I watch a program about the american goverment and the germans scientists and them saying the badge isnt a v and w its two vs intrinde which stands for 66 something to do with the devil
The 3L was a test bed and that went into production so i see no reason it will not as long as it is priced so that it s viable for VW to sell, according to the reports form the Frankfurt motor show it is nearly production ready.
"Well, it seems that VW wasnt done talking about the L1 concept as they have recently let us know that they expect it to enter production right around the same time as the E-Up! (sometime around 2013) and that it will get 170MPG. This goes along with the previous statement that the L1 will travel 100 kilometers using just 1.38 liters of diesel fuel."
as its not right or left hand drive being a single seat widths people will just import them. Its not that hard to order one jump on a train to Germany to pick it up from the factory and drive it back to the uk, You could drive a 3L back to the UK in a little less than a tank so a 1L would be nothing. The demand has to comes from the public in a serous way and i really cant see people in the USA changing their attitude towards everything over night. Its a cultural thing not just VW
We didn't get the Lupo 3L here in the UK when i did a bit of digging i found it was upto VW UK what cars they did or did not sell so it will be the same in the US it is VW USA that will make the choice of what cars they do or do not sell. It is not also just down to VW USA as they may wish to take a car on but it will not meet certain criteria. In this situation it could be safty, In Europe we have euro NCAP ratig but in the US its IIHS.
The average car here is tiny in comparison to you average cars / SUVs many of your SUVs and trucks are bigger and hugely more heavy than many or our commercial vans. A 1L would probably be crushed instantly by an SUV hitting it despite the fact it is designed to be strong and safe. The safety areas will be designed the avarage over here, the audi Q7 is among the biggest cars we have over here, the fiat 500 is a 5 star in the euro NCAP but it is totally destroyed by a Q7 hitting it
and i dont think there is much chance in coming out alive in a head on between a fiat 500 and Q7 size just wins over. Quite simply you would have to be insane to drive some of our small cars on your roads but the L1 forget it you would have to have a death wish to drive it among all the huge SUVs. Can you imagine the lawsuit if someone was killed in one of those things in a low speed crash. You need to transition away from the 'bigger is better' culture culture before anything like the L1
will be sold to the public, you would also need to loose weight, an ultra light car like the L1 is not going to achieve anywhere near what it should if it has a huge amount of weight in the form of a person. the seats will also not accommodate such huge people. Now i know not everyone is huge in the US but it could cause complications that an auto maker just does not want to contend with. I am still not sure if we will get the L1 in the UK but it will be a silly move if it is not taken on
I'm not being sarcastic about a lack of spare tires, just the design that (at least seems for the look of it) prevents one from being able to easily change a rear tire, should one carry a spare of their own.
Then, try to flat a quality tire with an 838lb car...
It seems like the rear wheel can be reached by removing a panel? Else, why make the wheel shape there on the outside anyway?
Distributors of big companies are not new to this attitude. European distributors, for instance, have decided to not offer the Gary Fisher mountainbike brand, AT ALL for 2010. It's a huge hit in the US, gaining popularity with their state of the art 29" wheeled bikes for some time. Europe decides to run behind.
Z do you want me to save you a seat on the boat to Europe? I'm getting the distinctive feeling that we are soon going to have to go there to get the vehicles and other goodies we want. I gave up on North American car manufacturers when they killed the Rav 4 ev and the EV1. Cheers
Here is something to think about. I used to drive a semi for a living that got about 10 mpg. That was considered good by trucking standards. Now for my job I drive a Ford f350 that is 1/8 the weight, 1/10 the rolling resistance, and 1/5 the wind resistance and when you add it all up I manage to get 14MPG. WOW!!!. If I pull a loaded trailer, it is no better than the semi I used to drive pulling 80,000 pounds. Definitly Something to think about.
it's outward appearance is that it does not appear very crash worthy so it would likely have trouble passing US safety standards. But that could be fixed. Yes, there are millions of people who would buy such a car, and I'd be one of them. I'd sure like to buy that kit!.....Can you imagine the wiating line??
US safety restrictions limit what can be sold. So if VW can't get it through the restrictions then they are right in saying they don't have the market for this vehicle in north america ....
Not to start a flame war, but if motorcycles can be viewed as legal, i see no reason how this concept vehicle could not. Yes risk is assumed any time you use any vehicle, as long as the vehicle isn't posing a huge unnecessary risk to other vehicles and their passengers the risk is no higher than a bike.
Side Note: half my buddies and some of my family ride bikes, i have nothing against them. I would even like to own one once im a little more settled.
The VW 1L (not L1) is a tandem two seater, not a single seater. While I think it could meet safety, it would be a hard sell -- harder than a SMART I'd say.
Plus VW has offered 50MPG TDI Diesels since 1996; I fail to see why they should be criticized for showing a $50,000 prototype vehicle made of carbon fiber and a 1-cyl diesel engine when a 50MPG car costs 26k fully loaded and seats 5.
I would not waste $25k on a Nissan EV w/ 100mi range when I can get a TDI for the same $ with 700mi range.
You have to realize that bringing certain vehicles to America is hard... I've lived in Asia and Europe and seen many car's I'd love to have but know will never see US soil. Vehicles by government standards today are required to have things like reinforced doors, airbags & sensors all that good stuff that keeps us safe on impacts. Sadly the L1 probably cannot comply to these standards.. Personally I can see why this a cool car. But an impractical solution for both consumer and company..
Someone else here suggested safety liability concerns in our lawsuit crazy society. Depending on the state you live in, however, kit cars are not regulated the same way. You build it, you assume the risk. We (EBN) are looking at ways to bring this car onto US soil in kit form.
Well perhaps here in Brazil we could stand to much HIGHER and thus more pleasant standards if we weren't supposed to pay U$30.000 in taxes for a car you can afford by less than U$10.000 in US. A Honda Civic costs R$60.000,00 here - aproximatedly 30.000 dollars; A Hummer costs R$250.000 or 120.000 dollars... nonetheless, despite that awlful political matter, that's not my point: what i meant is that we pay for the 'same' car and it comes with shitty/malfunctioning components.

