@nextpkf : The battle system is fucking bullshit, but it's not the only shit that i dont wanna see in a FF anymore
where the towns ? the maps ? the airship ? the freedom of speaking to anyone and traveling where you want ? no way that was the biggest fuck up i have never seen
you keep walking the same path for 10hrs without me
you run around on Pulsar for 50hrs killing the same mobs without me.
Got it ? or to stupid to understand what a RPG is ?
@sulfurn1986 The design of the game was lacking, no doubt about it, but the battle system was fantastic. The system was acclaimed by critics, with many calling it the best in the series and one or two even proclaiming it the best in the GENRE.
XIII had BIG issues, but its battle system was brilliant. Like I said, its not the battle systems fault if youre too stupid to understand it. Anyone who thinks all you do in XIII is press X (as opposed to the older FFs...) needs to wake up.
@Melee2Kil XIIIs battle system is critically acclaimed, look it up. It was called the best in the GENRE. And its pretty clear why, its a fantastic system.
My theory is people who dont like it either only played the first few hours of the game, or never gave it a chance because it was different. It takes far more strategy than older FF battle systems, thats undeniable.
And in case youre wondering, Ive played and finished every main FF title (minus 11 and 14 obviously).
@nextpkfr i understand why they stripped it down, to make the battles more fast pace, but that still doesn't justify, them taking away the control of the other 2 members of the party... and paradigms are all well and good, but i'd much rather controll all 3 myself, i mean the could even keep the changing roles aspect..., just stop using ai... and give us the control back, even if it means slowing down the speed of the battles...
@DaRkLoRd1061 I agree in general, I wish they had let us control all three party members, but the system did work anyway. You see the commands werent really what controlled the party in XIII. How you controlled them was the roles, and you DID control the roles of all three characters.
Just like in older FFs where youd think 'Oh I need that character to heal the others', in FFXIII youd think 'Oh Ill switch that character to a Medic'. Same with attacking/debuffing/etc.
@nextpkfr true, but still for ff15 at least i still feel that i would like a bit more control, i did however really like the stagger bar, and the after battle report with the star rating i thought that was a pretty cool addition... but overall it was a good system, it was certainly different and it's good to mix it up abit from time to time, and i'm glad they're keeping it for ff13-2, but i hope they change it for ff15...
@nextpkfr Ok yeah mostly it was fine, but paradigms killed it for me, you shouldn't have to go through all the effort of changing them to cast 1 spell you want then you watch the stupid animation again to go back to the battle. Another thing was the enemies health being way to high, they would deal no damage to me but I'd have to wait around for a few minutes while my character dealed out enough damage. And your characters can fly.. are these even part of of the battle system? < RANT
@Melee2Kil That is definitely a legitimate complaint. Those animations while you switched paradigms were fucking annoying. Fortunately thats been fixed for XIII-2 (shifts are instant now).
About enemies having health too high, it sounds like you werent using the system properly. Im guessing when it was taking minutes to kill enemies you werent getting five stars? XIIIs battles always felt fast too me. Faster than older FFs anyway.
@nextpkfr probably because this game plays by itself... the combat system is ridiculous, paradigms in FF12 werent that bad, now its just nosense autopilot, go throw the game to watch the beutiful cutscenes and anoying childish voices, i wish they took the sound back jajaj
My fav game ever... Great battle system. I don't have to control the movement of the character Like ff type-0.... Easy for just focus on the paradigm. The story actually is not to bad. Kinda like it..
Wow, I really loved the battle system. It made battles more interesting and less tedious. Oh, well. I'm the only person in the world that thought this was one of the best final fantasies lol.

@FebruarysOS And perhaps if the story wasn't out in left field. Get rid of pain, brick back Kimahri. Rikku needs to put some clothes on. She's 2 years older (I think it was 2 years), and she still acts like she's 9. Wakka and Lulu, even Yuna, grew up a lot in those two years. Rikku was still annoying as fuck. I'd bang the shit out of her, and never phone her again. I'd rather communicate with a post.

