but neither and expert. I want to learn more so i'm watching you from the basics. Hope you teach how to slap and stuff like that in later videos :)

Hi George. i just want you to know that you are one of my biggest inspirations on playing the bass plus your mini lessons are really helping beginners like me
Hi George, I am so glad to see that 4 fingers on 3 frets will work. I have been straining to do 4 frets and it hasn't been good. I am a beginner and I am really enjoying your mini lessons.
Thanks for your input. Although it is a little known fact, most top professional bass players use the 4-in-3 approach, especially in the lower positions.
Is it normal for the strings to hit the frets when I do this? Are you pressing down on the strings or doing the same thing as what you showed us on the second lesson?
Hey, you're pretty good, and these videos have been helping me alot. I was wandering, can you help me with the tunning of a song? I've already learned how to play it, but I can't figure out the tuning (because the tabs tuning are wrong, maybe) It just doesnt sound the same
@BassLessonsOnline Hey, Thanks, but I'm having a bit of trouble tuning into that. Can you show a short video showing how to tune to that (using a tuner). I have a tuner, but I can't get that tune.

I'm new at the bass, switching over from drums, and I'm following your lessons. I tried this technique and I'm hearing a lot of buzz when I press down on the strings. What could it be?
If you have followed exactly what I say and demonstrate in this lesson, and have practiced for a few days, then it is possible that your bass neck is convex and needs a setup.
Just make sure you don't overdo it. Less more often is better than more less often in the early stages. Also make sure your pinkie is not stretched, i.e. keep it arched as shown in this video.
Thank you for your kind comments. These You Tube videos are only an insight into my teaching approach. My Beginner to Intermediate step-by-step course of Bass Lessons Online (available via my website) contains 50 lessons - all with video.

P.S. Don't forget to leave your house to play some gigs :)
Thank you very much for taking the time to make these videos. And make them understandable! I just got my bass today and already fell in love with it. I think if I do three of these a day, and actually practice them, I'll be really good in the future.
i'm struggling with this 4 fingers on one string technique. i have no musical background at all and i find moving each finger individually on one string hard.
did i not do it correctly?
i will keep on trying and see if i improve some
your videos are awesome and i can't thank you enough!
hey your videos are really helpful. i don't have a bass yet but i'm really looking to get one. is there any advice you could give me when i'm out looking? like what kind of bass would be good for a beginner?
@BassLessonsOnline XD I just got a Squier for Christmas, I already had a fender strat and I think playing that has helped me get a jump start on my bass guitar
Thanks for you professional videos. I've been playing lefty guitar for 30 years and I recently started home recording. I was using very rudimentary keyboard skills to record basslines but I'm getting frustrated by the lack of feel. To this end I've ordered a cheap and cheerful Ashton lefty bass which should arrive tomorrow. I bought one of their cheap acoustics and was well impressed. I think they may actually be an Aussie company.
I look forward to learning with you. Cheers. Eric.
Thanks for your support and request. First you must determine the reason for your fingers being stiff. Are they cold, do you do labor involving your hands etc?
If the cause is just inappropriate technique, then my online bass course will help you fix your "problem".
Hey George, Thank you for these video's, I just got my first Bass guitar today, I love it and your video's already make this fun. Though I need alot of practice, my writs already hurts and my pinky needs more training. hehe :D
Congratulations! Yes, it always hurts a bit at first, but I'm sure you will happily get through the pain. (Just make sure you don't overdo the same movements and stretches.)
i JUST literally picked up a bass and these first two lessons have really made it easier to understand, and im more willing to pick it up and work on it now, thank you so much!!!
Hey George. I've been playing bass for 10 years now, and realized that I've never even touched the slap bass style at all. Your lessons are helping me out so much. Keep it up!
Hi George - I'm an absolute beginner and I'm getting alot out of your videos, so thanks!
Just a couple of questions - I've got long arms and fingers, and found I was bending my left wrist around alot (about 80-90 degress) doing the hammering exercise, which wasn't very comfortable! Do you bend your left wrist at all, or is it all in the fingers?
Also, I'm getting a bit of fret buzz with the hammering exercise, but I think that's just because I'm not pushing hard enough on the strings?
Thanks for your kind comments and for your queries.
The left wrist is most bent when playing on the E string and not bent at all when playing on the G string. Even on the E string the bend angle should be no more than 45 degrees.
There are many positioning aspects you should check.
The hammer-on is not so much about pushing as it is about a rapid hammer motion.
Thank you so much for these videos, George. I have been playing for the past two weeks, on my own, with some help from more experienced friends - I have found your videos to be extremely well-made and helpful in rounding out my technique; you also settled some doubts I had. Greetings from Brazil!
i cant find a way to play 10 - 14 - 12 - 10 - 5 comfotably. Any suggestion to witch fingers i should play that with for the most comfortable experience and make it sound clean (when i play i dont get it as clean as you got it eighter. I get a bad sound from my bass)
your lessons really helped me ive been practicing your seconed lesson for a mouth and my friends keep asking me where im taking lessons thank you soo much you rock.
Thank you very much George. I´ve been searching for some good bass lessons for a long time. I think I finally found what I´ve been looking for. Unlike all the others there is that professionalism in your videos. I guess you´ve got yourself a new student from Czech Republic. ;-) :-D Thanks again, George
Thanks alot George. I got my bass about 2 days ago, im 16 and I am asspiring to play in a rock.metal, alternative band but I would also like to play blues and maybe someclassic rock and your lessons are trully for begginers that do help alot.
In the beginning it doesn't appear to matter that much. However, as you progress, you will see how certain techniques will either aid or hinder your playing.
@BassLessonsOnline I think youre technique is awesome and makes sense and i was wondering if you knew where i could find other left hand techniques at on the web that are free
thank you for your lessons... I play the bass without any technics just like it was a guitar with the pick but I'm trying to learn fingerstyle now and I'm attending your classes :D thanks a lot
i just got my bass a couple of days ago and my friend has been seaching me. i started using my fingers but i wasnt real quick with them and i couldnt get a good solid sound from it. he let me use his pick and it worked great, i am geting better at using my fingers but i have trouble cordinating the right frets with the right string. what advise can you give me for the pick vs fingers and cordinating the strings and frets
@LePeppers90 Start VERY slow and fret a note with your left pointer finger and using whatever right hand technique you aim to improve on. Then fret the the next fret higher with your left middle finger and so on. It might help to do this at the 7th fret at first because you really have to stretch on the lower frets. Practicing this is super easy and does not require you to learn a song yet, and so you can do this as a total beginner. Just start really slow and be critical of making clear sounds.

