  • @Cambionx Newton's scratch-plated guitar is actually Eric Roche's, it got passed onto him by Nick Benjamin after Eric died. I don't know if it's the same one that's in this video, though.

  • I was lucky enough to be taught by him on two occasions at Bath Gutar festival, an absolute legend on the guitar,he was and still is an inspiration to me. He had talent that i can only dream of. God bless you Eric

    Bob Newcastle

  • god bless

  • He plays guitar with his whole body.

  • @TheEditingShop naaah he plays whole guitar )

  • On the lower part of Eric's guitar near the neck, there's a bit which he uses for scraping, guiro-like techniques. Did he achieve that through wearing the finish down, or is there a different type of finish/ a coating on that area? Thanks to anyone who can answer this : )

  • @ILiveForScience I think that in Eric's case he has worn the finish down but i do know that you can actually get a sort of plate to put on the guitar that doesn't affect the tone. I've seen one on one of Newton Faulkner's guitars in a lot of the videos here on youtube.

  • @ILiveForScience

Yeh, it looks as if he has worn the finish in that area, but if your looking to achieve this affect on your own guitar and don't want to wreck the finish, your best off going to your local guitar store or getting someone who knows what they are doing to glue on a thin piece of timber to that area which has no finish on it. Artists like Newton Faulkner and Thomas Leeb have done this and it sounds awesome. Check out Leeb's Desert Pirate video ;) Hope this helps :)

  • The kind of guitarist I love, he can show off his skills without having a massive ego or being really big headed, the same as Thomas Leeb and Newton Faulkner, he must've been a great guitar tutor to have :)

  • When it comes to losing great guitar talents, we owe it to them to practice and improve and develop what they brought into the world.

  • \m/!

  • Taught Thomas Leeb & Faulkner, leg

  • he flies through the whole song

  • Rock In Peace Eric Roche

  • he reminds me of one of those video game characters that bounce constantly no matter what they're doing.... haha, but some true talent here. can see where newton got his talent from.

  • You can tell he was newton's teacher

  • The guy who taught Newton Faulkner.

  • The bests die first, sad but true.

  • This man had the music in his heart - music was the part of him. Genius, but just a nice guy too. So sad, that he's gone.

  • I dunno who this is, maybe he is before me? but he is awesome

Too bad he passed, how did he pass though?

  • Love Eric:) Does any one know where i can get the tab 4 this???

  • @MusoJTM His website most probably

  • Was an honour to see Eric at Music Live at the NEC in Birmingham back in 2000. So fortunate to have seen him at such a high point in his career and was able to chat to him for 20 minutes like me and my dad were the only ones in the room! Awesome.

  • just incredible - i can see where Newton Faulkner got his inspiration from!

  • @bigbadmateus Well he were taught by him after all =-P

  • @DannyTinker yep! that's why i commented on it :)

  • I saw Eric at the acoustic avalon at leicester a few years ago and bought his CD, i'll have to dig it out of the collection soon and have a good listen...

    He performed flawlessly...

    RIP Eric...

  • Quiet without being shy, confident without being arrogant and talented without being snobbish, Eric was one of musics true legends.

He rewrote the rule book of what a guitar is capable of and has redefined the term "Talent" again and again.

    We will miss you Eric...

  • I had the pleasure of meeting Eric several times. The last time was shortly before his death at a benefit gig. He was clearly unwell but played a blinding set and was the most positive person to talk to afterwards, not even mentioning his own discomfort. R.I.P. Eric but you live forever, you left a positive legacy that most people wont.

  • RIP Eric you will be greatly missed by all those who love true guitar innovation

newton faulkner wrote a tribute to Eric (Eric was a massive inspiration to Newton) look it up guys

    "So Much"

  • @jonnymobs790 So did Guthrie Govan, it's called "Eric", on his Erotic Cakes album.

  • You can see he's got a microphone on his right cheek.

He only wore it to hide the tumour, bless him...

  • this man its my personal hero

  • I remember watching this video over a year ago.. and now I'm still amazed by his playing..

  • one word ..... PRO

  • what a ledge

  • Eric taught me at the ACM in guildford some years back..he kept me back one day and we talked about theory and his views on music..was amazing..

He said when hes walking down a road the street lights were like giant notes and the wind came in rhythms and everything would be like a giant piece of music to him.

Was a really nice guy too :)

  • why do great musicians suddenly disappear nowadays.. ..