A third info you might have a good laugh about. This was wolkswagen's Brazil answer about the system they used to adjust the rear seat which basically consisted on a metalband which you shuold guilloutine your finger with as you release a meaninful steel spring, different from the US/Europe issued mechanical lever, which was safe: QUOTE "The reason why Wolkswagen Brazil did not sponsored lever systems ts that Brazilian customers are not as demanding as US and European" QUOTE. Also, saying alcohol is clean and a solution as it is, is like congratulating China for growing up 10% up per year without considering all the social costs involved. HA HA HA Bullshit Bullshit Bullshit, i thought your going to say something else tough, Never seen anything like that. The only thing they teach on schools here in Brazil is about alcohol fuel, which is government sponsored solution as a clean renewable fuel, therefore they forget to mention about the folks who harvest the sugar almost subject to almost-slavery labor and all the heavy duty transportation used to distribute it whith messes with roads and environment all around.
VW if they put this car in the US. They would have no way of manufacturing enough of them ,and also would run all us company's out of business ,the demand would be to great for them to ever keep up!
Volkswagon: "Attention North American Auto Consumer. You do not want fuel efficient vehicles. You want a car that gets less than 40 mpg. IS THAT UNDERSTOOD?"
We have lost the attitude of the 70's. I remember seeing the cars lined up around the block just for a chance to lock your doors and block the gas pumps. No one has the balls to take the chance of loosing it all and sayin "No More!!!"
And their marketing objectives would be to F*** the American consumer in the ass, with high fuel prices, half decent cars, and an endless pollution. And not to mention their mass amount of advertising.
Yes the Olds EV1 was a lease only electric car. BP supplied the special funds money for GM and told GM to bring the cars in off lease and crush them or they would pull their project funds. GM complied of course. Two currently exist one is in Lansing, MI in the RE Olds museum. The other by a private owner, probably a BP executive :-)
Most electric cars are lease only because the batteries in such a car are very expensive, and they degrade with use. If a private owner had to pay about 70% over the price of an equivalent (well, better-performing) petrol or diesel car, and then had to pay that 70% again every two years or so... ouch. So electric cars have to be offered under a different business model or they'd never sell at all.
Check out MYT engine, when Raphael Morgado showed this thing at the L.A. car show 2 years ago he thought the auto companies would come running to him. Apparently, they're so arrogant that if their engineers didn't come up with it ... forget it. Look's like he's planning on going into production anyway and offering it to garages for upgrading the used car market. Oh excuse me, the pre owned market .
Can I put in an order no for the REvolt? Something needs to be done, this is all a big show and I don't recall buying any tickets...its time to walk out of the theater.
Try to look on the bright side of life. We can react or we can act to change things. I have reacted for far too long and it has made me miserable for many years. Even finding myself at times wanting to be angry when the anger came. But becoming more enlightened I realize such things are not good for our health. So now I just invent my own wheel if I have to, so the show goes on, and reality doesn't really matter as I create my own version. Smile.
Old cars are mostly more reliable than new ones. The only thing is fuel efficiency. So I would buy an old car that's a diesel and then let it run on bio diesel.