I am a younger person and just got my bass yesterday i do play music but trombone is what i play. Does knowing alot about the bass cleft help when going into bass as a beginner? Thanks for these videos i am getting better at bass already:)
Hello and thanks for providing some of your background and for your comment and queries.
Reading trombone bass clef is almost the same as bass bass clef. The difference is that the bass sounds an octave lower than notated. Therefore on bass you don't have to read below the stave. Your background will be very beneficial for your progress on bass.
sir, i started playing bass 6 months ago. back then i did not have a youtube account so i couldn't post any comments. the day i got a bass i discovered your videos. you helped me very much, thank you sir.
dear george, i really like this lesson cause i have some problems with my fingers to put on the frets.. but do you have a video which teaches you how to hold you fingers at the first 4 frets?
Hello Thomas ... and thanks for your comments and request.
I do not have such a video because I do not advocate using 4 fingers in the first 4 frets unless it is extremely useful and practical and will not lead to RSI problems.

There could be a number of reasons for fret buzz.
Here are a few possibilities:
incorrect setup (convex bass neck)
insufficient pressure of your fretting hand fingers
fretting too far away from the fret wire
If you have been playing bass for only a few days, your strength and stamina will not be developed yet.

Thank you very much for taking the time to make these videos. And make them understandable! I just got my bass today and already fell in love with it. I think if I do three of these a day, and actually practice them, I'll be really good in the future.
Again, thank you for all of your help. (:

@BassLessonsOnline hey george your videos are great.
i'm struggling with this 4 fingers on one string technique. i have no musical background at all and i find moving each finger individually on one string hard.
did i not do it correctly?
i will keep on trying and see if i improve some
your videos are awesome and i can't thank you enough!
trulyinfemous 1 year ago
Thanks for showing your appreciation.
You can practice the technique away from the bass, for example on a pencil :)

Thanks.
A good place to start your search is with Squier, Ibanez and Yamaha basses.