If you don't mash the auto button and actually put the controls in yourself, it's actually pretty interesting. You have to shift a lot of paradigms as well in order to get the real hard battles going. I thought the battle system was a lot of fun... The fast pace of it gave you really little time to just sit there doing nothing... You were always doing something during battles, so I thought it was pretty fun...
no 13 sux but 13-2 is waaaaaaaaaaayyyy better. the story on this sucked and there were no side trails during the game. when they made 13-2 they kicked the whole team that made 13 and hired new ppl. its much better. and yes 7 is the best one they ever made :D
@TheFinal360 the rest are less animated because of the consoles they were on, remember that ff7-9 were all on the ps1, and it didnt improve dynamically until ffx or x-2
the newer ones from square-enix are just confusing... i was so dissapointed when i picked it up, being a long FF fan, i expected the battle system would revert back to normal after the negative feedback from FFXII but no, it's even more convoluted and confusing, plus, you can only control 1 guy, WTF?
FF10 hit the spot the moment it hit and was the best FF game ever FF7 was boring to me so yeah 10 and 12 I loved an FFX-2 was just another game with Yuna and Rikku
I`m only worring about, that will I become good at using this battle system. How could this be fun if I wont? And it`s really complicated. Do you really have to know how to use every single little thing to beat the hardest parts of this game? Or is it just simply too complicated, and you could beat this came with a less talent of using the battle system? I have playd only 4 hours, so I can`t really tell anything. Tell me guys, how hard this game is? I have beat FF7. It was a bit challenging.
people keep talking about how the battle system for XIII is terrible. this vid is pretty badass even with AUTO. i dont own a ps3 or an xbox, so i cant really get one. is it really that bad?
@roxel6 It's not really that terrible. It's just that you can easily get through most of the battle by simply mashing X (auto battle). and you have little control of the battles because it goes too fast. It's more like you're watching it rather than playing it. I know what you mean though. but once you get to play the game, it's really nothing more and repetitive X button pressing. Other than that, the game is still wonderful.
@terrahotaru yea but if u say that then all the final fantasies are nothing but that and I played 7-13.Personally 7,8 are one of my favs however I love 13 a bit more cause the battle system is fast paced which causes u to think on ur feet in tight situations which I like. In the past series u don't really have to do such a thing cause u have time to come up with a plan to eliminate ur enemies ex:nights of the round, and eden, ff10 u just have all the time in the world.as for all the stories love
@jayhow92 Then turn off auto-battle you douche. I swear, all the people complaining about this game's battles being too "auto" are fucking retards. TURN OFF AUTO-BATTLE THEN GODDDDDDDDDDD
@yoyoyo88665 The game is practically pushing you to use the auto-battling system. I didn't and it was still just as easy. I was actually offended that Square thought we were too incompetent to handle anything tougher. It clearly favors the newbs rather than veterans. Casts your buffs, debuff the boss, diversity/relentess assult until the staggering point, then aggression/relentless assult until the bonus is over. Not that hard. The summons were completely useless!
Final fantasy battles were the best before VII. There was no time limit for your turns to you had a chance to think and plan your attacks. this also gave you time to look through the 1000 itams in your bag to pick the right one before you got killed. the fanfare was better from I - VI also to boot. thumbs up for all the best but forgotton FF games! ^_^
@Duharharhar Honestly, Kingdom Hearts had the best battle system of any Final Fantasy Game. Sure a lot of button Smashing but you only control 1 character, it's simple and most important, IT'S REAL TIME
I guess I'm another one of the old timers, who miss the slow paced, and controllable fight systems of the old FF-games. I don't understand how people can figure out what the hell is going on in these fights? There's numbers everywhere, I can't for the life of me see who's losing what, and how much! Meh, I'm getting old..
@Jurgemaister1 The only thing I miss from the old FF battle system is the Over-Drive/Drive or whatever it was, that was my favorite part of the game. I would level up all my characters and Aeons just to Over-Drive the hell out of every Boss...especially Seymour :D