tell me about it !! i have a 2005 leased VW jetta.. and now 4 years later my lease is up and they want me to give them my car back and get a new car from them.. and im like you know what?! fuck you guys! in the past 4 years.. i haven't seen 1 improvement in the design of the cars.. its like the car companies have forgoten what their job is! thety take things from other industries.. like a new audio system and claim that it is an improvement.. or a new navigation system..
The reason why they can't market it in the USA and probably most of Europe because in order to get 230 MPG, you will need to strip most of the safety features off of the car; so it will not pass the safety standards. My wife has worked for most of the main corporations including Chevron, Exxon, Porsche NA, Disney, etc..
They have to cover their ass when selling anything to lawsuit happy US customers. You will not believe the thousands of law suits they are faced with on a monthly basis.
There's some truth to that too. That also needs to change. Spill hot coffee on your lap and it's the restaurants fault? No! It's your own damn fault for being clumsy. I was dismissed from jury duty when asked that very question by the attorney for the defendant.
remove the clutch and gears, replace by electric motor, add couple batteries/supercaps, use the gas engine only as a generator, that kicks in when needed.
that's why companies like Tesla Motors is important. Hopefully in the future things like Big car companies will just fade away. Kind of like those big thing 65 million years ago. Maybe the stock market crash was our meteor.
That shit just burns me up. I'm going to build a car myself. It's going to get 300+ MPG or run from something other than fossil fuel entirely. In honor of the Chevy BS I'm going to call it the REvolt.
I've been a Chevy man my whole life any try to stay away from imports, but the first manufacturer to offer a 200 mpg gets my cash. Any vehicle that can reduce my fuel costs enough to pay for half of my monthly loan payment gets my vote. Does VW honestly think North America doesn't want a 200 mpg vehicle? What the hell are North American auto manufacturers thinking? Start making a 200 mpg vehicle now before VW decides to sell them here an puts an entire industry out of business.
CALM DOWN?!?!? Dude, this is not the time to calm down. This is the time to be seriously pissed off! The time to say "We've had enough of this shit! Comply with our demands or we will SINK your company!"
couldnt put it better. Its about time we started demanding more; its there, somewhere; but we are asking for it, not demanding it like consumers should. If we didnt consume what they fed us, they would try harder to find something we want.
There are many VW's that get well over 30 mpg in usa... I would think if they offered a car that got over 200 mpg in usa all the other dealerships would freak and lose lots of sales... The bottom line is the technoledgy exits it just is not used due to the obvious reasons...
I watch a program about the american goverment and the germans scientists and them saying the badge isnt a v and w its two vs intrinde which stands for 66 something to do with the devil

Take responsibility for your own damn actions, America.

They don't sell single seater cars in Europe either, unless you class a mobility scooter as a car, NOT!
They are just not practical, now a two seater 245mpg vehicle that's a different matter.
If you want a single seater, buy a bike.
It drives me insane when I see mums driving one kid to school in a Chelsea Tractor (SUV to our colonial friends).
Makes me wanna scream 'GET A TANDEM YOU RETARD!'

Best solution now is DIY :
remove the clutch and gears, replace by electric motor, add couple batteries/supercaps, use the gas engine only as a generator, that kicks in when needed.

Sounds to me that some of the big auto manufacturers need to be brought down a peg or two. Maybe that was why they invented bankruptcy.
Go Tesla Motors.
ChrisPCrunchy 2 years ago
that's why companies like Tesla Motors is important. Hopefully in the future things like Big car companies will just fade away. Kind of like those big thing 65 million years ago. Maybe the stock market crash was our meteor.

So buy the car where they sell it and smuggle it in this country in pieces.
Customs wouldn't know what the hell it was if it comes in disassembled.
Think about it if you can smuggle people and drugs into this country, surely the penalty for smuggling a 235mpg car could not be that severe.
Besides, think about the publicity for the car if the case went to trial just a thought.

I like it. A black market for green cars. Let's do it!

No it will not!

Well I hope I'm wrong.

And I seriously doubt the car will ever be in production. It's nothing more than just keeping the status quo.

Start making a 200 mpg vehicle now before VW decides to sell them here an puts an entire industry out of business.

couldnt put it better. Its about time we started demanding more; its there, somewhere; but we are asking for it, not demanding it like consumers should. If we didnt consume what they fed us, they would try harder to find something we want.

VW is full of BS!

There are many VW's that get well over 30 mpg in usa... I would think if they offered a car that got over 200 mpg in usa all the other dealerships would freak and lose lots of sales... The bottom line is the technoledgy exits it just is not used due to the obvious reasons...