  • Woooow, amazing, magical, wherever you are, Mr. Roche, respect ...

  • Pretty Sweet :)

  • Oh my gosh! This guy does things to the guitar that should be illegal! Holy cow, I am completely awestruck. Just when I thought I was getting pretty good on the guitar, and then I watch this video. Wow. One day I'd like to be like that. Amazing, simply amazing. Wow.

  • Gone too soon ! He was a very good great groove guy. RIP Eric !

  • that's sooooo groovy!

  • @XxZaCkXx34 what kind of sticker? I sanded through the finish on one of my guitars, and the washboard effect worked. That was on a spruce soundboard. But I was messing with a cheap guitar with a rosewood soundboard, and i tried to sand through the finish but the wood is way too smooth to washboard on. If ya could fill me in on yer secret, that would be awesome ;)

  • Great idea! saves me from ruining the finish, thanks!

  • thats pretty sick

  • he sees the guitar as a whole not just a pear-shaped wood with strings.. he certainly rocks!

  • Not that there's anything wrong with a pear-shaped wood with strings.

  • does anyone know how he gets that scratchy effect on his guitar? has he sanded it away on the area below and to the right of the hole?

  • he just swipes that area with his thumb pick, and that it just looks sanded because hes done it so much

  • It's roughed up in some way...he would of been using either real nail or plastic glue on ones. In his GT column he always recommended cheap boots glue on nails and as far as I know he's never used a thumbpick or acrylic/silk wrap nails but I could be wrong.

  • Thomas Leeb does something similar and I know that he has like a "scratch board" type thing below his sound hole.

  • Is there an mp3 of this anywhere? I seriously want to get my hands on it.

  • use freeware program "no23" to cut the audio from the vid

  • amazing, wow

  • Rest in peice man and you have touched many people with your music.

  • listening to this cos some lady drives me crazy right now.

feels so much better than the original one. of course it is great too.

    rest in peace mate

  • Rest in peace, with respect

    Cl.

  • wow.. this guy is the best man! i just read mickiminx' comment.. so he's dead eh... may he rest in peace.. such a great talent... may his work live on forever...

  • Eric's wife Candy is a friend of mine & I'm very, very, very proud to say that I knew him, he was one of the sweetest, kindest people with a fantastic sense of humour you could ever meet! (Apart from being a fantastic guitarist of course! )

Just to clarify things, he died from Oral cancer, not some 'rare' form of cancer. (I know this as he & my mother went through the same thing at the same time.)

I wish he was still here, as he was truly one in a million. xxx

  • lol this guy is the greatest he trained newton faulkner

  • he is sooooo groovy what you on :D

  • He Is Amazing

  • I discovered him on guthrie govan's booklet...The (awesome) song eric is dedicated to him...he's amazing...

  • He got some rare form of cancer.

Born in New York he moved to Kerry in Ireland with his family at a young age.

    Great musician

  • I never heard of Eric Roche until I discovered him on youtube yesterday. Where was he from & how did he die?

  • I discovered him through Newton Faulkner.

Eric Roche died from throat cancer aged 37 and left his wife Candy and his two children, Stefan and Francesca.

what an inspiration this man was to me. He was my guitar teacher at college, I remember not really liking him at the time cause he always picked on me for not knowing my theory!!, feel quite bad now. for what it's worth i brushed up on it in the end. A genious of the guitar, unfairly taken from us. RIP xx

  • Were you at the Guitar Institute in Ealing?

  • omg im so sorry to hear he died ... I had no idea ... Anyway, let his songs be remmembered it's all we can do now.

  • I e mailed Eric some years back (when he was writing for GT magazine) re advice about my right hand nails. He sent a very long e mail back about two days later,, even though he must have been very busy. A truly great guitarist, with no ego, just a willingness to share his knowledge. he is sadly missed.

  • @jamiegtr2007 Dude, post his mail reply please!!!

  • @panpinponponio75 Sorry, don't know where i put the e mail print out . If I find it, you can send me your e mail address, and I will send you a scan of the e mail it. I think i deleted original e mail, and only kept the "print out"

  • one of the best

  • how

  • so sad that such good talent was lost

  • RIP Eric Roche, he is great

  • this video is amazing. eric roche is an acoustic guitar GOD

  • man why is andy mckee more acclaimed than this guy?

this is better than "drifting" and it's only a cover as well!