The CTB-System of FF X was just the best. The battle systems that came after that were either confusing or not thought through... I miss FF X. Sad, that they didn't adapt it for PS3. I think a lot of people would've liked it.
So disappointing. Ever since ff7 square has been oversimplifying ff games into cinema with interspersed button presses. This is the most stripped version so far. You control 1 character, can't control who's in your party for an enormous part of the game, 1 wpn 1acessory, ridiculously linear storyline until.... couldn't get that far....
I keep hearing this word "stripped" or "simplified" in relation to FFXIII, but I'm finding it a lot tougher than FFXII. Which is why I think people coming to this conclusion never played it long enough.
@Crusina turn based: A turn-based strategy (TBS) game is a strategy game (usually some type of wargame, especially a strategic-level wargame) where players take turns when playing. This is distinguished from real time strategy where all players play simultanteously. The phrase refers almost exclusively to video games.
The ATB or active battle system does not respect the turns, having to wait it's not turn based because the game does not wait for you and what are you 11 yo child? be polite please
So going "thumbs up" "sucks" and "biased opinion" is so much more mature?
Oh I cussed, big deal. If you were so much more mature you'd have simply ignored that remark and simply concentrated on my other remark. Instead you feel the need to point out something that is fairly irreverent to the main argument. Now be the "big boy" and don't respond to this part.
Nonetheless, you make a very valid point. Do you mean to say Final Fantasy VI (Best game ever IMO >.>) is not turn based?
I liked the turn based system better because it gave me a chance to actually think about my next move ( I don't usually go balls to the wall with action). It was very confusing in XII for me because I didn't really know what I was doing in the battle. I would focus on one character and the others would die off.
This however, looks promising. I got this game as an X-mas gift and very excited to play =D. I do miss the sphere grid though from FFX....
Final Fantasy X (10) has better story, better battle system and better characters (save for Sazh and the Chocobo chick). The only thing that is better about Final Fantasy 13 is the platform and the graphics used. Haters please don't hate as this is my own opinion but many gamers will agree, FF10>FF13 marginally. (I didn't say that nothing was too bad did I?
the new battle system is rly good... maybe if yall didnt SUCK at it than it wld be fun . plus turn based system thing that was in all of the other final fantasy games was getting over rated . it was fun back then but now the new system is deffintly more challenging and YES u might die sometimes but thts y they have the paradigm system TRY MORE STRADIGIES n quit bitching about this master piece . i hope they keep this battle system for awile . and the characters and the story was really good too
Final Fantasy X was the best game i've ever played beacause of the battle strategy, and i was so disapointed with FF XII, sure graphic and scenery is beautiful, but battle system is horryble. It doesn't let you enjoy the game, everything is so fast and you can't control shit. Everything is automatic, and confusing, it sucks!!! And also enemies seem like nothing just bunch of robots. You know what , even the story sucks
@nikola3201 Final Fantasy VII Dirge of Cerberus had the best battle system (Never played VII on PS), FFXII had the worse but FFX battle system was boring and repetitive, but the story was one of the best in the series. FFX-2 is like a good orgasm, starts off really exciting then...eh, NEXT..so in all for PS2 FFX was the best despite the terrible battle system and graphics (at that time) cause the story was excellent
@nikola3201 in all final fantasies... does it only let you attack with those screen pop ups? it doesn't let you attack manually by just pressing the buttons?
@nikola3201 FF12 has one of the best battle systems if you use it right, you dont have to keep button bashing like you do on every other FF game...I seriously dont get why people say 12 has a bad battle system...if anything was bad from 12 it was the story, not the gambit system...and the espers were pretty useless
