  • their cantonese is the pure/old time accent cantonese. Nowaday most cantonese in hk has a "lazy" accent and words are not pronounced as clearly.

  • @connie59do

True - but for beginners it's helpful. Very few, if any, published learning materials have dispensed with the distinctions between l/n, have dropped the -w after k, g etc etc. - and all romanization systems for Cantonese still reflect that standard.

Ideally, we could have authentic materials that reflect the linguistic reality of the average 打工仔 or high school student - but it would take a lot of work putting that together - and it would still not be the way that ALL HKers speak.

  • 鹽焗雞

A traditional Cantonese dish usually translated as Salt-baked Chicken or sth close.

If you Google Cantonese Salt-baked Chicken and maybe the characters 鹽焗雞, you'll be able to find a picture and a recipe

  • Mr. Wong: Waiter, we'd like a yihm guhk Chicken. Mm...Miss Lee, what other dishes do you want?

Miss Lee: Sauteed Chinese Broccoli with Beef, mm...a whole chicken is too much for the two of us. A half will do. Let's have some Water cress Soup, shall we?

Mr. Wong: Ok. You really know how to order dishes. Waiter, can you bring it as soon as possible, please.

Miss Lee: It's really good here. I'll have to bring my mother along some time.