  • because andy was able to benefit from his exposure more do to Eric's untimely death, you cant hate on either of these guys man

  • and the fact that eric roche what one of the first to bring purcussive techniques onto the guitar

  • He's a legend.

  • True, true.

  • Love the Fine Young Cannibals. And this rendition is jus WOW. what can i say.speechless Great share Marty.. :)

  • wonderful

  • a GIANT of the acoustic guitar.

  • yeah i agree that this has so little views its so skillfully awsome and its spelt andy mckee;)

    r.i.p

  • Holy shit, RIP? You mean he's dead too? :(

Man, this always seems to happen when I find amazing guitarists. First Michael Hedges, then Eric Roche? Are you kidding me???

  • ino ino its so sad but yea he got throat cancer 2004-2005 he'll never be forgotten tho..

  • That's wicked sick. Just don't get it why this movie has so few views, this is sicker than Andy McGee.

  • too bad he is gone :'(

  • does anyone have a transcription of this or know if he ever did it for guitar techniques mag?

  • I don't think he's done it for GT. He took the Hedges version and expanded on that one. Maybe that one is a good place to get the basics, then move on to Eric's.

  • I was at this gig, what an amazing and ore inspiring performance,

    It was Brill!

  • Such an amzing guitarist! RIP.

  • RIP

I got to see him playing not long before he died.

He said he had recovered, but I guess it came back.

If you believe in god ask him why he takes the best ones.

  • Awesome!!

  • Only just discovered Eric and at the same time learn that he's dead. What a loss! They say only the good die young and he would seem to support that idea. An amazing talent and ability and a sad loss

  • i love it so much

  • oh my god,, that was amazing

  • legand this guy might get me to uni rip eric and thank you so much x

  • is there a tab for this anywhere?

  • although i like the original... it shows that if you give a great guitarist a shitty pop song, they can make it into something more beautiful than the writers imagined... RIP eric roche, what a guy xxx

  • thanx

  • Awesome. He's unreal.

  • wow this guy was awesome i need to thank chantaldawn for leading me to this great talent

  • 3:10-3:25, gets me every single time. Don't get me wrong, his entire performance is ridiculously good, but that harmony in those 15 seconds just washed over me when I listen to it and it never fails to send shivers up and down my spine.

    RIP

These clips are a treat. We love him always.

DOES ANY ONE HAVE A COPY OF HIS LIVE VIDEO OR DVD - I WILL BUY AT ANY PRICE OR PAY FOR A COPY.

    Big love to all

  • Hi Gibbyone,

Eric Roche's website is still up & running, you can buy his merchandise on there. Such a shame he's not around anymore, I was lucky enough to know him & he was a wonderful person. It's great to see him remembered on youtube.

  • What a great cover!

  • he had throat cancer and died 2005

    R.I.P

  • I knew his family, didn't know him that well though. He had a wife, a son and a daughter.

  • It seems like the good dies young, for example him, Jimi hendrix, SRV, and many more.

  • Michael Hedges!

  • What a great guitarist!

  • I had the great honour of seeing Eric live and saying Hi and shaking his hand and everyone was blown away by his performance. He was a great guy.

  • 3 pedals i think i count six mic pickups wat a great idea sounds awesome never thought of slapping my guitar like a drum seems obvious now

  • I want hear your guitar music more, eric.

so sad that I can not.

  • Amazing. RIP Eric.

  • is erick dead ??? what happened to him ????

  • he died of throat cancer.

  • this is the guy that taught Newton Faulkner how to play geetar, you can tell he was a massive influence

  • great stuff one of a kind great sound too yeap a huge thumbs up from ireland

  • fantastic! This is one song I couldn't have imagined being played on guitar this way!

  • How does he make that dj scratching sound?

  • I thought he was using his thumb to hit the base strings or scratching his guitar or something... I'ma try to figure that one out because it sounds pretty sweet.

  • He makes the scratching sound with his RH fingernails on the lower bout beneath the neck join. It might not sound the same if you or I did it because his guitar had all manner of pickups and mics positioned around the inside, hence the (at least) 2 leads that he's using.

  • Simply magical! i cannot overstate how good this is! would have loved to see eric live :(

tarby777 is right. i've been mucking about with this playing style for a while. i have a yamaha cpx8 that has both a piezo mic and a suspended condensor mic. the piezo which features on most electro-acoustic guitars struggles to pick up any 'acoustic percussion' whereas the suspended mic works a treat. you also need to bear in mind that eric uses a serious amount of reverb in this performance.... :)