@MrNotRetardo i didn't get thought first part sure , because i couldn't play it :) , it was so annoying the battle system, so many numbers pooping on the screen you can't even see what the hell is going on. You have no time to THINK the strategy you use for the next round, that's what made the previoust FF so great, the strategy, and here you just rush and press the same button over and over again. dissapointing sorry dude
@nikola3201 well theres 2 ways to play did u try both thats probably y one is where when u press the action buttonand the game pauses and lets u decide and the the people start fighting again the other is probably what ur talking about but ur opinion is ur opinion
@nikola3201 well theres 2 ways to play did u try both thats probably y one is where when u press the action buttonand the game pauses and lets u decide and the the people start fighting again the other is probably what ur talking about but ur opinion is ur opinion
@nikola3201 haha actually the people who didnt enjoy ff13 are those guys that cant play complex games.. LOL i pity you for being one of them.. FYI this game had a lot of strategy in it.. fail my friend.. fail
@knucklesp Strategy? Lol. I'll say previous Final Fantasys have been pretty basic, but don't say 13 requires strategy. I think I might have died twice the entire game.
The Final Fantasy series has never been about extremely difficult gameplay....I've never really seen stupid in that magnitude. Thank you. You've introduced me to a brand new breed of human being.
@DGrant1010 I know what you mean ! but still the first FF battles were really more insteresting than those in FF13. Dont you remember yunalesca ? dark aeons ? jecht ? last weapons ? Ultimecia ? Jenovah ? beatrix/steiner fights in alexandria ? when Balamb gets attaceked ? Edea ? and more That was fucking epic dude.
Unfortunately, there is no epic battle in the FF13 and FF12 by the way. nothinh to compare to the 7-8-9-10.
@sulfurn1986 Oh I agree. I was just letting that guy know he is borderline retarded. People don't enjoy FF XIII because it's too complex? Really? You hold down UP and press X for 15 hours then clap your hands because it's over.
The previous Final Fantasies had amazing battles. Not because they were hard, but because of the story driven behind it. Well, Beatrix owned, but thats it :). Actually, Yunalesca killed me once, but because I didn't realize I was being turned to a zombie.
@sulfurn1986 ff12 had some pretty difficult boss fight possibly some of the hardest in the series it's just not worth putting the hours in to get to them as the gambit system makes it so fucking repetitive tha i get bored half way through most of the time...
Ahhh, poor blinded fan, unable to appreciate a great game because of your nostalgia. If you approach it determined to hate it, of course you will! I found it a very enjoyable ride, sure it could be improved upon, but it's definatly worthy of the title. I'm getting sick of all the butthurt fans who just want VII's and X's. Each game is it's own unique experiance, there is no such thing as a "classic final fantasy game", so stop looking for it.
@nohozana i think so too! No tatics, no thinking...only one choice, then sit back ahd watch. what a shame...suche beatiful graphics and no time to enjoy,,,,too much frentic information onscreen
@drxwnedxwxrld ahhh little child hurt over an opinion of a terrible game,I'm sorry but this game suck's to me and a fair amount of people who have been following this series from the begining.the story is poor, the battle system is terrible and the characters are fucking annoying, but since you like it keep playin it. at least some people can enjoy it.
@nohozana lulz. Just saying... I don't see how they're "lazy". The battle system was done pretty well in this game (Idgaf if you like it or not), the graphics were top notch (duh??), although I admit they were missing some parts. But even so, FFXII, a game by Square Enix, is hated by many nostalgic fans for no valid reason (it wasn't "epic"? the battle system is lame because it's real time?).
I like the previous battle system, the Turn based ATB wherein you can actually control all characters. For some reasons, FF XII battle system was not as challenging as those of its predecessors.. why? The AI was too smart. I just have to keep pressing X to win. But no wonder, the graphics were great.. Heh.. Heh..
wow... fast paced turn style... I miss FF7 and 8 style where there is time to slow down and think... im planning on getting this game tonight, and by the looks of it it will take some getting used to...
hey was this ff13-2?? then why this is not the battle gameplay that I heard in ff13-2's battle music??

