So if you want to make earrings or something do the bottle caps turn out to be fairly heavy once they are done? I don't really like heavy earrings so that's why I am asking. Also how would you make the holes to make them into earrings? And which bottle caps do you use? Don't most have a lot of stuff printed on the top? Is it visible?
Wow, Now I have something productive to do durring my vacation so many ideas are running thorugh my mind now, Thank you very much! this video is very helpful
I was wondering if the artwork has to be covered with tape or clear laminating paper so the colors won't bleed. You pick your designs from magazines but I am wondering if when one just prints pics on regular paper, if the protecting of the artwork is necessary so the colors don't bleed with the glue.
@roxannay I have yet to have anything bleed, although I have had some images from magazines react so that you can see the image from both sides of the page which is sometimes a really cool effect, although I am not sure what causes this and have even tried to take that kind of paper and coat it with a sealer before pouring the acrylic, but that does not help. I have printed things on regular paper and plastic laminate created for computer printers with no problems whatsoever.
Hi, thanks for sharing. I have a hole puncher the same size of a quarter that I got at Joanns you could see the picture through the bottom of the puncher so you could center any picture. I think it might help you get your cuts faster. Again thanks.
@GOTTshua You are amazing!!! I used your method and I started selling these at my High School during free period. One question though, where can you get the plain silver bottle caps, do you get them in a pack?
Question 2 : Does that varnish dry clear on the top?
Just an FYI. They sell circle punches that fit perfectly into the bottle caps so you don't have to trim them around the quarter. That way youre not wasting so much time with trying to do that....
@sheridanrose123 I have found that the one-inch circle punches dull easily and quickly. Scissors alwys give me a nice clean edge. While it is time-consuming, it is full of joy when you are sitting with your girlfriends cutting images. It is like an old-fashioned quilt circle then.
How do you make the holes (drill, what bit, before or after varnish, etc). I've tried drilling before and leaving a nail or paper clip in the hole but then I can't get it out after the varnish dries. what is the best way you have found?
@Willizzzz I like to use a 1/16 drill bit which is specificaly designed for drilling metal. I pour the bottlecaps first, allow to dry completely before making the holes. Sometimes after I have made the holes, I have placed a toothpick in the hole and added more clear-coat. Then I just drill the hole again, dessimating the toothpick. Hope that helps.
@Maximumridegal12 I haven't tried it but it seems that it would work as I have seen folks modge podge anything. The bottlecaps would just not be as high-gloss. Hope it goes well for you!
Something that wouldn't fit in my last comment - if you don't have a hole punch, could you trace around the quarter on a piece of card stock (something thicker than regular paper so it holds up better), cut that part out, then put the card stock on top of the image and use the hole to kind of frame the image so you know when it's centered? Then you could draw a circle around the image and then cut on the line. Does that make sense? It's hard to explain.
I like that you switched from resin to varnish, and that the varnish is working well for you. I've been thinking about doing something like this but it seems that most people use resin, which I don't like for a lot of reasons, but mostly because it's toxic - you have to use it outdoors. And since it was working fine for you and then wasn't, I wonder if it's also unreliable.
Why can't you just pour resin into the bottle caps. I have been searching high and low for a tutorial with resin, I thought this might have been it. Will resin not dry in a bottle cap? That is what all the all the types in stores are made out of.
@kimchery YouTube does have videos showing how to use resin; do a search on "resin jewelry," there are several. In the beginning of this video she explains why she stopped using resin - it wasn't drying properly. (The Enviro-Tex Lite is a resin.) The varnish was working better for her.
@kimada1017 All the videos under resin jewelry use resin blanks or they are poured into resin molds. I haven't found one at the time when I was searching that worked specifically with bottlecaps, and since then I have heard about resin reacting with glue used in bottlecaps. I did watch the video. I've worked with envirotex lite before and it used to be used like a varnish. It is always referred to as a 'high gloss sealant' or 'high gloss finish'.
If you dont they will probaly say somthing like Coke-cola on the bake if you dont mind that then you can just not buy them, but you can buy, but you CAN buy them.
Proudmom4xs, For this batch, I used magazines & some computer laserjet printouts on sturdier paper and also on the clear over head projector sheets. I have never used photo paper but worth experimenting with.

betLogiNzZz..... Yes, it is water resistant. But with all adhesives, water for the most part can be damaging, perhaps immersion would lead to image & acrylic to lose their bonding to the bottlecap and eventually fall out. I would not shower or swim with them. Caught in a rain shower? They'll be alright.