@BassLessonsOnline XD I just got a Squier for Christmas, I already had a fender strat and I think playing that has helped me get a jump start on my bass guitar
crackrory89 1 year ago
You are right. Playing guitar certainly helps with jump-starting your bass playing. Congratulations on your Squier!

Hi George.
Cheers. Eric.

thanks for the lessons george but can u help me out..i always got problem with picking the string cause my fingers a bit stiff what do u suggest
kmin13 1 year ago
Thanks for your support and request. First you must determine the reason for your fingers being stiff. Are they cold, do you do labor involving your hands etc?
If the cause is just inappropriate technique, then my online bass course will help you fix your "problem".
Kind regards,
George

Hi George - I'm an absolute beginner and I'm getting alot out of your videos, so thanks!
Just a couple of questions - I've got long arms and fingers, and found I was bending my left wrist around alot (about 80-90 degress) doing the hammering exercise, which wasn't very comfortable! Do you bend your left wrist at all, or is it all in the fingers?
Also, I'm getting a bit of fret buzz with the hammering exercise, but I think that's just because I'm not pushing hard enough on the strings?
Thanks!
JimDaBoff 1 year ago

I get a bad sound from my bass)
aannttee11 1 year ago
If you are referring to fret numbers on one string, you can play the same notes between frets 14 and 17 over 3 strings in one position.
I hope this helps.
George

does it really matter how you play the bass with your left hand as long as youre getting the right sound for the note youre playing?
daddydabbs 1 year ago
In the beginning it doesn't appear to matter that much. However, as you progress, you will see how certain techniques will either aid or hinder your playing.
George
BassLessonsOnline 1 year ago
@BassLessonsOnline I think youre technique is awesome and makes sense and i was wondering if you knew where i could find other left hand techniques at on the web that are free
daddydabbs 1 year ago
Thank you. YT has plenty of bass technique lessons. Just make sure you find what appears to suit you for the long term.
You can also go to bass-specific sites and forums, such as ActiveBass, Cyberfretbass etc.

i just got my bass a couple of days ago and my friend has been seaching me. i started using my fingers but i wasnt real quick with them and i couldnt get a good solid sound from it. he let me use his pick and it worked great, i am geting better at using my fingers but i have trouble cordinating the right frets with the right string. what advise can you give me for the pick vs fingers and cordinating the strings and frets
LePeppers90 1 year ago
A tip: Think "right and left TOGETHER".
George
BassLessonsOnline 1 year ago
@LePeppers90 Start VERY slow and fret a note with your left pointer finger and using whatever right hand technique you aim to improve on. Then fret the the next fret higher with your left middle finger and so on. It might help to do this at the 7th fret at first because you really have to stretch on the lower frets. Practicing this is super easy and does not require you to learn a song yet, and so you can do this as a total beginner. Just start really slow and be critical of making clear sounds.

Oh and also how do you lower the strings?
slasher970 1 year ago
There are two ways of lowering the strings.
1. The main adjustment is made on the bridge saddles.
2. The other adjustment happens "automatically" when you tighten the truss rod (which is best left to someone knowledgeable).

I am a younger person and just got my bass yesterday i do play music but trombone is what i play. Does knowing alot about the bass cleft help when going into bass as a beginner? Thanks for these videos i am getting better at bass already:)
slasher970 1 year ago
Hello and thanks for providing some of your background and for your comment and queries.
Reading trombone bass clef is almost the same as bass bass clef. The difference is that the bass sounds an octave lower than notated. Therefore on bass you don't have to read below the stave. Your background will be very beneficial for your progress on bass.
Kind regards,
George

dear george, i really like this lesson cause i have some problems with my fingers to put on the frets.. but do you have a video which teaches you how to hold you fingers at the first 4 frets?
Greetz, Thomas
Basstard22 1 year ago
Hello Thomas ... and thanks for your comments and request.
I do not have such a video because I do not advocate using 4 fingers in the first 4 frets unless it is extremely useful and practical and will not lead to RSI problems.
George
BassLessonsOnline 1 year ago
@BassLessonsOnline aah okay then. can you give me some kind of an idea how you play the first 4 frets? (just by a simple explanation)
Greets Thomas

Sure, just play one finger per fret.