no 13 sux but 13-2 is waaaaaaaaaaayyyy better. the story on this sucked and there were no side trails during the game. when they made 13-2 they kicked the whole team that made 13 and hired new ppl. its much better. and yes 7 is the best one they ever made :D

For me this is the best battle system of all final fantasy, the others are too slow and less animated... except for x and so on.
TheFinal360 8 months ago
@TheFinal360 the rest are less animated because of the consoles they were on, remember that ff7-9 were all on the ps1, and it didnt improve dynamically until ffx or x-2
the newer ones from square-enix are just confusing... i was so dissapointed when i picked it up, being a long FF fan, i expected the battle system would revert back to normal after the negative feedback from FFXII but no, it's even more convoluted and confusing, plus, you can only control 1 guy, WTF?

WTF IS GOING ON! SO MANY DAMN NUMBERS AND FLASHY THANGS!
o.o
pliouso 8 months ago 23

@pliouso Those numbers are the HP/SP that decreases or increases the amount what the numbers tell you
Example: you take -450 damage that means you take that -450 damage that tells you
and if you healed +50 HP or SP that means your HP/SP has healed that amount. understand.
And not to be rude.

Antsaboy94 9 months ago
Yeah, I miss ff 7,8 and 9 battle system :P

so u beat an enemy by staggering them?
redshirts23 9 months ago
people keep talking about how the battle system for XIII is terrible. this vid is pretty badass even with AUTO. i dont own a ps3 or an xbox, so i cant really get one. is it really that bad?
roxel6 9 months ago
@roxel6 It's not really that terrible. It's just that you can easily get through most of the battle by simply mashing X (auto battle). and you have little control of the battles because it goes too fast. It's more like you're watching it rather than playing it. I know what you mean though. but once you get to play the game, it's really nothing more and repetitive X button pressing. Other than that, the game is still wonderful.
terrahotaru 9 months ago
@terrahotaru yea but if u say that then all the final fantasies are nothing but that and I played 7-13.Personally 7,8 are one of my favs however I love 13 a bit more cause the battle system is fast paced which causes u to think on ur feet in tight situations which I like. In the past series u don't really have to do such a thing cause u have time to come up with a plan to eliminate ur enemies ex:nights of the round, and eden, ff10 u just have all the time in the world.as for all the stories love
rockafobia 7 months ago
..You fan boys can bark. But, I loved the battle system from the beginning to the end.
Goodsan7 10 months ago
The only things I didn't like with the battle system were:
Why did you lose when you party leader died? WTF?
Auto-battling sucks! The AI initiates the commands while you spam x. There's no skill in that.
Why did your guys recover fully after every fight? What were the point of potions?
We should have been able to control our formations. They always like to clump together or form a straight line, so they all get hit.
It would have been nice to see a new weapon in battle when it was equipped.
jayhow92 10 months ago
@jayhow92 Then turn off auto-battle you douche. I swear, all the people complaining about this game's battles being too "auto" are fucking retards. TURN OFF AUTO-BATTLE THEN GODDDDDDDDDDD
yoyoyo88665 10 months ago
@yoyoyo88665 The game is practically pushing you to use the auto-battling system. I didn't and it was still just as easy. I was actually offended that Square thought we were too incompetent to handle anything tougher. It clearly favors the newbs rather than veterans. Casts your buffs, debuff the boss, diversity/relentess assult until the staggering point, then aggression/relentless assult until the bonus is over. Not that hard. The summons were completely useless!
jayhow92 10 months ago
@jayhow92 It's pushing you, but you don't have to. And LOL, what you stated is more than what most FF's require you to do in fights.
yoyoyo88665 10 months ago
i love this... the new battle system is epic and easy... but well the ff7 is the best
ChibiiTeam 10 months ago
Final fantasy battles were the best before VII. There was no time limit for your turns to you had a chance to think and plan your attacks. this also gave you time to look through the 1000 itams in your bag to pick the right one before you got killed. the fanfare was better from I - VI also to boot. thumbs up for all the best but forgotton FF games! ^_^
Duharharhar 10 months ago
@Duharharhar Honestly, Kingdom Hearts had the best battle system of any Final Fantasy Game. Sure a lot of button Smashing but you only control 1 character, it's simple and most important, IT'S REAL TIME