How do I keep the picture from bleeding? I printed pictures on glossy paper and on regular paper and both started to bleed. plz help me!
kikoman07--- I would gather from your experience that there is something that reacts with your printer ink. Perhaps take the images and colour copy them and see if that ink is more steadfast. As I have stated in other comments, this is a hit or miss creation, which is both frustrating and rewarding, in that, when it works, it works great, yet when it fails, it is quite disastrous. Don't give up. Keep trying!
If the ink bled, try spray coating both sides the images from your printer with a clear matte finish. You just need a light coat. This will seal the colors and keep them from bleeding. i do the same with magazine clippings. The paper is a little stiffer and more likely to lay flat instead of wrinking or curling up in the liquid.
If you use the one that I said "do not use" and find that it is still tacky/sticky after a week, simply coat it with the Deka, and it will be saved! Voila.
Well, DIYpunksTV, you CAN use it. It is just that sometimes it has a mind of its own, which can be very frustrating.
When it works, it works sensationally!
When it does not, it is completely annoying.... tacky/sticky and tiny bubbles that do not disappear no matter how much you blow on them or poke them sith toothpicks. ARGH!
Hey LucyTheGooseGoblin! I find it funny that I have not tried that yet.
I would suggest experimenting, but not on photos that are originals (if you are talking about the old-fashioned photos that are chemically proessed negatives).
With art, it is always nice to use good copies of orginals.... as sometimes even accidents in the creation can yield unplanned artsy results.
With modern print-your-own photos, you would have to see how the acylic mediums react with the photo-dyes.
I tried it myself with those pictures you print out yourself at Walgreen's. It turned out beautifully. The wallet sized photos are a good option for the bottle cap art. I think I am going to make some for friends with pictures of their pets and other things they like. Thanks.
Dear killedinthe forest (gosh, I hope not!)-- I have never tried glue, but you never know. Try it and find out. I do not flatten the sides of the bottle caps. They are just regular bottecaps which I merely place art in, fill with goop, let dry and then drill with 1/16 inch bit. Maybe tacky glue would be exceptional. You never know until you try for yourself. Art is a continual experiment. we now have a hypothesis, now get out and do it. =)
Try the tacky glue on a few and find out. You may have to apply the tacky glue in layers if you want the cap filled. Experiment & see how it comes out!
I've been using a 1 inch paper punch for cutting out the designs. Fast, easy, and precise. It's a bit smaller than the inside diameter of the bottlecap, but using the glaze will fill it in. I'm going to try a 1 and 1/8 punch for a better fit. Michaels has 40% coupons pretty regularly so that would help with cost of the punch. (I live for those coupons! :) )
hey thanks for the advice...one thing tho..i bought the varnish you used. It made the ink from most images bleed and took forever to dry. It also caved in abit once dry. ANy tips?
What images did you use? Are they computer printer images? Inkjet?
Most of the images that I use are from print media (magazines/books). The transparencies that I use are printed by inkjet.
Other than that, I do not know what to say except sometimes art takes a lot of experiments before you achieve what you want. The drying time that I get on a 65 degree Fahrenheit day is around 12 hours.
I use a 1/16 inch drill bit, hold the bottlecap firmly against a block of wood and then drill through the image and the bottlecap itself.
For newbies, I'd recommend wearing gloves and HOLD FIRMLY as sometimes the bottlecap will get caught on the drillbit and take yourfingers for a spin, which can be frightening and ouchy if you are not a trained tool-girl.
As always BE SAFE, Ask for HELP if you need it. Seek out a person experienced with using drills. I'd gladly help you but I figure you probably don't live close by.
Nuts? I think I was born that way. ;) Yeah, it can be tedious but if you get a bunch of girls together, all cutting their own images, it is like an old-fashioned quilting bee.
Just make lots of cookies and serve some tea and coffee and it becomes so much fun and a community of souls gathering for art and reltionship.
That is a good question. I have not experimented with that and so I'd suggest that you try the same technique. Paint the back of picture with adhesive, apply to smooth bottlecap surface, then after it has dried, I'd apply more adhesive on top for protection. Hope it woks for you!
Remember that sometimes it takes a number of experiments before something will work they way we imagined! Let me know how it goes! =)
you should get a one inch hole punch works alot faster
then cutting them out

There are some that will PRINT a LABEL on the bottlecaps of any DESIGN you send them. Very cool option but not one in my budget.

Thanks so much for posting this. I have been wanting to make bottle cap art for a while now and you explain it so well.

Hope the tip helps! Have a good one!

hey thanks for the advice...one thing tho..i bought the varnish you used.

Hey..your art is great! i wanna try it..but im curious as to what you used to make a hole in the cap..

I'd gladly help you but I figure you probably don't live close by.

you must go nuts to cut the image in to a circle an to do all that. great job!!!
Rosebernedett 2 years ago
Nuts? I think I was born that way. ;) Yeah, it can be tedious but if you get a bunch of girls together, all cutting their own images, it is like an old-fashioned quilting bee.
Just make lots of cookies and serve some tea and coffee and it becomes so much fun and a community of souls gathering for art and reltionship.

how would i do this if i wanted to put the pics on the other side of the cap? :D
melindat90 2 years ago
That is a good question. I have not experimented with that and so I'd suggest that you try the same technique. Paint the back of picture with adhesive, apply to smooth bottlecap surface, then after it has dried, I'd apply more adhesive on top for protection. Hope it woks for you!
Remember that sometimes it takes a number of experiments before something will work they way we imagined! Let me know how it goes! =)