I guess I'm another one of the old timers, who miss the slow paced, and controllable fight systems of the old FF-games. I don't understand how people can figure out what the hell is going on in these fights? There's numbers everywhere, I can't for the life of me see who's losing what, and how much! Meh, I'm getting old..
Jurgemaister1 10 months ago
@Jurgemaister1 The only thing I miss from the old FF battle system is the Over-Drive/Drive or whatever it was, that was my favorite part of the game. I would level up all my characters and Aeons just to Over-Drive the hell out of every Boss...especially Seymour :D
djbluetoothremixes 10 months ago
I miss the battle system where you have to wait, like FF6, 7, 8, etc
BlazingNetwork 10 months ago
The CTB-System of FF X was just the best. The battle systems that came after that were either confusing or not thought through... I miss FF X. Sad, that they didn't adapt it for PS3. I think a lot of people would've liked it.

So disappointing. Ever since ff7 square has been oversimplifying ff games into cinema with interspersed button presses. This is the most stripped version so far. You control 1 character, can't control who's in your party for an enormous part of the game, 1 wpn 1acessory, ridiculously linear storyline until.... couldn't get that far....
sezzyg 1 year ago
@sezzyg
I keep hearing this word "stripped" or "simplified" in relation to FFXIII, but I'm finding it a lot tougher than FFXII. Which is why I think people coming to this conclusion never played it long enough.

@solidsnake434 that wasn't ATB though. that was ATB's Bastard child. If you want ATB you need to play any of the games before 10.

Crusina 11 months ago
@CheeseTruncheon oh i have played previous FF games with ATB they are more accurate than this one but i never liked it
solidsnake434 11 months ago
@solidsnake434
It is turn based dumbass. If it wasn't turn based, you wouldn't have to wait.
What it is, is a speed up version of the ATB system employed by many FF games.
Crusina 11 months ago
@Crusina turn based: A turn-based strategy (TBS) game is a strategy game (usually some type of wargame, especially a strategic-level wargame) where players take turns when playing. This is distinguished from real time strategy where all players play simultanteously. The phrase refers almost exclusively to video games.
The ATB or active battle system does not respect the turns, having to wait it's not turn based because the game does not wait for you and what are you 11 yo child? be polite please
solidsnake434 11 months ago
@solidsnake434

@MrNotRetardo i didn't get thought first part sure , because i couldn't play it :) , it was so annoying the battle system, so many numbers pooping on the screen you can't even see what the hell is going on.
DGrant1010 3 months ago
@DGrant1010 I know what you mean ! but still the first FF battles were really more insteresting than those in FF13. Dont you remember yunalesca ? dark aeons ? jecht ? last weapons ? Ultimecia ? Jenovah ? beatrix/steiner fights in alexandria ? when Balamb gets attaceked ? Edea ? and more That was fucking epic dude.
Unfortunately, there is no epic battle in the FF13 and FF12 by the way. nothinh to compare to the 7-8-9-10.
sulfurn1986 2 months ago
@sulfurn1986 Oh I agree. I was just letting that guy know he is borderline retarded. People don't enjoy FF XIII because it's too complex? Really? You hold down UP and press X for 15 hours then clap your hands because it's over.
The previous Final Fantasies had amazing battles. Not because they were hard, but because of the story driven behind it. Well, Beatrix owned, but thats it :). Actually, Yunalesca killed me once, but because I didn't realize I was being turned to a zombie.

@nohozana lulz. Just saying... I don't see how they're "lazy". The battle system was done pretty well in this game (Idgaf if you like it or not), the graphics were top notch (duh??), although I admit they were missing some parts.
